I think another reason Kate constantly wore brighter and darker colors was because she thought she was always meant to return to India, so they incorporated traditional Indian colors and patterns into her wardrobe. As compared to Edwina, she always happily recalled India, her childhood, and her mother there to other people and Edwina seemed to know that her future was bound to England so that could be why her color palette was more traditionally regency.

Completely! I did not think of the colours representing India, but I totally saw that now. I thought that the contrast between the shapes and colours of the two sisters represented their outlooks - Kate is the 'older' sister/mother of Edwina, hence she is wearing darker, more stronger colours - a similarity to Lady Danbury's colour palette with its jewel tones and rectangular cuts. Edwina is largely innocent, the younger sister following her sister's advice - hence her pastel pink and more flowy shoulders for example?

Also Kate is Edwina's half sister, and their dad is indian. Likely Kate's bio mom as well, while Edwina's bio mom (and Kate' step/adopted mom) is english, meaning Edwina is half english while Kate is not.

I think Kate and Edwina's outfits were a bit saree inspired. In several scenes Kate was wearing a woven banarasi brocade as an accent fabric. Both she and Edwina wore very typical Indian jewelry (not the best kind, but definitely Indian styles).

I think the differences between Kate's and Edwina's costumes was to show how different they are. Kate was in darker and more saturated colors to probably show how mature she is and when she is out, her hair is less intricate than Edwina's. She also wears fabrics that are a little stiffer than Edwina's. Oh and she also REPEATS outfits. Which I think is a nice touch because she wasnt there to catch a man, she was only there for Edwina so who cares what Kate is wearing. Edwina's costumes were soft and flowy and more innocent, but her hair was also so intricate, probably to try to look older but it just makes her look younger all together.

I just feel like what she said about looking like they didn't fit her was on point. It feels like it's nit exactly her size or something and the fabric plus the color palet they chose looked weird on her even though it shouldn't, they could've easily made it look good its not a hard color palet especially with her skin tone. They looked a bit more like costumes than clothes that didn't fit her great and i dont get why. I think they were meant to have "indian fashion" elements and i like that especially considering her character, i just think its another reason why i dont get how they made it look bad. Further on in the article about the corset it said this, "Ashley's costume was a team effort and she said she needed a lot of help from the wardrobe department “because when you're in a corset, you can't put your shoes on.”" What on earth are these costume designers doing?! Poor, working women would wear corsets every day and had no problem. Except for some specific examples, none of which were worn during regency era, corsets should not limit movement and should actually make you feel better because it's giving you back support.

Most actors seem to have zero education when it comes to even fantasy historical dress. Wearing, and being comfortable in, a corset has a definite learning curve to it for the person and the corset. Remembering to put your shoes and stockings on FIRST is a Thing To Remember when dressing with corset in the loop. Of course those poor actors needed help. It is annoying, though.

There's a common phrase "boots before corsets" because corsets can limit your forward bend so it can be tricky to put shoes on after having the corset on. I've struggled to put shoes on after because my torso is short and my legs are long so there's just a lot of distance to reach which I usually rely on being able to fully bend myself forwards to put on shoes. But if I do it the other way round, that's it no mobility issues and I can do stuff like run to catch a train whilst dragging a suitcase whilst wearing a corset. So its definitely not that limiting. In the case of these stays though, they're basically just longline bras. They shouldn't be preventing any forward bending because they finish well above the waist which is the bit you'd bend at. I could imagine that the shoulder straps which hold the shoulders in a backwards position could take some getting used to, but again, nothing that carefully planning couldn't solve because you just don't lace up the straps until you've done with the bits which require greater forward shoulder mobility (like the putting on of shoes). It really does feel like they were just parroting things that aren't really true or are only partially true. Like maybe the actress who said about not being able to put your shoes on read that somewhere and just presumed you can't do it at all rather than thinking of changing up the order. Its so normal today that shoes are the last thing you put on that people forget there are other orders of doing things which might work better in certain contexts. Like if I'm going to be wearing quite a high heeled shoe then I will definitely need to put those on before lacing up my corset because it changes my posture enough that doing so after can be uncomfortable (because the corset is holding me in a different position than the heels want me in). But if I'm wearing flatter shoes then if I forgot, I'd just need some help getting them on, but wouldn't really need to reverse the order for comfort reasons. This is all in steel boned modern corsets though. Not half stays stiffened with string. lol

