Just like with the previous Final Fantasy playthroughs of yours, I couldn't refrain from watching this masterpiece. I first want to thank you so much for bringing it to your channel, because another reason why I wanted to watch the full playthrough of a game I already played myself is because you always bring so much value to the games you play, in particular your deep perspectives. I also wanted to share my past experience with this game. When I was a child, I used to watch my older brother playing it and sometimes even with his friends, who at times would get frustrated for not figuring out how to beat a colossus down ahahaha About a decade after, I got to play it myself on the remastered version on ps3 (not an incredible difference from the original in terms of graphics), but I remember how it helped me relieve some of the pain caused by something I was going through in my life. Of course, beating down those colossi itself was exciting. In my case it was not that hard to figure out the solutions to progress in the game, because I still had had memories of when my brother and his friends figured those things out. Anyway, also all the moments in between, with such calming environment, really brought me a peaceful sensation. I'm so glad that you got to experience all this yourself. Again, you really surprised me by bringing this masterpiece to your channel... I'm wondering which game will surprise me next... :)

Shadow of the Colossus is such an incredible piece of art. There's still nothing quite like it. It's so special. The music is breathtaking, the art is astonishing, the simplicity, the epic journey, the almost no UI, the abscense of quests, characters to talk to, and things to do. It's just you, your horse and the task at hand, nothing else matters. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully you give The Last Guardian (the third game of this unique trilogy of games by Fumito Ueda) a chance some day. It probably won't happen for a while, and even though plenty of people have divisive opinions on it, I truly can't recommend it enough to people. If you've ever had a pet, then it can impact you in such a way that no other video game would, I feel. It's that unique. All I tell people is the #1 thing you need for it is PATIENCE. It does have jank and it's by no means petfect, but it's highs are so high that the experience will stay with you.

Oh just realized they did technically remake the game for the PS4 redoing the assets from scratch and adding a new control scheme. I’m not exactly a huge fan of the newer control scheme though and I dislike some (though not all) of the asset changes they went with. Which meant I played it a bit once on a friend’s system and then promptly forgot about it until right after I wrote the comment. I really should take more time to think before writing comments. Don't be too hard on yourself Kasta, I had to look up how to beat the final two colossi. The story was really beautiful and left me thinking about what the it really meant, and I am not sure I have an answer or solid thoughts on it, not because it was confusing but rather I felt the developers did not want to give you all the answers. This whole time you are fighting something, but you (as the player) never felt sure what you were doing was good or bad. The version I played was absolutely beautiful and I do hope you get a chance to play a more recent version. Thanks Kasta.

You made the game so much harder by trying to find the hidden vitals of many colossi by crawling around them and manually searching for the glowing spot (like, for example, in the 15th colossus fight, where you spend most of the fight looking for the vitals). You were supposed to use your sword's guiding light during the fight, shining it at the colossus, and it would've shown you exactly where the hidden vitals were. Anyway, I loved your playthrough, I really appreciate you playing all these classic games in individual videos about them.

I KNEW you'd love this one! My thoughts/observations: You can climb the save shrines, and in fact need to in order to collect many of the salamander tails. Shooting the final colossus's shoulder is something A LOT of people missed. Even if not, never apologize if you decide to look something up. It's your playthrough. The beach at the end of Ico is in the game, and you ALMOST discovered it before even finding the first colossus. (B5 on the map.) Fumito Ueda is notoriously mum on what everything explicitly means, so there is very little that is canon. The popular theory is that SotC is a prequel to Ico, and my interpretation is that Wander (the playable character; the woman's name is Mono) became the first horned child of those that end up being sacrificed in Ico. This would explain why the horned children are believed to be cursed, and why they return in the Castle as shadow figures. Dormin speaks with a male and female voice, but the female voice is gone after Wander slays the final colossus. My own (probably unpopular) theory is that the female somehow was used to resurrect Mono. Many think female Dormin and/or Mono becomes the Queen in Ico, but I never liked that idea. Also, Agro actually has a diamond between his eyes, but if your memory card has a save file of Ico, it turns into the I from the Ico logo. Lastly, the original concept was for 48 colossi, but it was cut in half when they began the colossi designs and puzzle/battle designs and, due to budget/deadlines, was ultimately cut to 16.
@GameSharc021017 күн бұрын

