Glad you went to my hometown Shanghai! FYI "dim sum" is Cantonese cuisine rather than Shanghainese. The sesame paste you mentioned is what we called "Tang yuan". It's a dish to celebrate family reunion. You actually can find it as frozen food in NYC Chinese supermarket.