As a corsetiere, things like Bridgerton just piss me off. I get customers who are recommended to the corset business I work at for medical reasons by their doctors, who are told that they should get a corset for relief from their pain (scoliosis and fractures are often the cause), and STILL expect something out of Bridgerton or Pirates of the Caribbean, with the constricted breathing, and the blood and bruises. They come to their appointments so nervous, expecting me to hurt them, and I hate it. I wish that trope would go away. It is actually chasing people away from corsetry, including people who could actually really benefit from it.

Yeah, the correct information needs to be spread. Sadly, a good chunk of people seem misinformed on it. I think the customers are more at fault than the tropes really. I also see the tropes everywhere and I believe that at the time it could be uncomfortable but I would never think about today's corset for scoliosis being like that I mean we live in the 21st century people, if it's a medical device then of course it helps. I went to a corset construction course held by Jill Salen (who has written a book which has patterns taken from antique corsets) and even she thought that anything more than a 2" reduction was massively extreme and impossible to achieve without damaging yourself. I wanted to make my corset I was doing have a 6" reduction as that was what I had with my custom corsets and they'd fit totally closed, but I was wearing them with a 2" gap. I turned up in one of them on the first day and she basically accused me of having a fetish as if it was disgusting. But my waist is just quite squishy, so I can lace down quite easily. She didn't totally believe me on the size of the corset I was wearing, so eventually we settled on me making it have a 20" waist for a 4" reduction and patterned so it would fit fully shut. Got to the try on stage and she thought she'd teach me a lesson by lacing it fully shut (thinking it would meet with resistance) and it closed so easily that in the end she did apologise and admitted that I was probably right about what reduction I could handle. But she still muttered about making sure noone else went smaller than 2" reduction. It made me so angry that she could be spreading such misinformation when she was meant to be one of the experts on historical corsetry. Let alone a teacher. And she had some other questionable choices such as making all the seam allowances a minimum of an inch wide each (she tried to persuade me to do a 2" seam allowance but I didn't want to waste fabric like that). Her insistence on it was because she made corsets as costumes for performances where the same corset would later be altered to fit different people. But it was only ever going to be worn by me because the proportions were just very unlikely to work for anyone else that I knew. And I don't share my corsets. I was so excited to have lessons with someone who was sort of famous in the corsetry world and then just bitterly disappointed when it turned out like that.

I think understanding the mix is huge. They are not going for 100% and I think it works because its bringing this world (regency) up to where the masses can understand it without feeling overwhelmed. Interesting conjectures as always :) I’m definitely not an expert but I think the cocoon-like sleeves on Kate’s dresses are a nod toward traditional Indian clothing. The dress colours too. They fit her characters, balanced between past in India and now being in England. Her sister on the other hand is trying to fit perfectly into the English society so hers are more “proper debutant” with paler shades and more traditional cuts.

It's the producers who have a say in that. The costume designers don't even get much time to properly measure the actors and get them a good fit, since the producers probably rush them. The producers want their artists to suffer, rather than let them have well fitted costumes, it seems. That's why I can't watch periodic dramas like this, because it's always the same thing; ill-fitted corsets, some cheap material that looks like it came from a Halloween shop, lack of research and pushy producers who just don't seem to care at all. It's tiresome and I grow tired of it. Plus, it only makes people buy more into the same, exhausted trope about how "corsets are bad." It needs to stop. Like, corsets, if fitted properly can work wonders on a person's back and can be comfortable or they could use stays, which work well too. But nope, the ignorant producers won't have that. :'( Also, tl;dr, I agree with your comment about a shift. I feel so bad for the actresses.

