Excellent form and body mechanics. Truly worthy of notice.

Some schools of matayoshi will practice a more backward movement however you will find that with an aggressive opponent during the bunkai too much of a backward movement is more of a hindrance than a help so the focus is on returning to counter immediately

when was this taken and how long ago? I forgot parts of my kata and recognized the "Samurai" in the background. That is the same Samurai I looked at for 13 years of my time training at Tri-star karate
@DanielPyatt5 жыл бұрын
This was filmed quite a few years back now but your right the Samurai in the back is a commercially available model so there are many like it. Its not a custom antique. In fact I've seen it used on TV and film in wide shots.

excellent, nothing to say. Is the yammei position supposed to be 2 yards ahead of the yoi?
@monstahhh1211 жыл бұрын
wow that was an awesome kata. just when you clear the bo are you supposed to jump back?
@WelginSilva10 жыл бұрын
Beautiful Kata......Is that a special bo? it makes a snap sound on every stoke sounds like you are hitting someone.....
@DanielPyatt9 жыл бұрын
Coqui Factory No, no special Bo just kime
@CatGaines6 жыл бұрын
That's not kime. You're hitting yourself with the bo.
@pauloburnay54345 жыл бұрын
@@CatGaines Indeed. The sound comes from hitting the arm (covered by the GI) at the rear. With a naked torso (no GI), only a muffled sound will be heard.

but the kata is entirely different from what I was taught
@DanielPyatt5 жыл бұрын
Did you learn the Matayoshi lineage? The Taira Lineage Choun no Kon is totally, utterly and completely different in fact the only thing they actually have in common is they have the same name. Both are beautiful and rich katas.

@@DanielPyatt I was taught Okinawan Ryukyu Hon Kenpo Kobujyutsu which was from master Seikichi Odo. It is similar with certain moves, but not all, and the pacing and Kiai is different We pronounced "ie" for strikes and "ei" for takedowns. But it definetly jogged my memory again and was able to help me start practicing again. Thank you.

@@DanielPyatt It took me a little while to find it, but I finally did. Here's the link to the kata, and even though I never met Grand Master Odo, I learned the kata from his disciples. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKvOlqd9hMmSjdk

Kiai is a Japanese thing which was used in all of Japanese martial arts like Kendo etc. Funaskoshi introduced it to his Karate to be more acceptable to the Japanese. It was not used in Okinawa until introduction by Funaskoshi.
