*Introduction*
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Potential Paradigms. Today is a deep episode and we are going to be looking at the spiritual and philosophical tradition of  Kashmir. Shaivism often synonymous with tantra  , and some even consider it the distillation of the various schools of philosophy of the Indian subcontinent.
Over the last few decades, Kashmir Shaivism has become quite popular in the West and perhaps over the globe, but this was not always the case.
The tradition of Kashmir Shaivism has been in hiding for the past few centuries because of the several invasions that happened in India. Because of this, it has been quite challenging for the scholars to weave together the intricate web of Kashmir Shaivism because several of the earlier manuscripts of this oral tradition became extinct.
Fortunately for the world luminary philosopher Sage,   by the name of Swami Lakshman Joo was around. Swami   was a   descendant in an unbroken chain of masters in the oral tradition of Kashmir Shaivism. .  He took it upon himself to protect this tradition and freely distribute its knowledge across the world.
Over the last 30 years with the revival of Kashmir Shaivism, there is probably not a single book that does not mention his name, so it's with great delight that introduce our guest  today.
Guest Biography
George Barselaar, is an adept of Kashmir Shaivism and has been a long-term devotee of Swami  Lakshman Joo. He took a keen interest in yoga from an early age, which inspired him to learn Transcendental Meditation (TM). His association with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, who was a close friend of the Swami, eventually led George to the Valley of Kashmir,  where he spent nine years before  Swami Lakshmanjoo's passing in 1991.
Since then, along with his close friends John and Denise Hughes, George has been deeply involved in publishing the teachings of Swami Lakshman Joo in the form of  books, original transcripts and video presentations, which we will be  talking about in this interview.
Through his years with Swami Lakshman Joo George has gained a deep knowledge of Kashmir Shaivism, but at the same time there is an ordinariness about him, which made it a joy to spend some time with him.
This episode is perhaps a valuable  introduction to Tantra and Kashmir Shaivism. We discussed the history of this tradition and its many mystical aspects, including the secrets of breath awareness, the various Gods and Goddesses existing in the body, Kundalini Shakti, and the 118 worlds or realms which make up the known universe of Kashmir Shaivism, knowledge which has been handed down through the oral tradition the the lineage of masters.
And last but not the least, we also look at the various means and methods (upayas) that a seeker can use to realize the truth of their own reality.  So before you return/immerse yourself in . . . to this episode, I would like to request that you 'like this video' and subscribe to this channel. Also, let us know how you feel in the comments, or leave us a review at iTunes and Spotify.

@@marilaucher9989 Indeed! I've always found Shaivism/Shaktism to be the practical application of non duality and the underlying nature of the macrocosm and microcosm. Traditional Advaita Vedanta and Buddhism negate the entire world and emotions. It seems so superficial and hollow that life doesn't have any meaning and everything is just an illusion. And to say nothing of the 'spiritual backpacking ' movement of neo Advaitins in Thiruvannamalai and Rishikesh from Nov to Feb. If only problems went away by asserting yo oneself that there is no I, there is no birth death, blah blah. Gaslighting and disassociation at its finest! KS truly showed me the beauty that our world is, in every single thing from the atom to cosmos.

