Just a little tip if you do this again (that would be great :D) that I used to use for clay (slightly different from the clay in this video), if you draw a little sketch on parchment paper/baking paper and press in on the clay then the drawing will appear on the clay. it would be easier to cut out for custom shapes! Anyway, the pins look awesome! Will definitely do this sometime

@@rainbeep I can't tell because I don't work with resin, but I play D&D and I saw resin dice breaking that were not cured evenly, or long enough. How thick the resin layer need to be? again, I don't work with the stuff so I can't tell you an educated guess! I just thought that is an awkward request for Kasey because what if she put them for sale and they crack or break? What if they are perfectly fine and she undersell them? Little tip with clay! There’s a clay “glue” called liquid sculpy! It’s a glue like substance you use with oven bake clay! It bakes with the clay and helps it stick! There’s clear and glittery but it can be a life saver! Especially when sticking clay to clay or items to clay! It’s super helpful!

Tip: If you play around with clay more. Plastic kind of "melts" oven bake clay which makes it stick to the plastic surface more (like the cookie cutter). Also if you want to get rid of fingerprints without the pain of sanding use nail polish remover and a cotton swab to smooth the surface of the clay before baking.

How high did you have your oven? At 100 - 110 celcius you can bake them nearly as long as you want without risking burning. Also you can cover with foil to prevent some burning. But yeah its only really an issue if you're using coloured clay that you don't intend to paint, gessoing over is a totally valid option! One of the earliest tips I got was to bake my clay at a lower temp than the instructions said, but for a longer amount of time. Sanding is also totally fine but yeah, some of the shapes could have easily been refined while the clay was soft -- that's the point behind clay after all, that you can shape it. But you did a really great job as usual, they came out awesome

This is a mystery to me. I made another batch to burn on purpose (the burnt cookie look was too cute to resist) and had them in the oven for an hour at the correct temperature… then another hour for a higher temperature before they burned. So I have NO IDEA how they burned on 15 minutes?!

@@KaseyTheGolden Many ovens have unexpected spikes in temperature that can burn your clay. Tenting your clay under aluminium foil can really help with that! (Also, another tip; when you put plastic wrap on top of your clay slab when cutting with the cookie cutters, you get a smooth rounded edge!)

@@KaseyTheGolden If you popped them in while your oven was in its preheating mode, that could've been why they burnt so fast! Some ovens do an "extreme heat" to get it up to temperature before dropping back down to what you need. 🥴Ovens can be feral
@beautifulenigma1724

@@KaseyTheGolden maybe because the batch you burned came out of the oven, cooled, and went back in again? I don’t know much about clay, but I don’t think it’s supposed to go back in the oven after you’ve taken it out. I could be wrong though. But if you make cookies and take them out before they’re done cooking and let them cool, putting them back in the oven wouldn’t cook them the rest of the way, they’d just burn. Regardless, this was a fun video to watch! I especially like (what looks like) the extra resin around the cat yolks. It makes them look even more egg-like. Great stuff as always!

I love the sad penguin!! He's my favourite. Kasey, polymer clay is supposed to be slightly flexible. Best tip I have gotten is when you bake your pieces put the tray or whatever you have them on into the oven when you turn it on, don't let it pre-heat and then when they're done, leave them in the oven until the oven and your pieces have fully cooled, then remove them from the oven. Sometimes if the temperature is vastly different between the low heat of the oven and the room you leave them in to cool it can cause the clay to crack or lose strength. It's difficult to see accurately on camera but perhaps the pieces were a little bit too thin? I bought a used pasta roller and use that to roll out clay because they have different thickness settings. When it comes to actual sculptures, once you have something you like, bake it so you don't squish it white making the next part - polymer clay can be baked repeatedly and if you're worried about burning you can cover thinner parts/extremities like ears/fingers/wings etc with foil while you bake to prevent it burning. If in doubt, watch a ton of Ace of Clay's videos, Anthony is a true master with clay and gives great tips/tutorials.

These turned out super cute! Parchment paper and notebook paper work fine for me for cutting and rolling. Also, if you decide you like doing clay, buy a cheap pasta machine. Makes a big difference in being able to make blends and vary thicknesses in a consistent way. Using a piece of foil to make a tent, and then putting a piece of parchment paper under the stuff that’s baking helps avoid burnination.

I turn my oven down 10-15 degrees and bake for longer. You can always burry them in corn starch to prevent browning which happens with white alot. You don't need to score PC that's a ceramics thing, just push them together. You can use liquid clay to bond if the ability to press hard is hindered. I haven't used a lot of sculpey original but some clays are naturally bending when fit for example cause clay stays flexible so if you're doing like really thin pieces a lot of people use cosplay because it will be able to bend without breaking so they may have been cooked just fine and it's just a clay that's a little more bendy. I like sculpey Primo the best it is fairly shatter resistant though I have still broken thin pieces. I haven't used a lot of sculpey original because I usually don't paint my pieces I just use the colored clay

It can be brittle but it seems its just burn on the outside, id just be careful with these ones mark the onrs that are burnt and retry with cooking on a different set later. If your unsure i suggest looking at the clay your using, recommendation online then finally due test trials with 5 small, 5 medium, 5 large, and 5 extra large to detmine how long each one needs at said temp lets say xl is 1.5 inchs thick, large is 1 inch thick, medium is half inch thick and small is your prefered thickness This will allow you to determine how long at a set temp for the clay used you will actually need.

Tips for polymer clay: Buy a cheap ceramic flooring tile, you can get a 1 foot/ 30cm square for about 1 USD at most hardware stores. This is the BEST surface to work on and you can bake direct on it. If you are concerned about the back being shiny, use a piece of paper. Buy a tissue blade, it's great for picking up unbaked pieces without distorting them. BE CAREFUL, VERY SHARP. Polymer clay, especially sculpey works GREAT with acrylic paint. Try adding some texture, adding some paint, spritzing it with water and wiping off the top layer. Chalk pastels or even eyeshadow are great for highlights on UNBAKED polymer clay. No sealant needed just burnish it in. You can't ruin polymer clay by overbaking, only by baking it too hot. Lower your oven temperature by one or two degrees.

Your first issue is using sculpey classic. You want sculpey 3 or even better PRIMO. You also wanna cover the thinner elements of the piece with aluminum foil to keep convection from hitting and burning it in the oven. Lastly pay CLOSE attention to the thickness. You wanna adjust the baking time proportional to the directions on the back.
@nokiot9
@nokiot9 2 жыл бұрын
Original sculpey is usually used for plasticine replacement or extremely thick and beefy sculptures. It has a tendency to crack and burn the thinner it is. You can buy translucent kato poly or primo and cut it into the classic to help with it. I’d be extremely skeptical of that skill share if they told you to use classic sculpey in an application like this
