Karnataka, similar in area and population to Gujarat has its glorious history of industrialisation. Mysore "rajya" (princely state, in size next only to Hyderabad and (Jammu&) Kashmir), was the most industrailsed state, far ahead of all other princely states as well as many British administered presidencies & states. Mysore Rajya was the core (being a third in area & half in population - of Karnataka). Karnataka state must bear this in mind before chalking out a strategy, for the state's industrialisation. The most famous engineer-industrialist-administrator, Bharata Ratna, Sir Mokshagundam Visveraya, was from Karnataka. As the Diwan, he was responsible for industrialisation of his state (rajya) as a totally self-dependent. He opened the Bhadravati steel plant (second only in the country, after Tata steel plant at Jamshedpur) with charcoal as fuel from abundant forests nearby, instead of imported coal (either from other far-off Indian states or from abroad). He was the first to tap Hydro-electric potential at Sivasamudram waterfalls & electrify the whole state (apart from Mysore & Bengaluru cities). Following him, Sir Mirza Ismail did equally well. Mysoreans enjoyed higher prosperity as well as sophistication because of it. Also Karnataka is much endowed with mineral wealth (the only state to produce Gold). The country & the states need, "industrialists" (& hence industries) but not "businessmen", being glorified "traders" mostly ("idhar ka maal udhar, udhar ka maal idhar"). Gujarat, that Karnataka wants to emulate may be a step ahead in per capita GDP, but not in big industries, till yesterday. That picture changed because their own man is PM of the country & does everything possible to develop his native state - starting from the Bullet train. Tomorrow, if in case, the next PM is from the cow-belt/Gangetic plains or somewhere in Central India, the state (Gujarat) faces an avoidable slump. This, the aspiring Karnataka should avoid. Industralisation free of politics is the need. Prosperity of Gujarat (Tatas are Mumbai-based but Gujaratis). Its because the people, being frugal have inherent capability to raise cash transact money fast. They need cash. They pray upon industries rather than "creating" new ones. Once when asked "are you businessman ?" Mr. Tata replied "I am an industrialist". He conducted his affairs in a level-playing field & that is a quality to emulate. Another quality is Gujaratis are of outgoing (going abroad for business) narature, that left a huge population of Gujratis abroad (in US they rank second, behind Hindi speakers), thus siphoning foreign funds for investment, that Kannadigas don't have. Karnataka (a multi-lingual state unlike other southern states) must tap from her resources. Tatas never shirk from an opportunity to invest here. They established country's premier Science institute, IISc, at Bengaluru!. Northern Karnataka (from Ballary on) is backward. There were no railway lines between Gadag-Hotgi & Guntakal-Wadi sections. It is a reason for backwardness. Now three lines progress: 1. Ginigera to Raichur 2. Gadag to Wadi 3. Tumakuru to Kalyanadurgam (connecting to Ballary). The first (Ginigera - Raichur) ran smooth in execution till Karatage, stopping short of Sindhanoor. Beyond Sindhanoor there is "nil" activity (as seen from up-to-date satellite maps, that can't lie like politicians or their journalists) and land-acquisition wasn't done by the state (if done, we can see embankments for track-laying, ready). Same is the story with the second line - it stopped half way and no work was done on Wadi side. On the third (Tumakuru - Kalyana`durgam) that is shared with AP, land-acquisition & subsequent embankments (as well as rail bridges & culverts) were done in AP & yet to start in Karnataka & embankments stop at the border. For instance at Kuchangi Jn. (a proposed line to Davanagere deviates too, but wallows in the same state) and thence till Masanipalya. Land needs to be acquired from Chandrabhavi (on Karnataka side of the border) to Masanipalya (covering Koratagere & Madhugiri), while it was done from Kottalam to Doddahalli (a "train ran" till here), via Pavagada in Karnataka territory - but waits track-laying for the other, Tumakuru side to be completed. Karanataka should press for the pending railway line to NE, stressing on shorter (Chintamani-Madanapalli-Rayachoti-Guvvalacheruvu "pass"-Kadapa) route. It will directly connect Kolkata/Haora, Cuttack, Visakhapatnam & Vijayawada when complete- for faster goods movement. Karnataka government should pay attention to "infrastucture" with a little attention paid, to big cities & towns. State should "tap" the huge manpower potential (experts in all sophisticated subjects availoable) that is the envy of every other state. In Financial management too it isn't necessary, even to seek other experts from outside.. Update!.

@AbhishekKumar-ys6ts Right now they are the most industrial states in the country - not created by political interference (you need appropriate Central assistance though & indulgence and at appropriate moments). They contribute more GDP per state, than all other states. Propsperity of the whole country depends on per capita GDP. Mantra is work hard. You can't beat them for that for the next half a century - at least (chutad tak zor lagane se bhi).
