Thank you Kessi for this video. I've been watching your videos alot. I struggled alot with my newborn to latch but he couldn't so I introduced the bottle feeding with formula on day 4. I almost gave up because my milk supply was also very little.. We're now 2 months and he's latching so we'll despite my milk supply being low but I'm happy he does breastfeed.. Im a few years out from the last time i breast fed. I had to give up after a month of life for my baby due to mental health. Ever since, i have felt such a heartshredding guilt. So, my new plan is just to get back to relactation in order to help deal with that guilt. If im able to relactate, then i plan on looking into donating it, but that is definitely a step further than i need to think about right now.

First of all thanks for this!! This is why I came here. My baby had an emergency heart surgery on the day he was born. Thankfully he is healthy now. I have been pumping milk for 3 months and freezing them. He wasn't allow to drink mother milk . He is 3 months old and used to drink formula from bottle. Tomorrow I will try to breastfeed him for the first time!! Very curious how it will be! I am a highly dedicated person, pumping regularly but I also don't want to drive myself mad.. I am quite excited. Bonding has been quite essential to me even during the pregnancy, so this is the main reason why I want to move my baby from bottle to breast.

Hi Brandie. Thank you so much for being here. I am so happy you are learning :) I hope things went well with your baby's procedure. It can be really hard to breastfeed through a tongue and lip tie. I really hope the procedure helps you and you baby. Don't worry if things initially get harder before they improve after the procedure. This is very typical and things should improve over time. If you have any troubles, working with a lactation and oral specialist team may be very beneficial.

I stopped breastfeeding after moving to the complete opposite side of the country (CA->NH) and our son started meeting everyone and everyone wanted to give him a bottle. But I wasn’t producing enough to fill bags for everyone so we started formula feeding. He still has a great latch but my volume went from pumping anywhere between 5-7 oz a breast to barely getting 2oz out of BOTH breasts. I want a stronger bond with Mr. Baby and a little bit of an excuse to just relax with him between chores. I have disordered eating and a part of me doesn’t want to breast feed because of how poor my own nutrition is and i feel like I’m not giving him everything he needs because of my own short comings and it’s been extremely depressing and stressful because all I want to do it give my baby everything he needs but I can’t take the steps to help myself first.
@KassiReyes
@KassiReyes 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your honest and vulnerable response. I hope from the bottom of my heart that you have the professional help you need for your nutrition and mental health, as is so important for so many parents in the postpartum period. Remember breastfeeding doesn't have to be all or nothing and every little bit of your milk that baby get is so valuable. You can enjoy all the snuggles, skin to skin, breastfeeding and do all the latching you want, and still supplement if necessary based on your supply and nutritional status, there is nothing wrong with that. Maybe if some of the pressure is taken off of the nutritional side of breastfeeding, you will feel less stressed about it and enjoy the down time to bond with your little one. Send a hug your way.

So I want to breastfeed my baby again, I stopped when she was only 2 weeks, because I got an infection on my toe and had to take antibiotics, plus she wasn't gaining weight 😔 I tried to bf her but she was just getting frustrated, she did latch once , she'll be 3 mths and now with the shortage of formula going on I want to bf and not worry about the shortage,in the meantime I'll be pumping and staying hydrated and see if she can't latch on with the nipple shield , hopefully by the time she's 4mth she'll only be drinking breast milk ✨💕 thank you for the video, it really helps seeing someone talking about relactation .

I'm currently relactating after I stopped breastfeeding to have chemo. I'm up to around 250ml per day, pumping 7 times per day. I'm tryingying to get baby to latch again after 3.5 months on the bottle, so going to try the nipple shield. Baby says no a lot though! Fingers crossed.

@KassiReyes 4 жыл бұрын
Wow thank you so much for sharing your brave story. What an incredible journey. I can't wait to hear how it turns out for you. That is amazing that you have gotten back up to 250ml. The nipple shield may be a good tool, you could try backfilling the shield with some breastmilk or formula to motivate baby to keep going. You may find that giving baby half of 3/4 of the typical bottle feed and letting him/her finish the feed at the breast is more successful rather than trying to get a hungry baby to latch. If you haven't already subscribed, I would love to have you as part of this community and hear updates on your journey. I hope you are well and wish you continued success.

