While discussing India's foreign policy at the Council of Foreign Relations in New York, Foreign Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke on India's economic trajectory, the rise of China and India relations with Pakistan and the revocation of Article 370.
On responding to a query about the Kashmir issue, Jaishankar asserted that Article 370 was a bridge that became a barrier and its revocation should not be seen through a communal lens. In an increasingly globalised world, traditional identities matter less than they did in the past, he added.

But it's full of hypocrisy. India today is slowly but surely slipping away from democracy. Its been rightly classified as only partially free democracy under present govt. Human rights are being trampled and freedom of speech suppressed. Harassment of dissenters is increasing. Institutions like CBI ED and Income tax are used to harass political opponents. The recent case of Aakar Patel shows how far it's prepared to go. Contrast this with the escape from India by fugitives like Nirav Modi, Mehul Chokshi and Vijay Mallya under very nose of self - appointed Chowkidar of India! Appears that they were allowed to leave India by design. Or was the Chowkidar sleeping on the watch?

He is cool under intense provocation (questions) but chooses the right word to explain his position. I wish that he continues for the next decade in that post whatever party comes to power. In the past there were, External Affairs ministers with very long innings like Andrei Gromyko in USSR.

@@shahmurtaza1208 Actually I agree that article 370 was, by itself, never any impediment to social economic development. It was article 35A. But removing article 35A, keeping article 370 intact, would have left the door of return of 35A open. But 370 was just a protection of land, jobs and own Constitution and flag just like other states of India under article 371, is blatant lie. Under article 371, no state is allowed own Constitution or flag. That's not so. Only Kashmir had a Constitution and flag of its own. So it needed to be brought down to the level of other states. Kashmir had its own laws on right to education, information, corruption, domicile etc. But they were neither equitable nor justifiable. A law which deprives a girl of some od her previleges if she marries a non-kashmiri or a law that doesn't give domicile status to a section of society in spite of stay in Kashmir for two generations, is not acceptable today and, irrespective of what Kashmiris think, will not be allowed to continue. Kashmiris must learn to live in India as equal citizens, not as a previleged lot.

It is great that India and USA are getting a close alliance...but India is not in the SECURE POSITION TO MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES IN THE INTERNATIONAL PARTNERSHIP because of the following reasons: 1) India has the very confusive mix of PEOPLE WITH different cultures , languages, traditions , race , caste, religions and ethnicity ...!!! So unlike any other country in the world, it is very hard for INDIANS to come to a common consensus for economic and cultural changes and developments...!!! 2 ) India SUFFERED more Post INDEPENDENCE ...than any other country ... because there are many manipulative institutions and organizations against India after 1947 ...!!! 3) Even USA was promoting PAKISTAN & CHINA than INDIA...!!! 4) Infact AMERICAN MEDIA WAS ANTI INDIA AND INDIANS...!!! EVEN MADE MOCKERY OUT OF INDIANS... !!! THEY DID NOT EVEN WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT INDIANS ARE HINDUS NOT BY RELIGION BUT BY BEING THE CITIZENS OF INDIA...!!! They acknowledge Pakistan as not Hindu Religion but hesitant to admit that Pakistan was part HINDU NATION as well...!!! All was part of SUPPRESSIVE AGENDA...!!! 5) USA completely and conveniently IGNORED the SUFFERING OF INDIANS...Prior to I947...!!! Indian communities were suppressed psychologically and financially While THE VICTIM POPULATION OF INDIA are promoting and supporting with the Americans to help the victims of Black Slavery and Holocaust...!!! Prior to 1947 ...Indians and Indian RULERS were under the SUPPRESSIVE FOREIGN REGIME FOR MORE THAN 700 YEARS...!!! But even recently foreign media representatives are talking about mere 200 years of invasion and colonization...!!! It is true that BRITISH colonialism was only from the 16th century...!!! There were players before that...!!! British was the last end of it ...and when they have gone AMERICA continued it discretely ...till 2016...!!! 3 ) U S media hardly talk good about lndia and lndian history , its past glory of class heritage and class civilization existed prior to 14th century when the other worlds were learning to stand on their feet...!!! Western Media especially US media gave no Value to lNDIA other than an impoverished country as far as I know until 2012...!!! 6) AFTER 1947...INDIA was left with an impoverished , SUPPRESSED , DIVIDED AND CONFUSED PEOPLE IN THE COUNTRY...!!! THEY WERE MANIPULATED TO FIGHT AGAINST THEIR OWN FAMILY , SOCIETY AND STATES...!!! BECAUSE THE TRUE ANCIENT HISTORY WAS NOT TO BE REVEALED...!!!???!!! 7) OUR COUNTRY HAD ENEMIES WITHIN AND OUTSIDE...!!! 8 ) USA and its MEDIA played a major role in SUPPRESSING INDIAN PSYCH...THAN THE COLONIAL MASTERS DID ...!!! 9 ) SO , INDIA will take TIME to develop TRUST with AMERICANS...!!! 10) I HOPE BOTH INDIANS AND AMERICANS WILL REALIZE THAT... when They are expecting INDIA to make decisions hastily to CHOOSE SIDES...!!! OTHER COUNTRIES MUST APPRECIATE THAT INDIANS AND THEIR COUNTRY WAS FAIR TO EVERY ONE SINCE ITS ANCIENT TIMES...!!! BUT Our TRUST VIOLATED ...And reduced us to the SLUM DOG MILLIONAIRE...!!! ASK OURSELVES HOW WE BECOME LIKE THAT ...AMERICA KNOWS BETTER...!!! THANK YOU ...!!! STILL HOPING THAT AMERICA WILL BE A BETTER LEADER ALONG WITH THE PARTNERSHIP OF INDIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES...!!!

