Football (soccer) is the biggest sport in the entire country and rugby comes second, however our Rugby is at a very high level than soccer in terms of professionalism and accolades. The world knows us as a Rugby nation because we are world champions, however, on a local level soccer is in our culture, we use any round thing to play soccer, from tennis balls, oranges to a ball made of plastic bags etc, its just part of every Kasi street(Hood). On a casual day you will see kids and adults on the streets blocking cars just so they could play soccer using two brick on either side as goal posts, even the elderly come out and watch the showboating, some professional players in the higher leagues were picked from some of those unconventional soccer tournaments. On the other hand Rugby is predominantly in rich and wealthy areas, specifically former model C schools inherited from the Apartheid era, some would even argue that Nelson Mandela mostly helped integrate black people into Rugby in 94, thus we are now such a Rugby loving nation as a whole, it is part of our mission in nation building. Though there are some critics about it but we enjoy it regardless. I stand to be corrected also, otherwise that's my summary.

Football(soccer) is the equivalent of NBA considering the context. I mean us black folks who just so happen to be majority, it's the biggest by far and not just in SA, but the whole entire continent if not 3rd world to be frank. It's a working class sports basically plus it always has mad political inclination too if you factor in the history. Our best players who weren't allowed to play international football during the 80s were son of the best in the world hence some ended up leaving our shores and having stints in the MLS and other leagues abroad playing alongside the likes of Pele at New York Cosmos in the 70s as a matter of fact. Had we not been sanctioned to play international sport you'd probably know of what I'm talking about. Look it up you'll find some videos of what I speak of

Dawg the problem with our football is at our senior level otherwise our Juniors they will give our taste of football as for our Juniors sometimes they take world championships even Brazilians know our football style is similar back in the days our Juniors under23's used beat Brazilians but now our football federation do not believe in our local coaches they take overseas coach and that's were problems begins..... and even now the seniors are not committed as before they living the lifestyle party , drink......they are lavish but if you want to see our football its on Juniors I mean authentic South African style.......