Breastfed until my son was 2 months, exclusively pumped until he was 4 months. I was in an AWFUL headspace, dealing with postpartum depression/rage, I needed serious rest. Broke my wrist 1 month ago and had surgery. Been hard to hold and cradle baby and offer her the breast while in a sling and cast. But I was still breast feeding prior to my accident. Had zero energy to pump because I still work full-time. The few times I’ve pumped I can only get 1/2ounce combined from both breast. I know I need to commit. I miss the bond and nutrition aspect. She’s 8 months old and lost interest in the breast some since my accident and has two teeth and wants to bite all the time when offered breast. It’s hard when I have no help and am feeling so discouraged. Praying for all mamas who struggle because it is hard. I know it. Chins up and be the best mama you can be.

@@suvigrace6956 I’ll be honest it was so hard I wanted to give up many times. Lots of prayers were said and lots of tears cried. But now it’s so worth it I could probably breastfeed on the moon at this point. I would basically try to get her to latch at least for a min here or there. Being a first mom I didn’t know a lot of the hungry cues I was trying to get her to latch when she was already hungry she would get fussy so when I realized I would try to latch her before she ate the entire bottle. Or before and in between meals and one days she latched and I just could believe it. The good thing is she did not have any nipple confusion which I was very blessed with and she does still take the bottle occasionally whenever I leave her with a babysitter.

I had to stop BF and I was pumping due to the fact that I was in hospital for 20 days. I had to stop BF at 7 months due to medication i was on. I'm off it now and my baby is nearly 9 months old. My milk never went away completely and I've been getting 30ml from both sides for tge past two days. I will be pumping more often to get my supply back up to the milk cow level I was and then attempt the relatching game. Today, he drank my breastmilk from the bottle as if it was never gone (I was so overjoyed, I cried). We've fortunately kept him on Pigeon bottles with the super small teat holes and practiced paced bottle feeding. I miss that bond so much And I'm sure he does too. Wish me luck 😂 he's got two teeth now.

Wow mama, sounds like you have been through so much. 20 days in the hospital!? That must have been so hard. How amazing that your body continues to produce milk for your baby. 7 months of breastfeeding is amazing and it sounds like you will likely have good results with relactation. You will work through those little teeth, I am sure after 7 months of nursing your baby remembers to cup the nipple with the tongue while nursing versus biting. I was just telling my husband the other day that I need to make a video about nursing and teething. My baby also has two teeth right now. Aren't those little teeth SO cute when they smile? 😊 Keep going, you are amazing!

Great video!! Thank you for sharing with us. I planned on exclusively breastfeeding - and did so for the first month - however, little miss and I have had nothing but back to back issues. Her suck wasn't great due to my nipple size so she couldn't empty them, she caught a cold from my other littles at three weeks, we both got thrush at four weeks - so painful I begged God to take my supply away as it made the pain worse, took pseudoephedrine to drop my supply, got sick again soon after with the flu, I ended up on an antihistamine for hives that randomly appeared and stayed for weeks... I've managed to still breastfeed through the night and maybe 2-3 times during the day. I've always wanted to go back to exclusively feeding, but the formula shortage has me wanting to get the ball rolling asap. Little one is 4 mos old.

This is awesome. If you are latching your son and then pumping 1 oz, you may already have an adequate supply. Regular stimulation and emptying is the best for increasing supply, though people have varying experiences with supplements. If you have doubts, check in with an IBCLC in your area. Thanks for being here :)

My baby returned after 2 weeks but I was exhausted and depressed I was not able to efficiently pump and turned to formula feeding with an ache in my heard. Shes 11 weeks now and Im thinking of trying it again, but i dont know if I should go for it especially with a flat nipple.

I want to give my Pab the milk he really deserves. I want to bond with him closer by breastfeeding. First of all my goal when I was still pregnant is to breastfeed him. But unluckily he doesn't want to latch. I searched for many technique including nipple shields but I got lazy using it because everytime I try breastfeeding him I got issues of him crying so loud.

You weren’t lazy,’you were probably doing the best you could. Having a newborn is HARD and Nipple shields can be so frustrating, even if they work for you. It is all really hard but if giving your baby your milk is your goal, I know you can do it.

I am so sorry. Unfortunately, regular emptying of the breast is the best way to promote and protect your supply. It sounds like you have a very demanding work schedule and going back to work can certainly be really hard on your supply, this is such a struggle for many working moms. Remember, any amounts of human milk, no matter how small, are still beneficial to your baby. My heart goes out to you. Maybe try working with a lactation consultant to see if they can help you come up with a plan that works with your life. Congratulations on your baby!

