Something no one talks about and as a drummer of 30 years I feel like I have to point out that his posture is absolutely perfect. His upper torso barely moves. Completely efficient. Something that is sorely overlooked by most drummers.

Had the same thought. I'm by no means a highly skilled drummer, but I picked it back up at 31 with a band, and have improved immensely the last 5 years since. And I can tell what a major difference it does to speed and accuracy to be able to have limbs not only move independently from each other, but also from the torso. However, there is something to be said for the "efficiency" of upper body movement in very slow grooves, ballads, waltzes etc.. I feel like it can improve my groove immensely to have a gentle "up and down" rocking of my torso, specially when playing brushes.

My man you're the only one I've ever seen who managed not to only flawlessly plan an Animals As Leaders song, but to improve it as well. You did it with Tooth and Claw and you doubled that with this video. Hats off, I have no doubts in saying that you're the best drummer alive, maybe ever.

Through it all, you were still having fun within the difficulty of this Amazing song, even doing a couple stick tricks when possible.. Brother it is so awesome to witness the fruits of your hard work.. you dont get to this level without the effort.. i hope everyone else in Awe understands that.. You/We can reach this lvl of drumming as well.. if we simply commit to it.. Keep em comin ya Damn Beast!! 😏😎🤙

The first song I ever heard by Animals as Leaders was Brain Dance. It was shared with me by a friend, an accordion player, as we discussed epic guitarists. I had no idea what I was in store for. I have been a fan ever since. I missed my chance to see them live as the pandemic began, but I will definitely go if the opportunity presents itself again. From the time signature changes that seem effortless in their hands and the range of style from songs like Brain Dance and heavy Spanish guitar influence from Javier on Apeirophobia, to the urgency created by the skillful madness Matt unleashes at 2m20s on Ectogenesis, I was completely infatuated the more I listened. There's something especially wonderful and otherworldly about the art they create together. I am a lover of all kinds of music and I'm waiting with great anticipation to hear what your new band brings to the table. I'd wish you great success, but I already feel you cannot fail. ♥ Thank you for sharing what you do with all of us.

Well, I firmly believe you can’t separate the two (regardless of what Jorge said about this previously). Talent of course requires practice. And I adamantly believe that different people have different talents (which is to say that the given ability comes easier to them). I don’t believe that anyone can become great by just practice. You need some “mind/body/cultural -presets” to excel at specific things. Not everyone can become the greatest drummer in the world, or the fastest runner, or the best chess player by just practice…
