John, these pictures are absolutely awesome. And holding a camera, a flash ….. and a dog??!!?? This is amazing. -- Also, you mentioned some flash training, I am eagerly waiting for this.

Some great shots, your daughter is gorgeous (I'm old enough to be grandad, so just an observation!) and the dog is the star of the show, naturally. Thanks for sharing, & Happy New Year to all of you.

Thank you for an early 2025 post. Your images are always impressive and it amazes me what you can get out of a single flash. I'm used to using multiple lights and complicated combinations/settings and every time I look at your single flash work, it makes me rethink everything. BTW, your daughter is charming and a great subject for this post.

I'm glad you liked it. She makes it easy. Give the single light a try. I use multiple flash setups all the time but I do love this setup the best

John, I’ve watched your videos for quite some time now. Your laid back vibe is easy to roll with. Also, I’m from Jersey (Salem), so I’m prone to rooting for the home team. I’m a Leica user. M analog and digital, SL2-S, Q2 M, Q3 43. When I watched the results you captured using a handheld, off camera flash, I was blown away. Beautiful images. And I thought, I’ll get a 35 Summicron L mount for my SL2-S and team that with the SF 60 and my SF C1 - the gear that I’ve never used and see what magic I can make. Up to now I use M glass on my SL2-S. Then I remembered that I already own two auto focus Q bodies. I want to thank you for giving me another reason to get pumped about shooting. I’m a veteran and retired Navy chaplain. Still DoD employed and working in Japan. Please keep doing what you’re doing here on KZbin. I find you *Interesting. *Informative. And *Insightful. Happy 2025! May GOD grant to you and yours continued happiness and success throughout this new year and beyond. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps

I have a special place in my heart for the Navy Chaplains - I’ll leave it there. That will be a great pocket setup with the 60 flash. I think you will love it. Just practice and get familiar with the gear.

Always enjoy your content, you make it entertaining and informative! Nice seeing you getting outside and away from the studio for this shoot. I was so expecting to see some harsh flash photos but you taught me a new trick with this technique, great shots! It's nice not having to tote a softbox and flash to get this look, love seeing flash shots that don't look like flash shots! Great job!!

Smashing. One laid-back dawg. I agree that sometimes it's OK not to compete with the sun. I almost think that backlit look can be overdone sometimes. I speak only as a hobbyist not necessarily for what most may or may not want:)

Very interesting video, just curious if you were to use a mag sphere or Godox dome diffuser on the speedlight for a softer light…. Great video

Great video again. I much prefer the not-obvious-flash look. You, your daughter and your very patient dawg make a great photo trio. As per a previous comment you do look like your lovely daughter but I’d be very hesitant to say she looks like you! I haven’t tried off-camera flash but have had fun with reducing the flash output of my X-100VI. I’m looking forward to your upcoming flash videos. Thanks for everything.

Do you think this’ll work with a 50mm lens as well? Maybe a 50 will put me too far from the subject for the small flash to be effective outside? Guess I’ll have to try to find out…

Thank you! A pleasure as always. Is it possible to summarize in short when to use the diffuser and when not? In this video it was rather hard for me to follow when you had it out and in (and why exactly?). :) Thanks a lot for your great videos and support! I need the Sony 46 as well. :)

I use it when I’m in closer proximity to the subject. It spreads the light and takes the power down a little.