Awww don’t give up! You are doing all the right things. Getting back to Brest from bottle takes time and patience. Don’t force it and don’t give up. Try giving baby half to 3/4 of their usual volume at a feed from a bottle FIRST and then letting them finish the feeding at the breast, once they are almost full and not hungry/less patient. You’ll still need to pump, but little by little this could get you back to breast only… if that is your goal.

My baby lost a little more than 10% of her weight and was forced to supplement with formula by hospital and paediatrician and she’s 1 month today. I’d like to start weaning her off a formula bottle and breastfeed only. Is that possible? I feel like my supply has gone down so much cause she’s starting to rely or realize the steady flow of a bottle. It’s discouraging.. how do I know if she’s getting enough or if I should be still giving her formula. I live in northern Ontario so a case of formula is $90 where I live. I’d really really hate to have to stop breastfeeding.

Awww mama! That is hard, but it sounds like you have done all the right things. I am glad to hear your baby is still breastfeeding. This first month can be so hard. My baby just turned 1 month on Saturday and honestly we are really struggling too. I will share my journey on here one day. If you are curious on how much milk she gets when she breastfeeds, you could try to do a weighted feeding (weight in same diaper before and after a feeding) at the pediatrician or with a lactation consultant. I recommend working with a lactation consultant who can help you with a plan for pumping to protect your supply and weaning from formula to get you back to exclusive breastfeeding. My heart goes out to you

I had issues with breastfeeding from the start. When my baby would latch, I was bleeding, crying cause it was so painful. Idk why I was so sensitive so it, but it became too stressful. I resorted to pumping and feeding him with a bottle which was way better for the both of us. But I ended up getting that dysphoric milk ejection where you become extremely depressed and have a flood of negative emotions. It was the worst I've ever felt. I switched to formula st 5 weeks, and now I feel so guilty 🥺 especially with the formula shortage going on. Now that I'm back to work, I feel like I can stay on top of pumping regularly now and pray I get my supply back 🙏🙏 good luck to all you mommas out there.

Hi Katherine. Breastfeeding can be so challenging in the beginning, I am sorry you faced those challenges around 3 months. If you mean that your son is now 2.5 years old, you may still consider breastfeeding if it works for you and baby mutually, however at 2.5 years old he does have other nutritional requirements beyond EXCLUSIVE breastfeeding. Work closely with your pediatrician to understand the balance of breastmilk and solid foods that he requires. I wish you the best!

My daughter had a grade 3-4 lip and tongue tie we had lasered off. It made breastfeeding very hard at first and I pumped for 2-3 months but we were able to retrain with the help of a lactation nurse. Now she’s EBF. A good nurse makes the difference and we also did bodywork(so important after a lip/tongue tie release) We feel the bodywork is what made the most difference in her ability to latch.

That must have felt so frustrating to be in the hospital pumping and not seeing much output. I have been breastfeeding my baby from day 1. I was given a lactation tablet on day 2 itself. 3 tablets per day...which tremendously increased my supply , but baby needed only little quantity, my breast used to be always extra full and ultimately to restrict the flow she used to bite the nipple...suck on nipple and never suck hard because milk let down was too high. I got my nipples cracked severely. Moreover she didn't gain proper weight for the 1st month. After 2 weeks i stopped the lactation tablets and she kept on sucking on nipple...not latched properly, after 15 days ....i was fed up with cracks and pain and hence started the tablet again which suddenly boosted the supply. But her weight gain was not much. Went to a pediatrician and he said.. she seemed to get foremilk but not proper amounts of hind milk. I understood it was because of tablets. And stopped it completely. Now working on latching and milk supply without tablets. Pumping is hard for me as it makes nipple cracks worse. She does feed on one side effectively but doesnt stay latched on other side and ultimately one side feels fuller than other.. I am so guilty thinking of she have been sucking on foremilk for one month. 😔 now she is 3 and half months. But my breasts doesnt feel full all time. Only when she wakes up from long nap i feel the fullness. Is that normal. And also she finds hard to latch on to loose breast .give me some suggestions.

I really struggled the first months. My daughter had tongue & 3 lip ties that I didn't get told of until she was 3 months which had an effect on my milk supply. I would make enough but I wanted more. I stopped feeding but would still pump. But I was getting stressed mentally & physically. I did have PPD & even felt depressed during pregnancy. So I think that had a role as well. I got my baby Lazer for the ties & breastfed again. She was doing better. But i stopped because she only wanted to sleep with the breast. She was 5 months by the time I stopped. She's 7 months now. She was also teething so she was fussy which she wanted to be on the breast. I wanted to stop when she had teeth which I guess worked out fine. I still have milk & I don't pump. I got her to suck a little with nipple shield but she doesn't do much. I want to reatch her because I honestly miss breastfeeding 🙃 even though it can be hard. I would feel so connected with her. So I guess I'll see where this goes!