I think they made Edwina's fashion more heavily Regency inspired to go along with the fact that she was the diamond of the season. Daphne also tended to wear more pastel Regency gowns and was also a diamond! Visually, it's a great way to show that Edwina embodies what a woman is supposed to be. Characters who don't really fit in, like Eloise and Kate, are given dresses that don't really match history. And then the Featherington girls and Cressida wear absurd colors, unrealistic plastic flowers, crazy hairdos, etc to show that they're trying to overcompensate but still don't meet the standards set. I love that Bridgerton doesn't try to be too realistic with its costumes (or other visual elements), music or stories. Just give me pretty sparkly dresses, violin covers of Taylor Swift, and romance troupes!

I'm a wig maker and the giant wigs are actually very light! The inside is made of hollow shapers then the hair is draped over top and pinned. Its harder to not hit someone with it than it is on your neck to wear it.

So recently I read a lot about regency gothic and it totally changed my mind about a lot of period dramas but Bridgerton especially. During the 1800s a lot of critics were actually just as horrified by the visual arts of the time as many historical enthusiasts are by Bridgerton now. Regency gothic was characterised by this: a time period would be set for a novel/play/painting but then the actual story wouldn't keep up with it at all. One person would be wearing a dress from 1700s, a cloak from 1500s and talk about drinking coffee, all supposedly set in 1200s. It was done on purpose - for aesthetics. It was supposed to create this feeling of something old and nostalgic while also being close enough for the reader so that he could relate to the book/art and believe the events happening there could also happen to him. It influenced fashion as well, especially in the 1810s, they'd add ruffles and lace to everything because even to them it felt vintage and romantic. Regency gothic was ahistorical on purpose to make you feel excited and inspired (fitting for romanticism as well). That's basically what Bridgerton is doing and I have a feeling fans of gothic in the 1800s would absolutely be fans of this series. Nowadays, we have this victorian, purist way of thinking about art recreating history but to be honest - it's art, not a documentary. As long as the artists behind it don't say "we're showing you 100% historical truth here", it really doesn't have to be realistic. It's not even necessarily a failed attempt at recreating history - it's just a completely different genre. So it's ok to just relax and like it without having to feel guilty cause it's not historically accurate or something. It's not attempting to be anyting, it's its own thing. I really liked the costumes in both seasons! There was an extra wearing a really pretty pink dress that looked like it belonged to late victorian regency nostalgia painting, and they paired it with a modern necklace (from Les Nereides by the look of it), it looked really cute. What's with the corsets though? Not only are they pointless, they make the dresses fit unwell around the bust area. And they're apparently badly fitted since the actresses are in so much pain. You're right, they should just go for some stays/bra combo next time.

I certainly love the colors and the more fantasy aesthetic. Here's hoping that allows for more colorful costumes in these period dramas. The Gilded Age certainly had the actresses in gorgeous dresses that were bright and vibrant. I also kind of loved seeing Mrs. Russell in styles that had a more modern touch because it makes sense for her character being nouveau riche.

As a fantasy version of 1814 where racism doesn’t exist, I REALLY wish sexism didn’t exist either, although I realize that many plot points would be impossible, like women being forced to marry a man just because they were in the same room unchaperoned. Homophobia too, but maybe the queen will declare that gay is ok and it can go away just like racism did.

honestly, the corset drama with the show is one of the main things keeping me from watching. the fact that we're almost immediately hit with a tightlacing scene (for regency stays???) season one is SUCH a massive turn-off for me. and these reports of injury due to corsets are either due to extreme negligence on the part of the costumers - to the point where I'm completely confused as to HOW they managed to fuck up that badly - or it's all just lies to make a stir in the media

Something about the womens clothing, hair, jewellery this season didn't quite read as regency to me. A few episodes in I realised it was because it reminded me more about the 1910s (I think because of the hairstyles, sleeves and jewellery). I do enjoy a modern take on period dramas, if they are done well. It is like you said in your review of Bridgerton season 1, if the right silhouette is there you can get away with crazy, modern fabrics and the likes. I just feel like something is a bit off in this one. That beeing said, I do enjoy Bridgerton in all its' colourful, sparkly grandeur! Edit: It also triggers me that every woman in the series is like "Oh we need 5 new dresses for tonights ball! No problem, right?" Are the script writers not aware that everything was hand sewn and a dress probably took weeks, if not months to make? 🙈 Rant over! Also Karolina, you look so lovely!

