Did you expect this in New Zealand? When you come to New Zealand, you'll be shocked to see gangs. Gangs in New Zealand are so unafraid of the Police that they ride obnoxiously loud motorcycles so you can hear them a mile away.
They even wear a uniform which includes a gang patch, so you know which gang they're from.
This is how open and obvious organised crime is in New Zealand. And for visitors like my wife, it's shocking.
If you stay away from them, they won't bug ya. But the reality is gangs are known for the drug trade, murder, theft, violence against women, and the list goes on.
"There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs and ethnically based gangs. A chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club was formed in Auckland in 1961, the first Hells Angels chapter outside the US.
Soon after, the Mongrel Mob formed in Hastings and Wellington, developing into a predominantly Māori and Pacific Islander gang and having the largest membership in the country.
Through the 1960s and 1970s, other outlaw motorcycle clubs and ethnically based gangs formed, including another predominantly Māori gang, Black Power (not related to the African-American movement), which grew to rival the Mongrel Mob." from Wikipedia.

That’s generally how most gangs are. Stay out of their businesses, and don’t disrespect them, you’ve usually got nothing to worry about. That said, there’s gangs around my province in Manitoba that do jump random people and rob them for fun. But nobody will ever respect a gang that does that, and everybody knows a real gang would stomp them out of existence without much effort.

It's funny, I remember a thing years back where there was a natural disaster in Japan I believe, and the Yakuza were the first to rush out and offer aid to the people with food, clothing, water, and other necessities, long before the Japanese government actually came out to help. Sure they extort people but at least they have some kind of moral code, it's honestly better than insurance here in America lol Insurance here will take thousands upon thousands of dollars from you every month and only cover part of damages and only after you spend a certain amount of money, they don't care in the slightest. Kinda sad when the Yakuza is more caring than US insurance companies. Both extort your money, but only one actually seems to care.

As someone who has grown up and still lives in NZ, most gangs over here are actually pretty chill, at least in public, they can be annoying at times, if ya don't like loud noise, but a lot of them are actually quite friendly people. We've even got some that make lunches for schools and keep drugs out of certain communities. Most of them are related also, as the locals have very big families, so sometimes it's just a ton of uncles and cousins and such. Not as bad as gangs around most of the world, and are pretty friendly, but there are the exceptions to that rule, but most gangs won't bother anyone except rival gangs.

They're also citizens that have families here, so they tend to take care of the communities they are from. They won't bother people unless you fk with them, owe them money, or owe them blood debt. They're generally loud and noisy, sometimes violent towards their own, but they leave a lot of people alone. It's the new gangs with no roots here that are the problem because they have no issue with shooting up whatever area because they have no ties anywhere.

Agreed. And they have this in a lot of places, east coast, LA, Texas…not unique to NZ and nothing to be afraid of. While it is loud and they are sometimes in the way I like seeing that so many people are enjoying time and traveling together and they are usually focused on safely getting all their members from one location to another.

I was a typical 18 year old German backpacker in the Northland when we ran out of gas and the only gas station (self-Service) for miles wouldn’t accept any of our cards. The only person there was a member of a motorbike gang. He was happy to help us out. We gave him cash, he put in his card so we can fuel. We gave him some beers and he was happy, super friendly guy despite the scary appearance with all the face tattoos

Motorcycle gangs have definitely been involved in organised crime. They were certainly very dangerous in USA for a long time. Maybe not so much these days, and certainly not compared to the Cartel, but still enough to be taken seriously by the FBI. I know that motocycle clubs in Australia have been banned because of how much of a problem they were causing (or at least the '1%').
