@@lemigrant agreed. No one disputes Jordan's technical abilities and mastery. But since he's joined he transformed the keyboard to basically be another guitar player. If you listen to this compared to say Justin Stanton's appearance, its miles different. Jordan is syncopating with the guitar, he's not modulating or changing the feel of the song. For purposes of this video, I'd say thats fine, and its amazing how quickly he can pick up this song and play it. But a keyboardist should be so much more than that. Look at the magic of Richard Barbieri (Porcupine Tree) or Riverside (sorry dont know keyboardist name!). Even old DT before Jordan, or even old DT in Jordan's early years. The keys brought such a huge dynamic. Now it just brings a sound like another soloing Guitar. It was the sound that was getting old when MP left (he originally wanted a hiatus because it felt monotonous to him). Some of DT best "new" songs are when Jordan has his own parts (think count of tuscany, octavarium...which isnt even "new" these days).

@@CanadianDivergenthaha nice one, but alsooo as someone with perfect pitch, weirdly enough it can change over time. I've had to basically retune my brain for what I intuitively think of when I hear each note, because even though I have clear and vivid reactions to when I'd hear, for example, C as a child, if I actually hum those same childhood notes, they're all flat by basically the same amount. Nowadays I know what each note ACTUALLY is, but every now and then it just doesn't FEEL right, even if I KNOW that it is. It's real weird, but kinda like if most people were kiiiinda colourblind, I can see colours, but the same colors I remember as a kid have actually shifted on the colour wheel compared to what my eyes are telling me, like if true red seems a little more orangey than it should. You almost have to relearn those colours and their relations to each other. It's one of the few truly frustrating things about having perfect pitch. Please! More with Jordan Rudess! I would watch every video with this man. Maybe it's easy to say, but this man studied at Juilliard and has been a fundamental piece in a band as incredible as Dream Theater for years. He is a master. There are probably few like him: it's not just the technique and the speed, it's not just the technology and all the sounds that he can get from that Korg Kronos in sub-second transitions, but it's also all the musical heritage and influence of the last 30 years. An inspiration for many. For me, the best.

For anyone wondering, the time signature is split in a repeated two measure 4/4 and 5/4 time. So the first measure is in 4/4 time and the second measure that follows is in 5/4, allowing the melody to come full circle after each section. Sometimes a decision or argument can be made for switching the measure and making the 5/4 measure as the first and then following that with the 4/4 measure, however, the phrasing of the melody and how the rhythm is built around it made me suspect that it IS starting with the 4/4 measure and then having the second measure be 5/4 time. Having multiple time signatures is especially common when it is used to create a compound time signature, such as the 4/4-5/4 time signature that is used in this song. That is just for the main chorus. Not sure about the rest of the song.

For years I've said we need to get Garstka on drums, Rudess on keyboard, and Petrucci on guitar to write an instrumental prog album.

@@tomvesely4008 LTE is essentially an instrumental DT but cooler, it's already been done and I don't think we need another LTE copy. Matt Garstka does quite a different thing than the shred-oriented stuff LTE tends to indulge itself into and he writes his own drum parts or whole compositions himself as well. It would be interesting to see them figuring out how to incorporate their own styles and influences and synthesize it into something fresh. Matt Garstka has worked on numerous artists of various influences while Jordan Rudess's contribution on Mahandini album by Dewa Budjana is arguably my favorite non-DT works of his by far.

6:06 This man didn't enter when he should've, what they call: loosing the cue. And yet, he immediately knew where to enter and in which part of the arrangement he was... THAT'S NUTS! That level of musical resiliency is absurdly rare, most people lose the cue and immediately become a mess, specially if they are doing something else like in his case. This man is the definition of being a master.
