Kashgar City ( or more popularly called Kashi locally ) is the most western city in China bordering Kyrgystan and Tajikistan to the west. From an ancient city on northern Silk Road, it has progressed rapidly to become a modern city today, second largest in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, after Urumqi. The majority of the population here are Muslim Uyghurs.
