As someone else mentioned, this is probably the first rendition with so much emotion and expression that the poet's voice really shines through effortlessly in Karthik's eloquence. Perhaps it's lacking in rigidity of the genre, but this is a fusion piece. It's obvious, and an inherent feature of the genre that some consider a flaw. While I respect others' opinions, there are people criticizing Karthik's dressing in other videos of the katcheri when I don't even begin to see what the relevance is. Music is one of the few things in the world that is still readily available to everyone regardless of age, colour or creed. Even water isn't anymore. Please don't get on your high horses and taint this divine discipline too. No one owns music or has the right to tear the artist apart for simply giving a different take on the same song, simply because it's unacceptable to your purist standards. It's not like anyone forced you to listen to this, if you don't like it simply don't listen.

I applaud you Kartik for being bold and innovative. Let the purists harp. Ignore them. God bless you. Dr. Ananth Sundara-Rajan, Norman, Oklahoma.
Nobody owns compositions; people sing the same thiruppugazh in two or three different paNs. There were days when people nodded their heads for something they did not even comprehend...Karthick, you rock.. own it and celebrate you love.. You bring out the bhakthi...Even your movie songs rock as you absorb the feelings of words and bring them out in your rendering

A beautiful rendition, very soulful and portraying the true bhaavam of this song..... Although paapanaasam shivan wrote this song, it can easily be seen as Devaki's lament....for what greater misfortune might it be for a lady, that the great lord chooses her womb to be born on this mortal world, but doesn't give her the pleasure of seeing him grow, and actually be a mother to him ---- all that was bestowed upon Yashodha, whom krishna calls 'amma'. And hence this soulful song asking Yashodha, how is it really that she got so lucky?

Meaning What penance you did Yashodha? To make the omnipresent parabrahmam call you Mother? The one who created fourteen lokhas hugged, cuddled, fed from you and heard your lullabies! Even Brahma and Indra were jealous to see you have the opp to tie the lord to a pounding stone so as to make him beg for your forgiveness! Sanakaadhi rishi’s with all hardships and toiling attained the purity that you got easily by being his mother!

Purists were hiding their dislike for Tamil on stages. They drew upon Tamil traditions that were older and in fine form and later treated Tamil compositions as less of a devotion; literally taking them out of the katcheris with some oldies and baldies shaking their heads for nothing.. Having lost out to the vernacular's popularity and reception they are now hiding under purity for which they do not have a litmus test. Tamil trinity (Muthu Thandavar, Maritmutha Pillai and Arunachala Kavi) came before Telugu Skt Trinity who lived, trained and composed in the same geographical area. years after them.., It would be great if their compositions are brought out,,,

In splitting divinity into Tamil and Telugu and other some mundanity we are killing the essence of our very roots. When the Trinites wrote these from the vast expanse of their soul there was no one upmanship or language. The soul in its purity saw and sang.Lets pl keep it that way.
