Professional alcoholic here, 11 yrs sober. I've been to the hospital for "dehydration" multiple times, and it was exclusively when I had become physically dependent on alcohol and was trying NOT to drink. Based on my experience, my hypothesis is that John is trying to moderate his drinking so he can function enough to travel and "perform," and as a result the beginning stages of withdrawals are sending him to the hospital where he gets an IV bag or 2, some Diazepam or Librium or something like it, and they send him on his way after advising him about his drinking habits. Once he leaves the hospital and feels some sense of physical relief he will go right back to drinking, justifying it by pointing to how shitty things turn when he doesn't drink just long enough to board an airplane. This man is going to die soon if he doesn't change. Alcohol induced death is the only way this ends, whether it's cirrhosis or its him falling down and hitting his head on the curb. Either way, alcohol is going to kill him if he doesn't change.

I was a closet drunk who snuck almost all my drinks, I've definitely been in a hurry to drink either out of desperation or trying to be stealth, and bashed the lip of a bottle in to my front teeth like Corey Feldman on a hot mic.

My uncle is a drunk and can't go a full day without getting the shakes. John is just a typical long island drunk who drinks to keep drinking, in other places they call it blackout alcoholics but here all you see is alcoholics and just keep on going full blast and some are actually functional(like my uncle). John reminds me a lot of my uncle who is a certified drunk to the 8th degree who is up everyday at the crack of dawn, working doing back breaking work, smoking 100s, drinking beer and liquor like water at almost 70 years old, driving drunk pretty much everyday, never gets popped or has an accident and just flies under the radar like a black cat with a cloak on LMAO he's the most interesting man in the world next to the dabbler🤣🤣🤣🤣
