Question for andrew or any guitar player that knows fingertyle or knows how to play by ear. How do u know what to play like the tricks and the chords and all the stuff that makes up how u play the song covers, like did u know theory before or was it bc ur just used to hearing it alot and know what to press. As a similar fingerstyle player to Andrew, I can safely say that getting to Andrew's level of fingerstyle will take a lot of commitment (I'm guessing you haven't played guitar before). What I recommend is that you start by learning songs that have tabs provided by searching on the internet and beginning there. Once you start learning more about "tabs" then you can proceed to learn songs by ear as Andrew does but do begin with simple fingerstyle tabs, Goodluck and don't get discouraged if you find certain things hard. Learning fingerstyle takes time!

if you want to arrange a fingerstyle song, find the chords of the song you want to play, then find the melody. Play the root notes alongside the melody, and add some techniques of your own.

Find the chords. The melody of the song is around the chord you are playing. The notes usually aren't far off from the chord. You can start off with the bass note of the chord, let it ring out, and do the melody.