I had been asked many times about experiences, so I decided to copy an explanation I wrote elsewhere, so I will paste it here, it may be of help to someone I will start with, my family had no religious affiliations, no concepts of meditation, nothing at all. I had a glimpse when I was 11, this lasted about 10 minutes. When I was a kid I used to do things like stare at a wall and notice the weird thing that happens, this I now know is a Zen meditation practice, so perhaps in my previous life I was Zen buddhist, who knows. Another thing I used to do was repeating a word, any word, I actually remember one time I repeated the word 'cupboard', and weird thing happened, I think this is what I was doing to cause the oneness when I was 11. This again is just what many meditators do, they recite a mantra, the word used is of no consequence, although for some people a word they have strong feeling of devotion toward would help them simply because devotion helps focus. The glimpse when I was 11, was a shift in perception that I was everything, I still remember the exact idea that came to me in that state, "I am all there is". This was not while being seated and closed eyes as people tend to think is required, I was walking about the house, looking around being totally astonished. This influenced the rest of my life, not by way of remembering the experience caused me to be mindful of situations, it actually changes how you think. I could never compete with anybody after that, I could never aim for promotion, I couldn't do anything that was egocentric, I would never get angry with anybody, cars cutting me off in traffic would mean to me that that person has some stress and so they are in a hurry, or thoughts to that effect, resulting in compassion for that driver or whoever and whatever the situation. Then life happens, and at the age of 49 I am walking to my office from the train station. As I am walking I have an urge to create a feeling of unconditional love, I am maintaining this feeling, I am aware that effort is required because I almost stopped it, but I stayed with it, I then create a feeling of expanding beyond the body, then boom, I am not the body, I am all there is, including the space. As the body is walking I observed the arms swinging, they appear to be like any other inanimate object you may observe, like branches on a tree. I noticed that as the body was walking, I remained motionless, this is obvious because if you are everything including the space then where can you move from and to, so I suppose this is termed as omnipresent. Another observation was that seeing was happening from a higher position than the eyes of the body, and it was different from seeing through the eyes, the vibrance. This experience remained for about 3 hours. I was working at a charity as a software engineer, and I was designing a solution that the business needed urgently and I was the only one who could do it. I had a meeting to prepare for, and I observed that my mind had literally stopped, I just couldn't think in the way I was used to. You see, the thinking we tend to do is about control, and control is egocentric, and when you are in the state of Oneness, then who are you going to be egocentric with, so that part of the mind stops, and you just know. But this just knowing didn't cut it for me, my ego came back, I remember very clearly, trying to get my mind moving again, and it literally felt like a big heavy wheel and I was trying to push it, and then once it started it picked up momentum, and then over the next 12 months the ego that I didn't have much of from 11 to 49 came and hit me big time, I was competing with everybody I came into contact with, I was pushing senior managers challenging them, I mean directors and chiefs. I went right over the cliff. This then culminated in severe frequent panic attack, constant anxiety and incredible tension, even electric shocks and brain zaps. Everything I have gone through, was necessary for me, everything anybody goes through is necessary for them, even though we don't understand it until we have had the breakthrough. After the breakthrough understanding comes, although you may say, if understanding comes after the breakthrough then why did mine go crazy after, well it is just different for everybody, the understanding did come to me immediately after, and more flowed over time, but my ego still had energy and that energy needs to be neutralized, so how do you put out a very big hot fire, let if burn itself out is usually the safest method. So when I started to observe the mind and worked on understanding at the ego level I am calming now, still not great but because I understand what is happening I am fine with it, and just let it burn. I went on a 9 day goenka retreat in early 2018, the second and third day I experienced extreme terror, the teachers asked me to go and see them, I didn't tell them about the stuff I told you, but they were digging for information, because they sensed something I suppose, I was having lots of tingling all over, and the feeling of insects crawling over my face, the two teachers looked at each other agreed with each other looked back at me and one said words to the effect of, "awakening" . You see, every time during this retreat from the second day that I closed my eyes, the terror type experience would start again, so the teacher told me not to meditate as they have taught, but to slow down the effect, I should perhaps meditate on more gross sensations like rub my hands together etc. I suppose my mind was just blazing because of the event that kicked off the major change in 2014. I learnt something very important on the retreat, and that was that as our mind slows, the rubbish comes to the surface, and with my experience of my mind stopping and the feeling of it being like a big heavy wheel, this all came to me to see that the mind is like a vortex, or a whirlpool and as rubbish is collected in a fast moving whirlpool, as the whirlpool slows it releases stuff too, and eventually when the whirlpool stops completely then everything is gone. So my advice, is be aware of yourself, and do not attempt to be in control of anything, control is ego and the more we try to 'do' the stronger the ego. I should add when I say "don't be in control of anything" it's really about expectations, so if you are at work and are responsible for a $10M project, you will likely attach to 'I am important', 'I am responsible for $10M', 'Everyone should listen to me', instead of all of this, know that everything is predetermined, remember my body was walking all by itself, I wasn't there, the body got to work and was working until the ego stepped in. So know that everything is predetermined, your body does stuff and your ego claims ownership, so simply drop any claims to ownership. Do not attach in anyway to results, reward etc. I am happy to answer any question

That was amazing to read! I have not experienced what you have in that depth but I can relate in bits and pieces. I have recently felt something change in me which happened at the heart level. There are two instances I remember which felt extremely weird and I didnt know what was happening and if people around me could see that. 1. I was getting into the subway going to work in the morning and suddenly in that moment as I was taking the step to walk in, everything slowed down as if moving at 0.25x speed. I look around to the people and all I can sense is unaware still bodies with sentience hidden inside. basically people unaware and living zombies. that lasted a few seconds and then I felt like freaking out and suddenly zapped out of it. 2. I was at work and suddenly while walking in the corridor, I feel this expanding energy from the center of my heart going outward. the energy was transparent but looking at it it appears like creating rippling the empty space. I started freaking out again because I am at work I want to be be professional and so again I zap out of it and the experience stops. its been very interesting to say the least. I think My heart chakra has opened and something has changed inside me. I also feel non stop sensations in my third eye and thats been happening for sometime now. Have you experienced any sensation at particular chakras?

