In March 2009 eight folk singer/songwriters gathered together for a week long songwriting residential in rural Shropshire to create songs that had a relevance and resonance with Charles Darwin.
The eight artists were Chris Wood, Karine Polwart, Stu Hanna, Rachael McShane, Krista Detor, Emily Smith, Mark Erelli and Jez Lowe.
The whole concert was recorded for a CD release, and the 8 musicians reconvened at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival in August, to once again perform the 19 songs that were written during the week.

Lyrics
There is thunder on the skyline
And it tears her breath away
Like the twilight steals the day
A father's kind hand could not command her
To return to him once more
Like a soldier from the war
We're all leaving
Even the ones who stay behind
We're all leaving in our own time
We're all leaving in our own time
Each night surrenders to a morning
But beneath the April sky
He can hear an endless cry
On smiling fields there's a battle raging
And for every bloom he knows
Another flower never grows
We're all leaving ...
And he has no Ark to bear him from this Flood
Just a broken vessel wrought in flesh and blood
Though the riptides pull him under
He will not cease to wonder
At the beauty, beauty, beauty, beauty
He brings her mother to the church door
And while she prays for what will come
He walks those woods alone
And there he builds his own cathedrals
And on every whirring wing
He can hear the whole world sing
We're all leaving ...

My brother liked this music very much. Now it hurts me because I miss him soo much. Indeed, he left in a wrong time. Touching music.

She is not flat. I think what you're hearing is the slight dissonance in the melody and the harmony, characteristic of many traditional and modern Scottish songs. She is perfectly in key and the song is absolutely beautiful. Definitely my favourite Scottish artist

Every once in a while,if you're very lucky, you happen upon an artist so wonderful that they soar above & beyond mere words. For me, Karine belongs to that rare group. I saw her perform at Ely folk fest last week & if you are fortunate enough to be able to go see her yourself, do.

I had the privilege of meeting Karine at Forres, Findhorn Music Festival. She's genuinely wonderful. Listen to A Pocket of Wind Resistance in one sitting and be prepared to be blown away and sobbing. Magic.

Even though Darwin theory is now being disputed and with sound reasoning, it does still have significant relevance . This song still holds true though, always has and always will.

There are two types of people in this world: beetles and butterflies. The beetles try to drag the butterflies down. Wouldn''t you prefer to be a butterfly?

If you mean at 3:53 to 4:05, she is definitely singing a dissonance, but she is not flat. I heard it as a musical reflection of the clash between the beauty and the sadness of life, which is sort of what the song is about.