Dormin kept his word (sorta), and the humans murdered a young girl over a prophecy, so idk who is evil. It was frustrating to watch you second-guess yourself and dismiss trying things initially (e.g. "Do I shoot its legs and make it fall? ...no, that's silly.")-but then you figured some of the trickier colossi so quickly (shooting the sand worm in the eye; making the penultimate one stomp the platform to raise it), which was really impressive. Anyway, thank you for sharing with us your reactions, thoughts, and feelings for this beautiful, transcendent game!
@ChocolatierRob21 күн бұрын
You may have realised this on a later Colossus but the reason why you were having so much trouble shooting the legs of Colossus number 8 (lizard climbing the arena) Is because of another button you were pressing. The L1 button focusses on the Colossus so you can always track its location but it focusses the camera on its centre mass. To freely aim your arrows you need to release L1 so the camera does not drift immediately back to centre mass.

Ok, I finally made it all the way to the end of the video. First of all, congratulations on finishing two of the most beautiful masterpieces of the PS2 games library. 🤩 Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are two unique experiencies that can trully leave a mark on a person for life. It is simply impossible to not fall in love with these games - specially Shadow. And yes, they did leave a mark not only on the players, but on the whole video game industry. SotC was such an technologically advanced game for its time, it's kinda like a miracle how the PS2 can (barely, and struggling to) even run this game. Ico started development for the PlayStation 1, but the game was so demanding on the hardware and had such ambitious goals and scope, that they decided to migrate it to the brand new console. The same ALMOST happened to Shadow. The PS3 would come out about a year or two after the game was finished, but the team had all the knowledge they need about the PS2 and what it could still do, so they decided to "squeeze milk out of that stone" and in the end, the game REALLY pushed the limits of the hardware, with so many brand new 3D tech concepts, like real time physics simulation (like the wind blowing Wander's scarf, or Agro's mane and tail swinging as she gallops, the shockwaves from when the colossi stomp or strike the ground), character rigging and animations with Inverse Kinematics (when you grab onto the colossus and it shakes you off entirely just by moving the position of your hand along the 3D space), adaptive sound design (how the music behaves and changes according to what's going on in the action). All of these are technical concepts that kept being developed even further as the newer generations of games would come up. This game started many of these things. The game has its flaws, of course (all of my gripes with it are about the controls and the camera - ARGH, THE CAMERA! 😫), but none of them come even close to scratch the surface of how magnificent this game is. Ok. Now here's some informations you may not have noticed, or simply wasn't aware or couldn't tell just by what the game shows you: About your charcacter: His name is Wander. Apparently, the girl is called Mono, by the way. But the game NEVER tells us this... WHY?! 🤔; Along with standing up on Agro's back, Wander can also hang to either side on the saddle, by holding R1 + Δ + (← or →). He'll jump off of Agro if you let go of Δ; To mount on Agro, you don't NEED to position yourself precisely on the side (which is really finnicky sometimes). You can jump towards it from either side - and even from diagonals - and hold R1. He'll grab the saddle and get on it. You can even make Agro start moving while Wander is getting on the saddle. No need to wait for him to finish saddling. 