@@emilylewis5373 During most of our fashion history though there were no pre-made clothing. That started showing up during the beginning of the 1900s. Clothing had to be ordered in advance and were made to fit the specific individual for which it was intended. Making a garment from scratch, including taking measurements and cutting pattern pieces, is very time-consuming. It would be near-impossible to make a ballgown in a day even with a modern sewing machine, and in the early 1800s everything was made by hand and hand sewing is time-consuming, even if you are a very skilled seamstress or tailor. I think Karolina points this out in the video she made about season 1, but I am not 100% sure. Also I am sure Bridgerton is not the only series that does this. t is however very evident as they feature the dress shop quite frequently. Sorry for the incredibly long answer, I just wanted to explain myself properly 😅

kate's color pallet and jewelry had all influence from Indian clothing and jewels and I loved it it shows how she is from another culture and is proud of that, which made her character stand out even more . not historically accurate but kinda amazing and personal for the character, and if we look at anglo Indians historical pictures ,there are lots of intersting combination between Indian traditional dresses and british ones , so a combination of both cultures is not far away from reality

one thing I did very much appreciate was that, particularly in the "fancier" ball etc scenes, Kate's clothing tended to call to mind cholis later in the series when she was shot from the waist up, due to the colours, cuts, and embellishments used. I thought it was a great choice for character enhancement as she began to change her mind to wanting to maintain her part of India in England rather than returning to the her former home. it's one of the things I love so much about costume: how it can tell part of the story in a language that some can see and understand and many just absorb without knowing they've done so

I had mixed feelings about the costumes last season, but they clicked for me when I saw all the TikToks people made and realised how accessible the aesthetic is. Just put on a satin dress and a tiara and you can get the vibe. I love 2020 Emma but it's very intimidating to me, a person who loves historical fashion, sews, but has never sewn anything historical (except for a very simple 1920s dress). I found myself this season thinking about how I could put together an Eloise inspired look. I feel like I could thrift a lot of it as well!

I really liked the mash up of influences they had, the slight recency silhouette, combined with the fabulous colour and beading that you see in Indian/Nepalese dress and, the sparkle and SPICE you see on the cover of genre of book the series is based off. At one point there was a dress I spotted, I think the lead was wearing, that had the exact beading and hue to a dress I was given by my mother's Nepalese ex-partner. I spent a moment with a photo up to the screen and I wonder if the beading pattern used was a traditional one because it was remarkably similar. My cat then proceeded to vomit on the inly copy of said photo so I'm going to have to seach for that costume for the beading pattern again.

A world where class society still exists but where the Britain of the time welcomed other cultures openly and integrated people of all races in its society. As someone who has worn corsets extensively for classical theatre- if it is laced and fitted correctly it should not hurt. It doesn’t leave any more marks on the skin than a modern bra does and honestly it helped my posture and my neck pain from hunching over all the time. You don’t tightlace like they show in movies anymore than you would buy a bra too small on purpose. You also have to remember that the initial tight feeling goes away as you get used to it and that doesn’t mean you need to lace it tighter the next time (hello heartburn) not does it mean you’ve “stretched out” the lacings. 30 minutes of corset safety from any costume shop manager will set the record straight

@@lixak6307 To clarify I have nothing against properly worn and fitted corsetry, I just find it odd that they made a decision not to show them in the show but reportedly used them anyway, and the more bra-like undergarments arewhat would have been worn with the dresses they're wearing. Not that period accuracy's much of a thing, but it's a werid decision to show one thing on screen whilst the actual costumes had completely different undergarments.
