Norwegian rap duo Karpe is Chirag Rashmikant Patel and Magdi Omar Ytreeide Abdelmaguid. In 2022 they released Omar Sheriff, a music project packed full of tributes and nods to their background (Chirag being of Indian and Magdi being of Egyptian origin). They mix Norwegian with Arabic, Hindi, Gujarati and English in a way no one has done before them - call it 'diaspora pop'. As someone who came to Australia at the age of 20 and after 19 years of living here and having my own family it’s still a constant inner fight to feel at home. I cried after hearing my language Gujarati in the new song Piya Piya Calling from Coke studio Pakistan as we hardly get representation in Music. I had to find out who this man was and low and behold it was Chirag Patel. I can't believe that another Gujarati is one of the biggest superstars of Norway. As an immigrant (from South Asia) and living in Canada for 22 years, I just felt this song. At times, it felt personal. Only if people knew the struggles that immigrants go through. Their profound impact on our culture and changing the way things was is beoynd what most of could have donne. The shows are sold out, always.
