I used to dog sit for a Border Collie named Fletcher. Smartest dog I've ever met. I swear I'd turn on the evening news and sit with him expecting any minute for him to start a converstation with me on international affairs and the day's current events. Once when I was staying with him for about ten days, I had an accident playing softball and totally blew out my knee the first night I was there. For at least the first 4-5 days, ALL I could do was plant myself on their living room couch adjacent to the kitchen and a bathroom. I couldn't put any weight on the leg, was in a brace, had to keep it elevated and iced pretty much all the time, unable to walk any more than a hobble to the kitchen and bathroom and back door off kitchen that led to fenced in back yard to let the poor dog out. Couldn't play with him walk him or even shower, couldn't stand for more than a minute or two. Until then, he'd always been a tough dog to walk on-leash, very large, strong and pulled terribly, no matter what equipment I used. When the day came that week that I was finally able to walk enough to just even attempt to take him a few houses down the street just to get him (and myself) out and off the property, that dog walked next to me like a lamb. He absolutely UNDERSTOOD after watching me in the house for days that I was in pain, injured and that I couldn't keep up with him if he decided to pull in his usual way. As the rest of the week wore on I was able to hobble a little better every day, and we managed to get a little further on our walks day by day, albeit it slowly and he always walked next to me like a lamb. I didn't see him again for about eleven months, and when the family went away again and I showed up next to dog sit for him, he did something astounding. When I walked in the door he came barreling down the hallway to greet me, thinking it was his family who was walking in the door. Then he did a sliding Scooby-Doo worthy double take on the bare floor and came to a screeching stop right before running into me. And that dog looked at me for a minute, then walked over to the knee that had been injured (I was wearing shorts on both visits), sniffed the knee that had been so badly injured almost a year earlier, licked it and then sat down and looked right up at me as if to say, "Hey! How is your KNEE? Last time I saw you it was all messed up, are you okay now?" He absolutely remembered that the last time he'd seen me I'd had a bad injury on that knee. I was all healed up by then, no more hobbling, but bless his heart, that dog never pulled on the leash ever again when I walked him. Never. Spooky smart.

+Christiaan Baron We humans are too quick to assume animals don't "think like we do." Science is showing that dogs do. It really is pretty amazing. The other day, I joked that it was getting harder for me to eat animals, because the more animal psychology I read about mammals, the more like us they seem. I haven't stopped eating meat (and never will), but I have a new respect for the animal on my plate.

When Karl gets a new toy we immediately tell him to get the toy by name, "get your green bone". When he gets it correctly we say "good green bone" instead of a generic "good boy". This way he learns that each object is different. Same for commands like "down" or "sit" when we first taught him.

I was a builder and took my border with me to work everyday, When I was finishing up the roof on a house I felt something on my shoulder, turned around to find that Zack my Border Collie had decided to see if he could help and came up the ladder to join me. Goofy dog, had to carry him down, not so easy for a dog to go down a ladder. Love those dogs.

We have two border collies. One can talk to these dogs like you would a kid. The capacity for commands and vocabulary is mind boggling! We have taught body parts, the names for sounds, directional words, multi command sentences, the names for rooms, the names for objects in the world- on and on. They are ultra aware and can anticipate your needs and communicate their needs using a variety of expressions and behaviors.

Wow!I 'm impressed. Especially because of locating "blue dog" and "blue duck".The words of these two items have for my (native german) ;) ears nearly the same sound. And so Karl also hesitates a moment for his decision of getting the "blue duck" while looking at first in the direction to "blue dog".And I thought "Strange, he already picked the dog-soft-toy!?".As I saw the little duck in his mouth,a lightbulb over my head went on!Karl showed me,that I have to listen more exactly. Thanks Kalle!! :D

This beautiful dog reminds me of Chaser (who has been in doggie heaven for a little while) and her master went about a year before her (he was a professor and doctor of some sort in South Carolina) he raised her and taught her about hundreds of toys and colors, what a truly amazing beautiful animal. I am on my fourth border collie in my lifetime since 1989 and believe me there is no dog on the planet that is better than them, nor compares to them, or is smarter than them. I am hoping baby Karl is still alive because I noticed this video is at least 12 yrs old. If you have any other video of him or other border collies I would love to view them. ty for sharing I am going to save this one.
