**Karma** Solo Skiff Owner FLIPPED His Boat

I challenged my buddy who has a fully loaded Solo Skiff to a fishing challenge. Who can catch the most fish on each platform. It was going good until a major storm hit us. I hunkered down but, my buddy on the Solo Skiff got into some dangerous swells and high winds and flipped his Solo Skiff and lost just about everything.

I purchased my first kayak this year, and found your videos trying to learn about trout/redfish fishing on the Texas coast. I do wish I found your videos before I bought my kayak, but you live and learn. As a North Texan, I find your videos very informative and entertaining. Keep up the great work, and stay safe out there!

Glad all turned out well. From a random dude on the internet who has 30 yrs + experience...very simple plan here...when weather threatens instability, you can still fish, but fish within 5 minutes of your launch no matter the vessel. So for a kayak that may be a couple hundred yards and for a boat, depends on it's speed capabilities. It may be a bummer to alter your fishing strategies, but it just makes everything so much easier and you may actually improve your fishing skills. Taking some folks out this evening...lots of scattered storms today so we will be within a 1.5 miles of launch. Typically if you plan well for shelter on a stormy day you can take cover, wait it out and get back to fishing. With all of that being said, yes stay close to land, preferably a "soft" grassy shoreline and everything will be fine. Always stay calm and avoid trying to outrun oncoming storms that are ahead near the launch site...too difficult to predict. If a storm is behind you and the ramp/launch is ahead and you're confident in your knowledge of the boat and storm speed, then you can typically outrun it and all is well.

Glad you and Marcus made it out safely. Last time I got caught by a storm in the kayak, my friend took off into the storm instead of waiting with me as I suggested. I had to go follow him since he was new and couldn’t see anything in the lightning and rain. Found him after he flipped and called his wife. He lost his phone after saying we were in danger. My wife calls me from Mexico freaked out. Storm blows over , he goes home and I went to another spot and caught a 26 in speck. He then sold his kayak. Crazy Fishingman Reggie Fresh

Glad things turned out ok. But 1. Marcus shouldn't have left you "his partner " for any reason! 2. Doing what Marcus did is the reason we may end up reading or hearing about a lot person one day when things dont go right. Hope that is never the case for him but really bad call on his part. and i hope this thought him a lesson in life 3. You gotta slow down and think things out when conditions change on a dime. RX you did the right thing in pulling off to the side and waiting it out. No shame in it. it happens to us all and it will happen again just gotta be smart and wait it out.

Are there any apps that connects with the coast guard to determine whether it’s safe to fish based on swells, wind, and weather? In Korea, CG is pretty good about informing the fishing community when and when not to go out by pushing notices to those that subscribe.

I wonder if "Expandacraft" outriggers would have helped prevent flipping the solo skiff. I have been looking at the solo skiff but I am on the bigger side of its persons capacity which is 250 lbs. I understand that the outriggers add a ton of capacity and stability. Just thinking out loud because I have been seriously considering the solo skiff.

Last trip out we got caught in a freak squall that came out of nowhere when making the final crossing of Chokoloskee Bay after exiting the 10,000 islands. The winds came out of nowhere so fast that it nearly flipped me in my Predator PDL. Fortunately I was able to quickly lean into the wind and keep my balance. 8 years kayak fishing and that is the closest I have come to flipping.

Most decent VHF radios have weather alert. Fishing from a boat without a VHF radio that has weather and can float. Is an accident waiting to happen The coast guard has no patience with that. You have to respect the water . A DSC VHF radio is even better to have . The DSC button allows other boaters to know where you are.
