JESSE SANTIAGO: Nice clarification of what Carenza is supposed to be. I see a lot of people demonstrating Carenza, but they only jump around with their striking ability as fast as they can so, it's obvious that they are not visualizing an opponent because if they were, they would be demonstrating counter measures. If you have ever watched old school kali warriors demonstrating Carenza, they move slow and methodically, utilizing both defense, offense, footwork, feints, fakes and changing tempo. Learn how to do all these things slow, it's called "Seeking the path". Learn all these things slow and speed with it will follow, that simple!

Not a problem, we've also been told that it's a meditative practice. But when people try to promote during demos, they want to impress the crowd by making it more flashy "Hollywood" style. Based on my observations over the years (especially in the west), the practices of visualization and imagination is almost a dying form because everything must be a literal meaning which engages the 5 senses. Not just in martial arts, but in all areas of work. It's like the new generation are unable to think creatively in a critical situation.

Looking good Jesse. I bet your even better now. Glade you guys have filmed your journey. You guys have really gotten some great interviews. The one thing I've noticed is how humble the best of the best are.

Thanks, always polishing up and making improvements on my end. Since there's not a lot of visual documentations for the Guro's and Grandmaster's from the past, we wanted to get as much documentation with the surviving GM's/Guro's now before they pass on. So much information has been lost over the years, and we feel that we need to do this for future generations.

Nice explanation, most people outside of FMA think we’re just twirling and swing sticks.

We also saw in a video online, that there's also a spiritual aspect to it as well. We have to research more into it.

Yeah, but if like me you live in a small place, be sure to use your shortest sticks!

VTSifuSteve good point. Sometimes I use a wooden spoon or spatula. Improvised weapons 😎

Yes, make sure if you're practicing indoors in your home, that you don't hit any furniture or a family member :). It's good to practice with other smaller objects similar to a stick .

so carenza is basically doing combination of strikes and blocks?
@FMAPulse4 жыл бұрын
Yes, each style or individual does it differently. But the concept is the same. Some also say it's used as a meditative exercise like Tai Chi.

Thank you for subscribing. We haven't been able record much since Mike's work schedule doesn't permit him to create more. Jessie has been mainly running the youtube channel since then. We'll try to keep this in mind going forward. But we are still documenting all the teachers and instructors before us.

Ya but what does karenza literally mean in English? Does it actually mean the word shadow fighting? I doubt that.
@adventleymann81194 жыл бұрын
It actually doesn't have a specific English term for it. We called it shadow fighting/boxing now since it is the "equivalent" term and not "literal". We also called it "Sayaw" that means "Dance" in English. Some of my colleagues often called it "Formless Anyo" because they've said that it is basically a speed up anyo without too much pattern on their own understanding.
