Another beautiful, old Irish/ British ballad that dates back to 1689. It uses botanical symbolism to warn young people of the dangers in taking false lovers.

Let No Man Steal Your Thyme
Sung by Carey Mulligan
Composed by Craig Armstrong
(C) 2015 Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation
Original: • Carey Mulligan - Let N...
- | LYRICS |-
Come all you fair and tender girls
That flourish in your prime
Beware, beware
Keep your garden fair
Let no man steal your thyme
Let no man steal your thyme.
For when your thyme it is past and gone
He'll care no more for you
And every place where your thyme was waste
Will all spread o'er with rue
Will all spread o'er with rue.
The gardener's son was standing by
Three flowers he gave to me
The pink, the blue, and the violet too
And the red, red rosy tree
And the red, red rosy tree.
But I refused the red rose bush
And gained the willow tree
That all the world may plainly see
How my love slighted me
How my love slighted me.

In ancient times, thyme was used to symbolize courage, bravery, and strength and by the medieval times, it was a common symbol of chivalry, so the title basically says 'let no man steal your courage'

is better to say "let no man steal your honor" in other words the virginity.

You are really the best at old folk tale songs. You are a true songstress of the modern day. I can for sure, see you in an old tavern singing old songs from tales. Just like the Skyrim ones, in that theme. I wouldn't be surprised if I was the Dragonborn and saw you sharing songs in an Inn.

Thanks for this, Karliene. Been following since 2017 and you've helped me through iatrogenic injury and subsequent chronic pain, dissertation, romantic loss, parent death. And now I have a house and garden of my own. The man who stayed me through all that difficult stuff now doesn't seem to love me any more. I think he only loves me if I'm suffering and he can rescue me. I'm not suffering now; I'm happy in the garden and with the life I've built for myself, finally. So he keeps leaving me, and coming back, every few months. I think he does it to make me sad. It turns my brain to porridge, the life turning upside down every few months. He steals a lot of my time/thyme. When he goes it's hard to get up and water the plants. I listen to this so I remember to care for them. Anyway thanks love. Keep singing. Oh, also, growing rue is so much harder than people think, haha. It doesn't just "spread all over", hahahaha. If only. Pollinators love it.

You are disrespecting yourself by letting this man return to your life. Seems to me you'd be happier if you told him to stay out of your life. Without him your life would be your own and you could do as you want without wondering if he's going, coming, staying, or leaving. He likes the control he has of you. If you let a man's decision decide if you are happy, sad, unable to function then he truly has control over you and your life.

youshimimi Yes, it is really saying that a girl should hold onto her virginity but you have to remember, this is a song from the 17th century when life was very, very different for women. If a girl lost her innocence, she would have become a social outcast. I certainly don't agree with the songs meaning but it's a beautiful piece and I love the melody. I wouldn't want to change the lyrics because they're a little piece of history and they're fascinating. It would be like painting modern clothes over an old portrait. History can't be changed and it shouldn't be brushed under the carpet, we should always remember our past and how far we've come. :-)