Mr.Jaishankar is truly one of the 1st instances of meritocracy in Indian politics (of course apart from Mr.NaMo). This interaction is to my mind a fine example of a career diplomat collecting all his experience and formulating responses so aptly to the questions raised by the interviewer and those in the audience. The calm approach he takes symbolizes everything that is proper about the dharmic recommendations of the great indic civilization - which sad to say our 70 odd years of oftentimes vague governance has done a lot to ignore/undermine/downgrade. His analyses and style of response are lessons to our youth in politics - i am sure the remarkable ones among them will do well to learn and adopt. Great that the highest leadership in the country has been able to open its eyes and recruit the right man(in this case) for the globally important job for india. On another thought: Since the abrogation of an Indian constitutional clause seems so important to global commentators... what would our world have been like if such deep questions could have been asked of people like Gandhi. Nehru, and Jinnah when this country was cut into parts....? Tough questions Tough negotiations Tough situations all fall into the lot of Mr. Modi and his government, hopefully we can unite to strengthen the hands of those who want to work for the larger good by not fighting over issues like religion, colors(not of the skin), national language, state language, state flags, water, border cities, cow...etc etc...

SJ has been subjected to answering provocative questions. This has been the Western norm or attitude, facing India. 30:00 This lady, the high priestess of Democracy questions the democratic credentials of India. I think the answer to her should have been much more brutal. 58:00 Somehow the Western opinion-makers (the intelligentsia) were brainwashed to see India as not one (secular) country, but as two nations, one Hindu & another Muslim. This view is an affront to the nationhood of India. While it can't be curbed in those minds, they need to be encouraged to think of India, not in a communal lens of two nations (one Hindu & one Muslim) seven decades of forming Pakistan as homeland to Muslims of India but as integral whole. I wonder why they are raking up the two-nation issue now. This lady's question makes them uncomfortable. Did she receive money for asking this question here about Indian Muslims?

I love how he side steps some questions for which Americans are looking for a 'bite-sized' answer fitting their own narrative. Asking questions like 'Is India hindu nationalist' is like asking whether 'US is white supremacist'. Can't believe some these sweeping uninformed questions!

Jaishankars comments at 12:20 we're a foretelling of how they are handling the Ukraine situation today... "India must have multi-alignment.. keeping well oiled relationships with all the major powers". Of course, American politicians do not listen or are not bright enough to pick up on such details.

Very nicely highlighted the Indian position n this person after analysing this discussion n latest diplomatic moves of India amid fast n day to day changing world order, seems to have potential to don the highest political seat of India. Politicians pl don't mind. But one thing time n again observed that when ever there is discussion on JAMMU and Kashmir issue, it is always addressed as Kashmir by own person n the others including foreigners. Actually, no body could so far explain it, WHY. Where does people of Jammu , the Dogra's n others are placed. Pl start calling JK or Jammu n Kashmir n not only the Kashmir. Respect our sentiments otherwise it seems racial (compelled) Jai Hind

First of all, you can't hand democracy on a platter to people of another country. They have to want it and fight for it themselves. South Africa and Bangladesh are two examples of India promoting representative democracy.

First of all why there is problem in Kashmir? Its because of terror policy of Pakistan and Islam. India now countering this in same way. This is sad but true that punishment is more effective than reward. This is the reason why pak is using terror policy. One plus point for pak is islam. For countering this india have to use muscular plus developmental policy. It will take time. In the mean time weaken Pak.