Hi Annie. Thank you for sharing your experience. Mom guilt can be so real, right? But don't let it get to you, we are all doing the best we can with them and tools that we have at the time. The best thing to do with relactation is to set your goals and have a clear reason for why you are restarting. Your goal may not be returning to exclusive breastfeeding, and that's ok. Setting small goals can be encouraging and this way even if you don't get a full supply, you can still find comfort in the bonding and the possible added breastmilk for your baby. But it hasn't been that long since you stopped and you have breastfed 3 other babies, so you are starting from a good place and may have some great success. Good luck on your decision and your journey.

PLEASE HELP ME My is almost 12 weeks. For 4 weeks she could barely suck. I went from 9 pumps to 10-11 pumps a day (and I am still doing it). I make sure 2 of pumps are between 2am-6:30am. I Also drank 2-4 mothers milk tea, 4-8 goat’s rue pills, 2-4 ginger tea, 100-128oz of water (yes I get thirsty and I am not over drinking water) a lot of cuddling and holding (I mean pretty much the whole day except when she's sleeping). She refuses nipple shield even when I tried 4 times with the help of lactation consultant. I recorded everything and still do. I met with 4 different lactation consultant and I was folliwed for 2-3 weeks by one of them. I went from producing 2 oz to producing 12+ oz more than what she consumed. Here is where I need help and where our breastfeeding journey started: At 6 weeks we started our breastfeeding and it went somewhat well for 3 1/2 weeks. What I me She's had tongue and lip tie release and I got super sick within 48hrs. She was bottle fed during those 2 days and then completely rejected the breast. I forced because I didn't know any better which made it worse. During these 3 1/2 weeks I pumped right after each feeding for 5-7 minutes to remove the excess. I did 8 to 11 feedings. But in my opinion, my worst issue is this-> between 3pm-9pm I have slow flow and 1-3 out 4 feedings/pumping I don't produce enough milk or it's slow and the exact amountshe drinks. I tried feeding her within an hr so several days (5+), pumping right afer, not pumping for 2 or 3 feedings, you name it, NOTHING WORKED. We had to give bottles to supplement each of those nursing during the 3 weeks 1/2 of nursing. Often ti mes she refused the breast so was fed only by a bottle. Now she's 12 weeks. Soon (within 2 weeks) I want to restart. QUESTIONS(Please help): 1.How can I overcome this slow flow/low production in the afternoon early evening? 2. Since she doesn't consume what I produce, is it okay to pump right after every feeding for 5-7 minutes? Should I skip during the slow flow/slow producing hrs? 3. How can I nurse without needing to supplement with the bottle? PLEASE HELP ME!

Hi! I am sorry! It can be so tough to start out your feeding journey with these challenges! I know that tongue tie can be especially frustrating and challenging. It sounds like you are doing all the right things to protect your supply. There are a several factors that can affect your supply, such as certain medical conditions, which pump you are using, if baby has start doing some latching. I you aren’t already working with a Lactation consultant near you, that could be a helpful option. If there is no one around you, a virtual visit could also work for you . See www.peopleslactation.com. And remember: even that 6 Oz you are getting is sooo good for your baby!! You are an awesome parent 💜

My baby is 6 weeks old and had latch issues due to a tongue tie which was clipped at 9 days old and also I have flat nipples so had to use a shield. I did triple feeding (when he was even able to latch) and then got to the point where I was mostly pumping 8-10x a day for 30 minutes each. But I was only getting 10-15 oz total and supplemented with 20 oz of formula per day. A few days ago with the help of a lactation consultant, he started latching regularly without the nipple shield (now he does it automatically!) Now I am nursing and topping off with formula but I would like to get to EBF. Do you think it’s possible for me to get to EBF? Any tips? I have been feeling pretty pessimistic as he still needs at least 15 oz of formula day now. But I have loved your videos so far and learned a lot!

Thank you for stopping by. First, let me say congratulations, because it sounds like you have done everything right to get your baby back to the breast and protect your supply in the mean time. Also sounds like you have been working with a great lactation Consultant. If your baby is latching at most feeds now , your supply will probably respond to his needs. Our bodies tend to respond better to our babies than to a pump. Trust that your body will provide and produce what your baby needs. Look at his cues after breastfeeding. If he is not showing hunger cues after breastfeeding, you may not need to supplement at every feed. Work with your lactation consultant to help guide you in how to safely wean back from the supplementation, and try to stay optimistic and trust that your body can do this!

