They were tussling over semantics instead of Loon asking directly, what are you trying to say Los… How are these deals usually structured, and how was your deal structured, why was it important for yall to retain some ownership of the IP like you said you did. What are ways you all are looking at data! What do you think are the most important aspects of working with a giant like Netflix. How does data play a role. After the initial back forth, he could have asked these important questions and we could have really known the deeper points Karlous was trying to make. Netflix has a very small amount of advertising dollars compared to their lines of business. Although it is a consideration, it might not be the most important consideration when looking at doing business with them, where it might be the biggest consideration when dealing with KZbin or Google whose ad business is some of their biggest revenue generators. Karlous could have probably broke that down to us, but instead they were talking arguing about one point at a time!!!

So I understand what both are saying. Netflix really wants accounts and viewership is secondary to acquisition of an account. But also since they control the data they can say what they want about numbers. As someone's who's worked in entertainment and analytics separately I can guarantee you whatever numbers they're purporting aren't legit. Neilsen literally just started reporting Netflix numbers last so they were eligible for certain awards etc. Before that they were actually publicly exposed for buying up their own accounts to inflate the valuation of the company and I've long suspected they did the same right after they increased the price and limited account sharing. Nobody is there to check them they can do what they want because it's uncharted digital territory.