@@anki3336 Hi there, you have had some great experiences, they start small, like all lessons in life, we can't tackle the big stuff until we are ready, this is why some people have such bad psychedelic experiences because they have pushed themselves into the deep end with no preparation. Just so you know, I have never tried drugs. To answer your question, yes, since 2016 I have had constant sensations in the forehead, mostly a fluttery feeling, quite weird, but sometimes a more pronounced pressure but not so often. Also lots of vibrations mostly head shoulders upper body and arms. If you don't mind me offering this, I suggest you make a daily practice of creating a feeling of absolute unconditional love, and just hold this feeling as often and as long as you can. My reason is twofold, this was exactly what I was doing when I had the major experience while walking to work, and the second reason is, I learnt that our true core is absolute unconditional love, the issue is we have collected many experiences, ideas, concepts, likes and dislikes and all of these elements make up the veil which filters the truth so that we end up seeing, experiencing according to the filtered perception which reflects our collection of issues. Yes this veil is the ego. So by creating the feeling of your true core, the other elements can weaken, and when weakened sufficiently you will experience the absorption into the One, this absorption in sanskrit is called samadhi. There are different levels of samadhi, the one I "experienced" was nirvikalpa. You can do the practice I mentioned very easily, although it may take some effort initially, but persist and you will know what I am talking about, especially with the experiences you have already had. So do the practice whenever you can, while going for a walk, doing the gardening, housework, shopping, even while watching tv sometimes. I will add, I don't know how interested you are in chakras, but since I have experienced that I am definitely not the body, and knowing that chakras are in the body, I don't put value on chakras insofar as, if we focus on our true nature then we can bypass all of the subgroups and find we are that primary source already

@@bronsonstone725 Thank you for the suggestion! I resonate with it a lot and am going to bring it into practice. I don't follow any one philosophy or concepts like chakras but like learning about it trying to understand what I am looking for. For some background, I went through a tough time on a spiritual/existential level in the last few years and towards the end of it is when I felt this heart opening. This from what I understand could be called as dark night of the soul. Everything changed since that heart opening experience. What you said about unconditional love, I feel like I had a glimpse of it in the beginning and now I feel lighter version of it here and there. Meditating on it sounds like what I need and should do although I am very bad with sitting in one place for longer periods. haha. Thanks for sharing your beautiful experience and explaining samadhi. Btw I am Indian so I understand the language and what it means. 😊

Actually the Mandukya Upanishad mentions Turiya-but not as a state. The Rishi calls it rather “the Fourth”. A subtle distinction. The Fourth is the underlying, ever shining one Reality-Pure Consciousness. Consciousness is singular. It doesn’t fluctuate or modify like the mind. It is more precise to say that there are three mental states-of waking, dreaming, and sleeping. But not of Awareness-Consciousness. The Fourth is one underlying, non changing Reality. It was Mahesh Yogi who came up with a model he described as 7 States of Consciousness. No doubt he had his reasons. But there’s very little support for this model in the classical system of Vedanta. Consciousness is One. All there is is Consciousness. The idea of higher states of consciousness appeals to the Western ego that thinks in terms of personal achievement. Knowledge erases the person entirely from the equation.

In Hinduism, Purusha and Prakriti are the two fundamental concepts that represent the male and female principles of creation, respectively. Similarly, Shiva and Shakti are two deities that represent the cosmic principles of masculine and feminine energy. Here are some similarities between these concepts: Complementary forces: Purusha and Prakriti, as well as Shiva and Shakti, are complementary forces that work together to create and sustain the universe. Purusha represents the unchanging, pure consciousness, while Prakriti represents the creative energy that gives form to the universe. Similarly, Shiva represents the transcendent, unchanging aspect of reality, while Shakti represents the immanent, dynamic aspect. Interdependence: Purusha cannot create without Prakriti, and vice versa. Similarly, Shiva cannot create without Shakti, and vice versa. The two principles are interdependent and work in tandem to create the universe. Unity: Although Purusha and Prakriti, as well as Shiva and Shakti, are two distinct principles, they are ultimately unified. Purusha and Prakriti are seen as two aspects of the same reality, while Shiva and Shakti are seen as two aspects of the same deity. Transformation: Both sets of principles are involved in the process of transformation. Prakriti transforms the unmanifest into the manifest world, while Shakti transforms potential energy into kinetic energy. Similarly, Purusha transforms the individual consciousness into the universal consciousness, while Shiva transforms the individual soul into the cosmic soul. Symbolism: Both sets of principles are represented by symbolic imagery. Purusha is often depicted as a male figure with no attributes, while Prakriti is depicted as a female figure with various attributes. Similarly, Shiva is often depicted as a masculine figure with a third eye and a trident, while Shakti is depicted as a feminine figure with multiple arms and a variety of weapons and tools. Overall, the similarities between Purusha and Prakriti and Shiva and Shakti suggest a deep connection between the masculine and feminine principles of creation in Hinduism.

@KenanAzam

I have little if any knowledge of this, but I suppose the supreme reality's loneliness is different from human loneliness. In the Sufi traditions there is a saying affiliated to God, 'I was a hidden treasure and I longed (loved) to be known so I created the Cosmos'. So perhaps this longing has a taste of love, but what do I know.

I recently have come across a book titled Pratyabijñāhṛdayam. It's pretty accurate. And I think it's pretty accessible for any religious background. The book uses the word mystery. But you can replace it with Allah, God, Shiva or even Self according to what you feel most comfortable with. It does however not answer why the unlimited is limited in life. For that you need to turn to either Genesis 2:18. Or maybe the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad which speaks of cosmic loneliness as being the trigger of origins. Which means the meaning of life is simply love. Jesus realizes this. Countless others too.

Dear Costin, that was not implied. There are many lineages hidden and obvious ones indeed always!
