I feel like I have more control with the pencils than I do with an actual paint brush.. then again, I have refused to use watercolor for a few years because I just had such a bad experience with it. Maybe I would like it more now. Anyway, been obsessed with Derwent Inktense pencils which I *think* are watercolor ones?

You don't have to do like...a thick saturated layer of pencil. Have you tried light coloring? I noticed when I tried watercolor pencils that when I pressed too hard I got that grainy texture. When I colored lightly I didn't. and it smoothed out fine. Granted I know jackshit about watercolors PFFT

You just need to learn how to use watercolour pencils- use the texture to your advantage. Crosshatch different coloured pencils together. Use them with different media- you can use them to line- add to watercolour illustrations. Beatrice Alemagna is a good example of an illustrator who uses them
@wackity.78796 жыл бұрын
Also you can just reactivate a few lines/areas within an image. Don't think about them being an alternative watercolour- think as them as being a unique thing to experiment with
@aliya80366 жыл бұрын
I don’t use watercolor pencils like that. I draw in another paper with the pencils, then take a water brush and take the pigment of the pencils that is in the other paper and put the color down in my drawing. I don’t know if you understand, it’s hard to explain since I’m not an English speaker. But if you do understand, you should try!
@serentique6 жыл бұрын
MissLilou You may as well just get actual watercolours if your just using the straight pigment.

@skaweirromeda67876 жыл бұрын
I use them over slightly wet watercolors to make sharper details
@meikahidenori6 жыл бұрын
@@serentique i use them in the same fashion, mostly because i have slight colour blindness which makes mixing actual paints very difficult for me, and as a bonus are far less messy to take with me traveling around especially with kids! To get the best use out of them as pencils or a mix media combo you need smoother paper than standard cold press watercolour paper. Also, the watercolour pencils you tend to find in the Scrawlrbox are the middle range types instead of artist grade which doesn't always show the best pencil ranges in a good light if you've never used a certain brand before. With the grainyness of using them as straight pencils you can have the same argument with prisma colours, but if you know how to use them and use the right paper you can avoid that awful clumpy/scratchy effect in the same way as with watercolour pencils.
@justanotherpiccplayer35116 жыл бұрын
Also another way I used the pencils to get a smoother texture was by putting a wet brush on the pencil to pick up the colour and then using the brush on the paper

I think you're kind of taken back by the watercolour pencils because you wanna use them just like paints? I think those pencils require a different technique because as you already said it kinda seems 'redundant' to paint it all in and then go over it with water? I still really like the outcome a lot !
@AstarTiamat4 жыл бұрын
A good thing for her to try is do the outlines and pull the pigment into the drawing. But yeah, thing she needs to try more watercolor pencil techniques instead of water color or color pencil techniques.
@monstersinmayhem83396 жыл бұрын
It's easier to use the side of the pencil for a smoother look, and to drag the water in a circular motion rather than side to side. Water color pencils take awhile to get used to, but once you get the hang of it they are a lot of fun. You can also use a wet brush to steal the pigment directly from the pencil if that's easier for you.
@saisriv03046 жыл бұрын
Kasey- with water color pencils you don't have to draw on the paper. If you scribble on some plastic, or even take pigment straight from the pencil, it'll be more smooth. Also, I love you but use a flat brushhhhhhh

@r0ch4525 жыл бұрын
You can take the color straight form the pencil with the brush and use it more like paint. I use mine as basically a paint stick, it’s a lot smoother that way Or you can dip the pencil directly into water to get a more saturated color. But it doesn’t last long so it works best for small areas

From what I understood, they are supposed to be like graphite pencils, but with color, and though they are water-soluble that isn't their main purpose. I wasn't super keen on them, but I do think they would be nice for graphite studies and sketches like we used to do in my art class - might have to give them a fair try in that. And in defense of the white; it works great for blending and light construction lines on dark paper

Hey Kasey! Have you ever tried just using watercolor pencils for only the pigment? Like coloring on a scratch piece of paper and wetting the pigment to pick it up and use them like normal water colors? I’ve seen a few artist use that technique and have good results! I agree with you about how you can’t really get rid of the texture and make it smooth like watercolors when coloring with them traditionally. Maybe this would give you a way to use them!
@giuliadr92056 жыл бұрын
In highschool I used this type of pencils on top of soft pastels to add details and stuff. Personally I didn’t like the grainy texture cause I like my pencils to be smooth haha, though I noticed that if you want to make a nice base with pencils, try and go in the same direction and don’t change it and use the same pressure so you can layered it later. After that I like the story and the drawing is cute, really like the big pointy nose 👍🏻

To get an even and vibraint color with watercolor pencils, yo need a complete smooth color. Not only that but water color pencils only make it smoother after drawing. For example, when drawing skin. Water will make it look smoother and less like pencils.

The thing about color pencils is that they're made for layering... after about 6 layers the texture starts to disappear... it's a controlled slow going medium...