Yes! it is definitely ok for your baby if you attempt to relactate. Try not to feel guilty, we are all just doing the best we can and I am sure you are an awesome mama. If formula feeding is right for your family, that is ok or your baby too! However, you may really enjoy the process of skin to skin and reintroducing your baby to the breast. Best of luck on your journey ❤

My 2 month old had a lip tie that made it hard for her to latch properly. She went from almost 6lbs to under 5lbs and we had serious trouble. My supply has been horrible due to it all. I can’t get more then a teaspoon of milk with a pump but I know she’s getting some since she is swallowing Doesn’t help all the stress I’ve been dealing with, not to mention the complications leading up to her birth. If nothing else, my goal is to be able to always give her some breast milk.

My baby was In The nicu for a month . She was born premature. She was so tiny she couldn’t latch . She’s 4 months and I been giving her formula and it’s been frustrating cuz I have try everything for her to latch but again I won’t push her . But I want to re- lactate and pump so I can give it to her on a bottle

@KassiReyes 3 жыл бұрын
It is certainly possible, it may take a little patience and time to get there. Encouraging bay back to breast will likely need to be more about snuggling ,skin to skin, and exploring. Try not to force anything when it comes to feeding and latching.

I had a galactocele too so they had to do incision. After the incision closed, for some reason, milk built up and made a big lump on the breast. I took antibiotics, didn't work so they had it aspirated after. That's why I ended up EP coz it was just so uncomfortable. Now I just wish I stuck to BF instead. So I'm just wondering if relactating it would be a good thing to do for me or not. Would love to know coz I'm at my wit's end

@@howtosewbags Wow! You have had a really difficult go at this. I am amazing at you perseverance and not surprised you are feeling at your wits end. Since you are still pumping, and you are still producing milk, I don't see and added risk to trying to get your baby back to the breast, you may just need to continue pumping as well at first to make sure you are still emptying the breast regularly as baby is relearning. It is up to you though. Do what feels right and manageable to you.

Pumping in the middle of the night is so hard. Maybe you can make yourself smaller goals... like pumping once overnight...or if you are a person who goes to bed late and gets up early pump right before bed and right when you wake up....if you know it isn't realistic for you to pump overnight. I have some problems can u please help me🥺 1- my breastfeeding wasn’t enough for my baby so from the beginning we started with formula feeding and i could able to pump 1oz per-day to feed the baby with it. Now I am pumping 4-8 times daily and i can see my milk supply have increased but it seems like still it’s not enough for the baby after each breastfeeding he seems not satisfied and starts crying asking for more milk so I have to feed him formula At the meantime after each breastfeeding i am pumping I don’t know when i can meet my baby’s milk needs ? He is 2 months old 2- he is not latching well on my breast from the 1st day till now he has been like that sometimes he is fine for a week, a weeks later he won’t . i have to use the bottle nipple to get his attention to my breast! What might be the reason?

Tatiana, welcome! This is a personal decision, and it can can a lot of time and effort, but if what you are interested in is the bond, I think you will find that it is worth it. Even if you don't get a full supply back, every little bit you give your baby and all the skin to skin and snuggles you do will probably help you and baby feel that special bond. I wish you luck on your journey if you decide to try this out :)

How long will it take to get full milk supply? I am in 9 weeks postpartum. From the day 1 my girl is not latching well and she is not interested at my breasts. I am giving formula for the whole. But from the 3rd week, I have started pumping full time at least 7 times a day. But for the 2 weeks I am doing pumping for 7 to 9 times including frequent pumping sessions. Still I am getting 50 or 60 ml breast milk for the whole day. Really I am feeling guilty. Could you please help me to increase my supply? I have tried fenugreek supplements and some lactation cookies. My doctor haven't prescribed any medications to improve milk supply.

Wow, It sounds like you are doing ALL the right things, I don't think you should feel guilty at all. There are some things that may help improve your supply, like pumping with a hospital grade pump (not sure which pump you currently use). Working one on one with an IBCLC may be in your best interest. Feel free to click the link on our profile to book a virtual visit with us, otherwise I recommend looking for an in person IBCLC near you. Remember, even that 50-60ml that you are working so hard for, is POWERFUL and SO beneficial to your baby. You are amazing.