😁 About Agro: Agro is actually a female horse (but it's ok that you called her "he" the whole game, she won't get mad about being misgendered 😋); The white mark on her forehead is shaped like the letter "I" from Ico. And it only looks like that because you have a save game from Ico in your Memory Card. If your memory card doesn't have an Ico save in it, her mark is a diamond shape (you can test this later, by booting up the game without the memory card); You don't need to keep tapping X to make her go. Just hold it. Much easier on your finger; And you also don't need to move the analog stick in any direction to make her go forward. I felt like, in the bridge scene, you tought that you had to move the stick to the right to make her go to the right. That's not how it works. If you move the stick to either side, you'll steer her to TURN to that side. In order for her to move forward in a straight line (no matter which direction she's facing), you only need to keep tapping - or holding - X; She can steer herself along these narrow paths and bridges so you don't have to worry about falling off. She might take it slow, though, if the path is too narrow or too winding; She has quite a few cool tricks too. You can make her full stop much faster by pressing ↓ + X at the same time, and you can even make her do a 180° by pressing ↓ + X twice; And my favorite: When fully stopped, you can press the same ↓ + X to make her start a charge-run full speed. Instead of slowly picking up the pace, she rears up and launches full speed. It's awesome! 😍 About fighting the colossi: You were having trouble with the aim because you're pressing L1. The thing is, L1 makes the camera (and thus the aim) snap to the colossus. You don't need to hold L1 to aim. You aim with the ▢, then you press L1 for a moment to make the aim snap to the colossus, but then you let go L1 and keep aiming with ▢; When shooting at a moving target, you should aim ahead of where the target is. Especially if the target is far away. It takes time for the arrow to get to the target, and if you aim at the target, it won't be there anymore by the time the arrow gets there. This applies not only to this game, but for aiming at moving targets in general. Even in real life this applies too. This concept is called "Lead Aiming"; There's a MUCH easier way to reveal their "vitals": You know the power of the sword to focus the sunlight to reveal where you should go to find the Colossus? Once you finally find them, you can use the same power to reveal their weak spots. Just raise the sword to the sunlight, and scan the colossus with the light beam. It will focus on the Vitals and highlight them so you can see them from distance. To be fair, this hint the game DOES tell you. In the first colossus. But you're so overwhelmed by the AWESOMENESS of that encounter, that you completely ignored the hint (it's ok, though, everyone of us had the exact same issue, I guarantee 😅); [edit] Oh! And one more tip: When you're on the colossus' vitals (in the cases where you can STAND on them), there is a way to deal max damage on a fast attack. If you jump and then hold R1 + ▢, Wander will fall holding the sword downwards for a super strong stab - it's so strong that he even struggles a little bit to pull the sword back out - that deals the same damage as a fully charged normal stab, with the advantage of not having to charge the attack. It's as simple and fast as a jump. You can risk this when you feel it's stable after the colossus stops shaking you off. About fun/cool stuff: There were many more Colossi (and their respective locations/environments) intended during development, but they were cut out of the final game. Probabaly due to deadline reasons, or simply the team wasn't getting them to work perfectly as intended. I think the original concept was for FOURTY-SOMETHING Colossi, but then they cut it down to, like, 24... But the final number was "cut short" down to 16; The Save Spot stones are shaped like Memory Cards; 😁 There is a major beach at the Southwest of the map, that kinda resembles the beach from the ending of Ico; It is possible to climb on the outside of the Shrine of Worship and reach the main bridge - and even go back to the very entrance of the land - but it's a TOUGH and LONG quest, and requires the maximum amount of Grip Energy AND a special method/exploit of climbing, plus there's only one specific spot where you can start the climb, and a very specific path you must take to be able to make it up there. You can also get to the garden from the Credits scene up there; While riding Agro, you see these hawks that fly along with you (for some reason, I always thought they were owls... 🤔)? Apparently there is a way to jump and grab onto them, and be carried by them for a short amount of time. Just for funzies; 😋 DEFINITELY do the Time Attack on a second playthrough. You can win cool prizes from them. 🤗 OMG! What a LONG comment this is. 🤣

