To some extend you are correct but Muslim League party workers already had started killing Sikhs in Rawalpindi early in early 1947 to cause all of this hell breaking in panjab. MA Jinnah never condemned it. Tara Singh wasn't left with much choice either. I don't think people of panjab were ever asked or voted for partition so I consider it not legitimate from panjabi point of view.

@waseemabbaskwl Yes Khalistan movement started after 1984 and still many Sikhs don't want to live with Hindu India. I agree to some extent Sikh Akali leaders are to be blamed and I don't support Tara Singh but there was no common Punjab party to represent Punjabiyaat and congress took full benefit of situation by exploiting the killings of Sikhs in Rawalpindi. I do believe there was a failure on part of Muslim league to not condemn these killings. Of course I agree with you this one event shouldn't have led to divided Punjab and it was a mistake by Akalis to go with India. Sikhs have much more common with Punjabi Muslims than Hindu India

@waseemabbaskwlYes, Sikhs have more connections in West Punjab than rest of India. I don't blame anybody else more than Akalis for dividing Punjab but it is important to know what happened during this time in Punjab. Tiwana who was the Punjabi Muslim CM was forced to resign by Muslim League in 1947 and all hell broke loose in Punjab after collapse of Punjab government. The Punjab Unionist Party which was a legitimate party of Punjab peasantry also completely collapsed during this time. After this, Akalis backed by less than 10% of Sikhs took benefit of the situation by being stooges of Congress. By making Rawalpindi massacre an excuse, Akalis along with Congress proposed to divide Punjab against the will of Sikhs. At this time Akalis were stooges of Congress and not legitimate representatives of Sikhs. By dividing Punjab, Akalis caused pain to all Punjabis-Sikhs, Muslims and Hindus.

It was Muslim League who initiated ethnic cleansing of Sikhs in Rawalpindi before all hell broke in Panjab to form Pakistan because Muslim League never had legislative majority in panjab to form Pakistan so they restored to ethnic cleansing to force the British to divide Panjab.
