Had a Border Collie many years ago, she was quite simply the smartest animal I had ever seen. She would understand what you wanted to teach her nearly immediately. After I taught her every trick I could think of she would come and sit in front of me with the "Ok what's next?" look.

with bc the main challenge isn't really teaching it different commands, but convincing it to actually be obedient to the command. My bc understands just about everything it cares about unless im dangling a treat or whatever the chances of it following the command is just another story. Bc are just too intelligent to follow anybody blindly. I think they are just result-oriented rather than simply following commands.

I had a border collie that unfortunately passed a little less than 2 years ago. She was the smartest dog I have ever seen. Around 2012 I had just graduated law school and started at a new law firm. My hours at the firm were nearly exact every single day leaving the house around 8AM and coming home around 5 PM. Anyways… I had a doggie door my my house so she could come and go while I was at work. She was a fantastic dog, never destroyed stuff in my house she would just hangout and play with some of her toys which was clear given they were always all over my room everyday when I got home after I had just picked them all up the night before. Fast forward to 2015 I had someone break into my garage and my back shed. They stole some pretty valuable stuff so I made a decision I wish I made earlier and installed cameras inside and outside my house. Later that year someone broke into my shed for the second time, luckily I had those cameras. While searching for the video of the thieves to turn into the police I discovered the most shocking moment of my entire life. Every day I worked my dog would walk outside the doggy door around 10AM and she would mysteriously return around 4-5PM. Curiously I watch the cameras to see if I could see anything but I couldn’t, she would walk behind my shed and vanish for hours. I was so baffled she was hanging out back there it just made no sense. So the next week on Wednesday I decided to call in sick because I couldn’t stand not knowing what she was doing. I got ready and left like I would everyday but the night before I put a ladder to the roof of my house. At 9:30ish I went up on my roof and stayed there for around 25 minutes and I finally saw her on the move. She walked behind my shed and she had found a part of the chain link fence that wasn’t tightened down and she was sneaking into my neighbors yard to play with their dog while I was at work then she would sneak back in just before I got home. This absolutely blew my mind but the craziest part was it being premeditated… 😂 when I walked in that house the day at 10:30AM all her toys were spread out like she had been playing with them all day. I pulled up the video from her room and I saw her at 8:45 after I left for work she would spread out all the toys to make it seem like she had been playing with them all day but then she left all of them and snuck into my neighbors yard.

My dog potty trained herself and I'm pretty sure she understands very basic English. Honestly, I didn't have to train her. She is sleeping on my feet now. ❤️

My Tess knew something was wrong with me and let me know my sugar was too high before I was tested at my dr's office. She also let me know when my sugar was too low and herded me to my kitchen to her a treat. Tess also trained my new r/w pup to do likewise before she died at age 16.2 years.

I am on my fourth border collie, the smartest dog on the planet, sweet as a honeycomb, and extraordinarily gorgeous, I have had 4 males and wish I could get a female. No person in the world could tell me that there is a dog smarter than the border collie, and not say sorry to say most are smarter than people. My last pup was completely potty trained at 3 months old and I agree there is never a dull moments with these beautiful and entertaining doggies. This was a beautiful video and tysvm for sharing it.

Border collies are next level intelligent. I’ve had one for 6 years and the way they communicate with you with their eyes separates them from any other breed I’ve seen. They can learn commands almost instantly and remember them forever. That being said, they absolutely need a big yard to run in circles for a couple hours a day to keep their balance.

I fell in love with mine day one. Random friend of a friend at dinner brought her dogs. One was my baby! He was dumped on her by someone that didn’t come get him after a few months abroad. I’ve thought about getting a dog for a long while but thought I needed a specific one due to allergies. My asthma did come back but taking inhaler daily with Claritin and I’m good to go. He was falling asleep on me first few nights. And is sitting on my lap now. Most loving and well behaved dog I could have asked for. Only thing I regret is not getting one sooner. But if I did he wouldn’t be here. So, you know, be thankful for what you have! But don’t wait 20 years!

I had a Saint Bernard who was that smart. She would call me "Mom Mom." She figured out how to roll the trash can down the back stairs in order to get to the goodies inside. She figured out how to unlock her chest of dog treats. Afterward, she pulled the whole thing over to her mat so that she could enjoy her snacks while the rest of us were sleeping. We also had a smart mastiff that figured out how to put her toys in a pail in the backyard in order to bring them all in at once. I love the Border Collie, but it has too much energy for me with my health issues.

