Karlie Kloss on Dancing Ballet, Her Prom Date, and Being a Chameleon | Screen Tests | W Magazine

In this Screen Tests interview, cover model Karlie Kloss talks about her first ever photoshoot - with photographer Arthur Elgort (father of Ansel Elgort), being a whole foot taller than her prom date, dancing ballet for Carine Roitfeld and why sometimes she really doesn't understand fashion.
Marc Jacobs has named a bag for Kloss.
“Let’s be honest,” says Kloss. “I think it’s the fact that I’m eight inches above the average person walking down the street. I’m somewhat in my own cloud.” At 19, she already knows how to be disarmingly self-deprecating, but yes, let’s be honest, it’s not just her meteorological height that attracts attention. Kloss also happens to have the face of a fairy, with a small constellation of freckles on her right cheek, and the kinetic effervescence of a sprite.
When Kloss was growing up in St. Louis, the discipline of ballet training provided a positive charge for her lightning-bolt limbs. “You learn to control every ­aspect of your muscles, your face, your toes, your fingernails,” she says. “And that is how you tell a story, through movement.” Her first shoot in New York, at 14, was with Arthur Elgort, who photographed her doing a split on a ballet bar.
She might look like a living line drawing-one encased in custom-made 3x1 pants, the first jeans she’s ever had that actually touch the ground-but it took Kloss a long time to “own it,” she says. “My sisters have always been these gorgeous glamazons, and I’m, like, this tall skinny stick in the family. And I still am the tall girl, even on the runways. Every time I see Karl Lagerfeld, he’s always, like”-she puts on a German accent-“ ‘Karlie, have you stopped growing yet? Are you taller?’ ” She laughs loudly. “It used to be something that I really disliked about myself, being tall and lanky, but it turned out to be the greatest asset I have-how uniquely weird I am.”

When she first became a model as a teenager, I didn't think she was that pretty. I thought she was perhaps a little too bony and lanky. But now that she grew into her looks and put on a little bit of weight to be a VS model, I think she is GORGEOUS! I'm serious, she is getting more gorgeous by the day.

I don't think there's anything wrong with her presentation in this video! Yes, some of what she said sounded a tad rehearsed, but come on! 1. modeling is not only about being beautiful, you have to have a differential from others, so being pretty is not enough. 2. why do you think there are so many models? because beauty doesn't mean the same thing to all people. so, she may not look pretty to you, but you don't get to choose who you want to be successful in the business 3. she is the model of the moment right now, so she'll get interviews and covers more than others. I think that's she's been able to radiate more confidence, compared to her old interview vid when the focus was just her she seemed quiet. At least now she's trying to be lively and entertaining. I think she's just grown up, and perhaps it was forced, but it wasn't like I had to cringe when i watched it. Who are we to know what she is like as a real person?
