Your speaking and singing voice are controlled by different parts of the brain. That's why people who have a stutter when they speak can sing a whole song and never trip over a word. This is not a character voice, just a beautiful talent.

No it's not, her voice is forced, unnatural and "fake" for lack of a better word. She needs to learn to speak with her real voice. Years ago, as We McDonnald I heard her begin to speak with her "real voice", she stopped--corrected herself and reverted to the cutsey baby doll voice. It works-but only so far, now she must become an adult--act like one and speak like one. She is terrified.

No it isn't. I mean, it IS real--as she PERMORMS it. I HEARD her once, as she began to speak--speaking normally, then she "caught herself" and "switched back" to the cutsy whootsy FAKE voice. It is an act, but no, not calling her a fraud. She IS that voice, when she is ACTING that part. She is hiding--for some reason. I remember We’ from the Voice when she was 17. She definitely is unique and authentic. She went very far on the Voice, but song choice is always key in connecting to the audience and ultimately winning. As far as the science; I get what he is saying regarding the control and if she can get her voice to sound like that singing vs. talking, but let’s not forget the hemispheres of the brain. Left and right brain. If you go into depth study on this you know speaking and singing are on two different sides of the brain. It’s a proven fact. I’m a RN, so I know a little about what I’m saying. I have patients who have had strokes that affected their speech where you can’t understand them ( Aphasia), but ask them to sing and it’s clear as a bell. This is why you know which side of the brain had the infarct from the symptoms produced. Also, folk who stutter, but sing fluidly. We’s speech is some type of impediment ( probably undiagnosed), but clearly evident that when she sings she is using the right side of her brain and the left side is speech. Remember Jim Nabors or Cyndi Laupers speaking and sing voice ( not as extreme as We’), Or how about those that stutter so bad they have trouble with fluid speech but sing without problems ( Mel Tillis, Carly Simon, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Mel Tillis, and Nancy Wilson to name a few. Even Ed Sheeran stuttered as a child but overcame it by rapping to Eminem).

The phenomenon of her speaking vs singing voice is what I call the Gomer Pyle/Jim Neighbors syndrome. As a speech pathologist, I would like to say yes, this is her real voice because it is the one she uses. However, it is not her optimal voice for her pitch range nor resonance. It is her habitual voice. She has what is called a functional voice disorder, which means it is the voice she is using based on habit. At this point, she cannot "choose" to change her speaking voice without therapeutic assistance. But, since she demonstrates better pitch control and resonance in singing, she indicates physical ability as well as stimulability. She would be an excellent candidate for voice therapy.

Your professional vocal analysis can't be disputed but the inference that We is somehow manipulating her speaking voice intentionally is irresponsible on your part. I have been watching We since The Voice and she is genuine. Whether it comes from her being bullied or it's simply her is not for anyone to judge. As an 18 year old and singing at The Lincoln Center in honor of Tony Bennett, We has been consistently outstanding. American Idol is a bit of a popularity contest so who knows how far she will go. Pia Toscano was eliminated very early and she has a magnificent voice. If We gets the right material she will be a star. I wish her all the best in life.
@faithe549 ай бұрын
The coach never said Wei was deliberately manipulating her speaking voice, but intimated when he said though he had never spoken to her, that there is possibly a psychological element to her speaking in a "little girl voice." Years ago on a radio talk show with psychologist, Dr. Joy Brown, the first thing she would do is ask the age of the caller. One evening a woman who was in her early thirties and with a speaking voice like Wei's, called the show, and the first thing Dr. Joy said was I want you to try and lower your voice, you are a grown woman, not a little girl anymore. After a couple of minutes of getting the caller to copy her, the woman indeed had lowered her voice for a good few minutes. Dr. Joy then wanted to discuss what she was possibly hanging onto from her childhood. The coach believes that with her tremendous range and voice control, that Wei could, if she wanted, lower her speaking voice. So the coach may be correct that Wei, for a reason perhaps she is not consciously aware of (perhaps for safety?), is also hanging onto her little girl speaking voice.

So this is what I feel about the difference in her voice. Totally non professional opinion here but i feel like the way she is speaking is probably how she grew up speaking but when she started singing, it could probably be due to imitation of as signer she liked that she realized she could totally change her voice to sound like that. And I feel she continues to speak the way she does because applying her voice differently would sort of feel fake to her. I mean we could all speak with a sort of different voice we put on but it would be sort of like acting or faking.

This is something that i "watched" as to explained her real voice as too her singing voice. It explained that when she speaks it was on one hemisphere of her brain. Now, when she sings or anyone sings for that matter, it changes to the other "hemishphere". So when she speaks or sings, it is about two parts of her brain that separates the two as too speaking and or singing! Meaning... Our brains do not consider the 2 as one! 2 hemispheres that do not see it as the other.

I disagree. We speak in what comes natural to us. Singing requires a different approach. I say this because my natural speaking voice was high like we’s but when I would sing, it came out differently. If I tried to speak with my singing voice, it felt awkward, forced and unnatural. She’s speaking in what comes naturally to her and singing which requires a different focus and effort. You can tell because she’s focused when she’s singing and more relaxed when she’s speaking.

Strange observation “she chooses to speak like that”... some do others don’t; her sound is NY (Brooklyn) and it highlights her personality shy. Many do imitate to be like her, but it’s like a nervous tick not a conscious choice. I guess after writing this, you have a valid point. Most who choose that voice are to be portrayed “innocent/fragile”, she’s holding back and restrained; is it choice for manipulation or survival?

I don't know her background, but I have heard that when some persons, ladies in particular, have experienced childhood traumas, their voices get 'stuck' at the sound of that particular stage in their development. I'm sure its not calculated and that it is probably a subconscious manifestation. To argue that it CAN'T be changed ( if she TRULY wanted to) is silly when she obviously exhibits such conscious control over her singing. But in the end... who CARES what her speaking voice sounds like if she wants to have a recording career. Now if she wants to do more Broadway... she might want to develop her speaking voice in other ways... even if it will always feel like she is portraying a character.
@THE21BROWNIES Жыл бұрын

You can pretty much tell she's going to be top 3. Depends on where AI producers want her to place. They will give her the song choices and stage production to make her get the votes they want her to have. But clearly she's the most talented of the class. I think she can be the best Idol winner since Underwood won it. Depends on the contracts and how AI decides to use her.

NO! NO! NO!, You are very wrong my dear, that speaking voice of hers is the original God-given voice, the one I and you feel comfortable with when we speak, the very one you are using in all your videos, that's your original voice no matter how you sound, I too speak differently than my singing voice, totally different, when I start signing, I push all that I got in all corners, open all pipes in me and tune them to get the smooth angelic sounds, these is why you see us breathing so hard at the end of the performance, "all tools will be on duty hahaha! ", that's a fact KriSma P, God bless, Levy from Gaborone Botswana ( Africa )

I’ve met her in person and that is how she speaks. I think you needed to clarify that she could retrain her speaking voice with lots of practice, therapy and time. But also, anyone can do that, now can’t they. You made it sound like she was faking it. She’s not faking it.

Can it be she sings differently from speaking because it takes more energy to sing? Then just speaking? I know for a fact, singing takes way more energy to sing any tune where it leaves us breathless.