My little Max is a brown and white BC and he is beyond clever. He knows so many words and even sort of picks up on things with just a look. He invented his own game, without ever being told about it. I will say the name of one of his toys (Oinky Pig, Banananana, Squeaky Duck, Doughnut and so on) and he will run and find it, bring it to show me he has found it, then rub to the top of the stairs and roll the toy towards the bottom, bark once to alert me then wait for me to throw it towards him. It's the strangest things, as I have never taught him to play on the stairs at all lol

I think they are an African/middle eastern dog in ancestry in a round about way, a breed meant to survive in a harsh environment is going to be smart. First line they navigated with humans across the ice sheet that connected the Morocco/Spanish Pyrenees and Wales (20,000 years ago). Probably a smaller in stature. Second line was brought in later by the Romans to Britain, possibly a Judea or Carthaginian herding dog lean wiry breed with all terrain abilities.

that an easy one all your border collie has to do is go over there and lead them back, and can learn that task in an instant, border collies will herd anything that is moving including a car or a truck.

The Border Collie is of Irish origin, the word Collie in Gaelic (Irish) means "Useful". Its recorded in the 6th century Irish monks where breeding Collies.

That is so interesting, and there are a few examples of the word in other early northern European languages from around 200 BC too. Scandinavians used a similar word "Colle" as a proper name for their dogs and in Scottish Gaelic a "Cooly" was the name of a specific type of sheep, and older Scots will still use the term Collie dog to refer to a sheep dog.

No they aren’t. They were bred in the border regions of England and Scotland hence “Border Collies”. Back in the day they didn’t really have “breeds”, all dogs were mongrels. The collies you’re talking would’ve been just working dogs bred for a specific purpose but there wouldn’t have been anything uniform about the dogs themselves as a separate breed. They were just mongrel dogs good at the job they were used for. There’s lots of extinct kinds of dogs too that have the same name as modern dogs. The modern English bulldog for example is completely different to the extinct breed. Back in the times youre talking about they were all mongrels and all had generalised names like “collie” or “cur” etc.

@@BBeowulf The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient breed native to Ireland, so old it's written in Irish mythology but the Collies being a specific breed used by Irish monks is recorded in the 6th century AD. Few centuries latter when the viking raids started in Ireland them same record keeping monks then fled to the Western Isles of Scotland along with their Collies. The word "Collie" itself is intriguing, in Irish and Scots Gaelic it's (Useful) and in German "Kuli" pronounced Collie is (Worker), they also have a sheep dog breed called 'Alt Deutscher Kuli'.

@@poneill81 I’d be interested in reading up about it if you have any sources for your claims. I’m fascinated with our relationship with dogs through history and all of the extinct breeds we have lost but I’m not sure you’ll be correct on that… The dogs of today are far different to the dogs of antiquity in many ways, even the breeds that still exist. Our islands have been known for dog breeding since even the Roman times though where it’s said our war dogs were preferred by Roman Emperors over the legendary extinct molasses breed that Alexander the Great used, which they believed was overrated in comparison. Even just in the last hundred years we have lost a lot of English and Irish working dogs that have gone extinct.

@Leonardo Gellato Border collies have a double coat of hair. They need resting time during heat and hot weather.

Usually they have double coated fur , even the short hair types so I wouldn't recommend for hot weather. My pure bread male collie had puppies with my Springer Labrador mix female that had a very light fur and the puppies got the dad's fur. Not even one out of 9 got the mother light fur. So even a mix breed collie I don't think would be suitable for hot weather. I suggest you to try smartest indian breeds, and select top dogs for breeding :P

@@exhpv That's true, but Harsh Aussie style and Harsh Northern England/Scotland style are poles apart. The Aussie bred for what he does, and the BC bred to do what he does...agree though, love 'em both

They are Thieves though.. and aware of it themselves.. i could teach our mixed collie a compleet new trick like bringing the paper..in a few minutes.. just show him the paper.. say "pick it up.. then say, "go get the paper".. that's it..Ours was shorthaired black with a white collar and a white tail tip.. white striped forhead..to fat, long nosed. it seemed he intuitively understood all sorts of commands..always gave his best.. he sort of outran himself getting started running as if his frontend wasn't fast enough for his hindquarters .. we got him as a puppy very sick..he became demented at 18, He once ate all the chocolat coockies out of a big chrismas tree ,no problem. raw potatoes.. no problem...He loved to go on long walks with his farmersterrier-fox-buddy side by side..those days our dogs just walked out of the backdoor onto the countryroad inbetween grass meadows.. he would also listen if not talked to.. some commands or conversation prior to a walk or treat or attention would only need one consonant or one vowel and his ears went up instantly, upon confirmation he went nuts.. running cirkels at high speed in a room packed with antiques and furniture and stuff.. he always sat with my mother in a chair to small for the both of them.. one day my mother sneezed or blew her nose and he disaproved of it.. . for some reason air was never meant to be blown from a halfclosed nose in his proximity .. we were not allowed to do so and any gesture or intent of reaching for the nose while looking at him was met with a vocal disaproval.. it was hard not to feel uplifted with his gentle and happy presence around..
