I’ve honestly found that some of my favorite movies to watch in the air are the life-changing ones. I do understand the easy to digest part but I mean for goodness sake you’re all the way in the air traveling the world, it sometimes feels so fitting to watch a movie that matches that feeling. That is, if you’re someone who doesn’t fly too often anyways, that mystery & surreal feeling is always there. Viewing Waves on my way back home is seriously an experience I’ll never forget.

I’ve come to a recent realization that the best airplane movies are Miyazaki movies for a multitude of reasons. They’re beautiful, vibrant, digestible, and usually pretty safe. They’re very visual stories, so easy to just sit back and watch without really needing to be analytical. The music is always astounding, and I feel like I always catch anybody next to me always watching and smiling. And also coincidentally, Miyazaki had a fascination with aviation , so planes are pretty prominently featured in a lot of his movies, always making something about watching them on the plane feel very right, very safe.
@grantreill1966

facts I think Spirited Away loses points for being a little spooky, but I think my favorite Miyazaki airplane watch was having a two year old next to me giggle as I watched My Neighbor Totoro :). her parents were like "wow what is that? cool movie man!" so I hope I got to introduce a whole family to a classic.

For me, sound is also a factor. I don't watch musicals on a flight. I often only have earphones with me, so the constant hum of the plane is inescapable. For other movies, I just put on subtitles, but when it's a musical I want to be able to hear the music properly.

I think you also have to be aware of the fact that certain airlines engage in light censorship with the movies offered on their in-flight entertainment. It meant that I missed a whole scene in The Shape of Water which made some things in the rest of the movie make less sense. Also the time I was rewatching The Social Network and they dubbed over the "along with my hoodie and my fuck you flip flops" with the most horrendously done ADR I've ever heard to clean up the language. The first time I watched Parasite was on a plane since it hadn't released in the UK at that point. I also watched The Breakfast Club for the first time on a flight, it was a good one for it. Mad Max Fury Road is one I've watched a bunch of times in the air.

Catch Me if You Can is my favorite movie to watch on an airplane. It’s bright, happy, and colorful, it’s decently long and the plot moves along at a great pace, and it doesn’t have anything in the way of disturbing imagery. And it does such a good job of capturing that mid-20th century magic that airlines used to have that it makes your boring flight to Arizona feel stately and stylish.

when I was like 16 I was on a flight alone and I'm 5'0" with a baby face so everyone thought I was a little kid. For the most part the flight attendants were more attendant (hehe) and being offered the kids menu meant I had to eat less airplane food so it was pretty nice. Cut to later in the flight during a slightly dark lit scene in the R-rated marvel film Deadpool, not only did the reflection show my gross 10th-hour-of-the-flight hair, but also the look of absolute horror on the flight attendant behind me who was about to offer me some more orange juice.

In The Heights was amazing on my flight, especially since I was missing home, and home is NYC, so thank god that In The Heights was there to remind me of home!

Around a year ago I watched Nobody on a flight and it has stuck with me ever since. It was like 9 PM so everything outside was dark, and the movie fit that tone perfectly.

The high altitude of the plane made Get Him to the Greek was the funniest movie I'd ever seen at the time. Rewatching at ground level did not do movie justice.

I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for the first time on a twelve hour flight to Japan, I haven't been on such a long flight in ages and it was literally the best airplane experience I've ever had.

I love how this video came up just as I was considering what movies to download for my flight tomorrow 😂 Before I saw this, I was considering a lot of the same factors and I have to agree! Some of my all time favorites for flights are the Ocean’s movies (Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13). They’re fun, brightly colored, and have great stories. However, I’ll never forget when I watched M. Night’s Split on a flight coming home, and as soon as I landed I immediately rented the sequel, Glass (I had already seen Unbreakable years before). What an experience!

This essay is almost a short story about your travel psychology. I don’t feel half the things you are motivated by at the end and was drawn in by how the reasons you gave revealed how you thought about those strange inbetween spaces of trips.

Totally agree with all of your points! I recently flew to Paris and I watched The French Dispatch and Rocketman, both movies I had been meaning to watch for the first time. I didn't end up appreciating French Dispatch as I normally would a Wes Anderson film because it has darker scenes and I couldn't get easily sucked into the movie. But I loved watching Rocketman. It was visually bright, and a familiar genre that I always enjoy watching. Great video that will definitely be called upon before my next flight!

This is so funny, I am actually getting on a couple planes today (San Antonio to Salt Lake City, then Salt Lake City to Seattle), and this popped up in my subscription feed. Now, the two flights I am taking are probably too short to watch a movie (about two and a half hours each) plus, I don't know what selection that Delta Airlines will have, but I will keep this in mind the next time I take MUCH longer flight! Kudos!

I watched the French Dispatch and Blackkklansman on the flight to Italy I took. The old man beside me was likely very confused but hey, I wanted to catch upon a release I missed and enjoy one of my favorite films.

21 gets my vote for the best airplane movie. It’s easy to watch, engaging, and has people traveling to Vegas in planes which make the movie more relatable up there.

I think your last point is the most significant. There are times where I want to watch a film I’ve never seen before and there are times when I couldn’t think of doing anything worse. An aeroplane context would very much fall into the latter