Team Ico were just so impressive with how they tell a story that can only be done in video games. You get pretty much no dialogue from Wander but you can tell just how desperate he was to bring back a life through his animations struggling with a colossus. He doesn't seem like a particularly strong person either but none of that seems to matter to him. In ICO they managed to give Yorda and Ico personalities despite the lack of dialogue and communication with one another. So much of it was told just through the animation work which was deliberately not motion captured but uses an innovative design. Yorda in particular is very frail and you start feeling bad if you're just yanking her arm when running (as Kasta noted several times). You're encouraged then to be gentle and maybe walk instead of running with her even though there's no actual gameplay benefit. And if you leave Yorda alone and give her some peace you might notice she is captivated by the birds seen around the castle (a reflection of her desire to be free). SPOILERS for SotC and The Last of Us SotC was also a game that really popularized the metanarrative of "you're doing a bad thing but it's a video game to you" and in a way the game punishes you in that last scene where you get your controls back and can struggle all you want to reach Mono (the girl) but you've already doomed yourself. You see this in other games like Hotline Miami, Undertale and TLoU but SotC is a lot more subtle about it haha. Worth noting ICO is Neil Druckmann's favourite game so there's probably a bunch of other connections you can make

Some things to mention in case you missed it (cause admittedly I only watched my favorite colossus fights + ending and thoughts) - the main character's name is wander, his name was said by the girl a few times when you were getting the portal looking loading screen - When the priest (lord emon) said that "one day you can make atonement for your sins" this line ecos to the story of ico where ico (the descendant of wander, cause horns) makes his atonement by defeating the queen - In the story of shadow of the colossus, you always heard dormin with a male and female voice mixed within it, but when the final conlusion of the story happens, dormin's voice shows no sign of the female voice being present, meaning in my and many other people's interpretation, part of dormin escaped and the queen in ico is the last piece of dormin. - In shadow of the colossus there is a part of the land that you can travel to and see the same beach ico walks on the find the girl in the last segment of ico. In the remaster the team put watermelons on the beach which is an easter egg to a new game + ending in ico. - In the desert near the 13th colossus there is a ringlike structure sticking out of the ground that resembles the rings you see when you are trying to open the doors of the castle in ico, further hinting at the relation between the two games. - if you beat the game 3 times (normal playthrough plus 2 new game + playthroughs) you can climb to the garden that the girl and argo end up staying at the end of the game as well as walk across the bridge to the entrance of the sacred land. I am so glad you enjoyed and experienced this game the way I and many others had back in the day. If you have any more questions/discussions you wish to ask/talk about, feel free!

Just to add, The girl you save could also eventually be the witch in Ico as she could have remnants of Dormin like Wanderer, and is slowly corrupted to eventually be the witch. BUUT another theory is reason for her sacrifice in the beginning of this game could be the villages fear of the witch returning in some capacity (like the horns on boys being sacrificed to what we learn being bits of Dormin). The reasoning for the witch wanting the horned boys is so she could be "one" again as full Dormin. Though none of this explains how she had a daughter in Ico. These games are great because its essentially all theories.

@MrEricReis I really dig this interpretation! It goes to show how well these games are crafted to have so many different ways people interpret the story

Ueda says none of the games are connected.
@naysgameopinions20 күн бұрын
@LovelessDogg1 the last guardian artbook hints at a connection I think. I forget, I'll have to look at it again. I think it mentions the pools of water are somewhat connected or can be looked at as a mirror and the games are reflecting each other. Sort of like "it's poetry, it rhymes", but I think it's mostly left to interpretation. Connecting them is a lot more fun though. Especially since they are made by the same team, have similar artsyles, designs, and world, and all have similar playstyles, themes, and features. Makes more sense for them to be connected then not be.
@LovelessDogg120 күн бұрын
@ the art books aren’t made by the people that made the game. They’re made by a third party. They don’t have jurisdiction on what the creator himself has stated regarding his own games. He’s gone on record stating they aren’t connected. That they share common themes and designs philosophies but have no real ties outside of that. Now, He isn’t against fans having their own head canons, in fact he welcomes it. But what people here are pushing is that they are all confirmed to be canonically tied to one another, despite what the man himself has stated.

The 3rd Colossus with the brittle armor, what you needed to do was have him hit the circular stone platform in the middle of the arena to break his armor. You eventually got there by accident.

I originally watched my brother play it since he owned it. I bought the ps4 version since I never owned the original and I thought it was just your typical update to play on a new system, but they full on re did everything and its even more gorgeous.

3:35:03 The armor crumbled, not because of multiple blows. The armor crumbled because his weapon hit not the soft ground (in which it gets stuck a little) but the hard stone round platform in the middle of the arena (you did it by accident, like many of us the first time) But in general, there are always several extreme alternative ways to climb the colossus. In this sense, there is flexibility in solving this problem.

Sorry I'm late to commenting on this beautiful walkthrough!! Many thanks to covering my favorite game of all time! It's not only a game but a work of art. The music. The storytelling. Just like your Ico walkthrough. This was a very well thought out walkthrough. Love that you include the manuals in every video. It shows true respect to the game ☺️ Maggie as a huge fan ❤ I love how you're covering some of the most important games that came to be throughout our time Thank you for bringing back the memories 🙏🏽

Side note: At the end of your video, you left the file save screen running to log the completed game save for hard or speed run modes … Had you gone back to the title screen - it switches to an idling mode, where the camera flies around following the friendly eagle around part of the landscape with beautiful soundtrack music. Then goes back to the title screen, after a while the game will go back to an idling flight around another part of the landscape ! Furthermore, the same will happen with the in-game menu screen following a riderless Agro roaming freely around the landscape. Would have these on when I needed some chill time or to eat between gaming sessions.

