I’ve honestly found that some of my favorite movies to watch in the air are the life-changing ones. I do understand the easy to digest part but I mean for goodness sake you’re all the way in the air traveling the world, it sometimes feels so fitting to watch a movie that matches that feeling. That is, if you’re someone who doesn’t fly too often anyways, that mystery & surreal feeling is always there. Viewing Waves on my way back home is seriously an experience I’ll never forget.

I’ve come to a recent realization that the best airplane movies are Miyazaki movies for a multitude of reasons. They’re beautiful, vibrant, digestible, and usually pretty safe. They’re very visual stories, so easy to just sit back and watch without really needing to be analytical. The music is always astounding, and I feel like I always catch anybody next to me always watching and smiling. And also coincidentally, Miyazaki had a fascination with aviation , so planes are pretty prominently featured in a lot of his movies, always making something about watching them on the plane feel very right, very safe.
@grantreill1966

facts I think Spirited Away loses points for being a little spooky, but I think my favorite Miyazaki airplane watch was having a two year old next to me giggle as I watched My Neighbor Totoro :). her parents were like "wow what is that? cool movie man!" so I hope I got to introduce a whole family to a classic.

For me, sound is also a factor. I don't watch musicals on a flight. I often only have earphones with me, so the constant hum of the plane is inescapable. For other movies, I just put on subtitles, but when it's a musical I want to be able to hear the music properly.

Catch Me if You Can is my favorite movie to watch on an airplane. It’s bright, happy, and colorful, it’s decently long and the plot moves along at a great pace, and it doesn’t have anything in the way of disturbing imagery. And it does such a good job of capturing that mid-20th century magic that airlines used to have that it makes your boring flight to Arizona feel stately and stylish.

I think you also have to be aware of the fact that certain airlines engage in light censorship with the movies offered on their in-flight entertainment. It meant that I missed a whole scene in The Shape of Water which made some things in the rest of the movie make less sense. Also the time I was rewatching The Social Network and they dubbed over the "along with my hoodie and my fuck you flip flops" with the most horrendously done ADR I've ever heard to clean up the language. The first time I watched Parasite was on a plane since it hadn't released in the UK at that point. I also watched The Breakfast Club for the first time on a flight, it was a good one for it. Mad Max Fury Road is one I've watched a bunch of times in the air.

I watched Once Upon a Time in Hollywood for the first time on a twelve hour flight to Japan, I haven't been on such a long flight in ages and it was literally the best airplane experience I've ever had.

I think an Interstellar rewatch on the plane is an amazing experience. I also did a double feature of Juno and Lady bird recently on a long flight and it was great.

This essay is almost a short story about your travel psychology. I don’t feel half the things you are motivated by at the end and was drawn in by how the reasons you gave revealed how you thought about those strange inbetween spaces of trips.

i love the topic, makes a ton of sense too. the more familar you are with the movie, the faster it'll feel in the air.

The first time I came across the series Nathan For You was on an 17 hour flight from LA to Singapore back in 2018. I was crying from laughter somewhere over Siberia and kept waking up my neighbors. I haven't seen it on an in flight entertainment screen since.

I watched the French Dispatch and Blackkklansman on the flight to Italy I took. The old man beside me was likely very confused but hey, I wanted to catch upon a release I missed and enjoy one of my favorite films.

RyanAir flight from Budapest to NYC. My cousin, next to me, watched all three LoTR films (for the first time, may I add) back-to-back-to-back. Legend.

Watching Gravity in airplane is one of my best movie experiences for the last few years. Especially the scene of the accident in the movie, which I watched when airplane was taking off. Oh my God, it was fantastic. Also, flight lasted for an hour and a half, the movie has the same duration. In general, I advise everyone to watch Gravity in a really short flight

my favorite airline experience was when i was on a 7 hour flight, watched dune, fell asleep in the middle of the movie, chose to rewatch it, fell asleep again, and landed. amazing. 10/10

Around a year ago I watched Nobody on a flight and it has stuck with me ever since. It was like 9 PM so everything outside was dark, and the movie fit that tone perfectly.

MOST essential is that many scope aspect ratio movies are cropped to fit a 16x9 android tablet screen. Since you don't have internet it's sometimes hard to know which movies have been cropped, but if it says it was formatted to fit the screen run away! (Many many many movies on airplanes are)

I think your last point is the most significant. There are times where I want to watch a film I’ve never seen before and there are times when I couldn’t think of doing anything worse. An aeroplane context would very much fall into the latter

My favorite plane movie is moonfall. Watching it on a long flight from Chicago to Milan made it hit so much harder. Madagascar 2 and marvel movies are great too.

The high altitude of the plane made Get Him to the Greek was the funniest movie I'd ever seen at the time. Rewatching at ground level did not do movie justice.

21 gets my vote for the best airplane movie. It’s easy to watch, engaging, and has people traveling to Vegas in planes which make the movie more relatable up there.

The best airplane movie experience I've had was National Treasure. It's decently funny and the mystery is engaging enough. I have pretty severe flight anxiety, and I've found light-hearted action/adventure movies to be the best for me. I recommend Marvel movies, especially if there are some you haven't gotten around to seeing, those are the best for flights. Anything slow will not distract me enough. Anything that gives me anxiety is very unwelcome - especially anxiety around heights, falling, or crashing, etc.