One of those games I loved, but didn't end up able to finish at the time. Even so, the music still rings in my ears sometimes, especially that cutscene that leads into the main menu. This game, was a sacred experience for so many. Thank you for treating with that same gravity.

Don't feel too bad about looking up the vitals on the second to last one, you forgot somewhere along the way that holding up the sword with circle shows not just the way to the collossi, but it points directly at the vitals, considering you didn't that feature you dealt with it being harder without even knowing. Loved the playthrough, the struggle is fun to watch, we're not here for perfect playthoughs, we're here to watch you experience these blind, which is a lot more interesting than someone blazing through the game, i usually blast through it, but seeing some of your reactions to scaling on the sand worm or jumping on the bird collossus for the first time and the music kicking in were very similar to mine, i can't remember many times where i nearly cried cause of how awesome something was, but this game definitely had those moments, lol. And i'm so pround of the little PS2 pulling this game off, it just barely gets away with it, i don't even care that it runs at sub 20 fps most of the time, i always like to image i'm struggling along with the PS2.. and with Wander's fingernails 😆
@HKT-430021 күн бұрын
Also i'd definitely recommend stepping away for half a day or a good night's rest like halfway through, i've also been in moments of wanting to get through to the end no matter what, and that's when you start missing stuff, dying a bunch and getting frustrated, usually when i come back, i do whatever i was struggling with on the first try, stuff just starts going over your head at some point towards the end of a 13 hour play session, you become hyper fixated on something that's in the way of both enjoyment and the actual way to progress. I definitely get looking it up at that point though, but i guarantee you would not have needed to had you taken the game in 2 sessions instead of 1, so please don't push yourself too hard Kasta, if it gets a little crowded on the calender 10 games of christmas is okay too!

The year is 2005…. I had read about this game in the Official PlayStation Magazine. Then an issue was published with a demo disc on the cover (yes, I am along with this game - that old!) there was also a discount token for Virgin Megastore. I sat through the introduction, I played the demo which was the first colossus. Over and over again, obsessively, totally hooked on that alone. Until the release date, when I rushed down to said store for day one purchase. Then played it countless times on PS2. There was nothing else around like it, in both artistic presentation, storytelling and emotional impact. Then I continued replaying SotC with the remastered Ico collection with Ico on PS3 and the latest remake on PS4. I have replayed this game so many times, it must be in the high double figures heading for a three figure sum! In the hopeless quest to recapture that first experience of the wonder and awe that is - Shadow of the Colossus!
@LukaelPlays18 күн бұрын
I'm sure someone else must have pointed it out in the comments already, but usually the little white spot on Aggro's head is a rhombus, but for you it was the "i" from Ico because you had an Ico savefile on your memory card! it's a neat little easter egg c:

The remaster of this game that came out a few years ago is a million percent worth a playthrough, and one of the few times I actually prefer the newer version over the old. It's the exact same game but upscaled with incredible graphics. Genuinely one of the most beautiful games I've ever played. Edit: I said the remaster - what I meant was the PS4 remake. Thanks for the correction.

@@jtdarelli2362 Strongly disagree, personally I think the remake completely ruins the atmosphere and art style of the game.
@jtdarelli236221 күн бұрын
@alligator4117 That's so weird. How so? The games are pretty much identical. In fact I'm pretty sure they sourced the audio directly from the ps2 version. The only difference is graphic quality.
@alligator411721 күн бұрын
@@jtdarelli2362 I feel like visually they lost all of the atmosphere in the remake. It just doesn't feel so mysterious and magical like in the original. I also don't like the subtle redesigns to some of the colossi and to Wander and the girl. Also Wander's model often looks super stiff and weird during gameplay.

in Dormins defense, i dont think he was evil. maybe just mortals perceive him that way because he can control light (souls) and such acts are "vile" to the laws of mortals (just like kids with horns must be sacrificed is also a law of mortals) dormin did come through in the end and he gave wanderer warning that it would be a heavy toll. even now we dont know what dormin is. great lore for a game. imagine being in dormin shoes, just existing means you gotta be destroyed because of your power, kinda like the kids with horns
