Of course he's allowed to do that kata. The kata was executed very well. Power, kimé,zanchin...a good kata.

Yes. I too think this is Eric Higaonna Sensei, son of Higaonna Morio Sensei.

WOAH WHAT VERSION OF SEISAN IS THIS!! OMG he WAS ALLOWED TO DO THAT KATA AS A BLACK BELT!? I was told we couldn't use that in a traditional tournament after we promoted past purple!

He's Ryoke Abe, former kata world champion.

Very nice.

In Okinawan Goju-ryu Seisan happens to be considered a really difficult kata second only to suparinpei. In IOGKF only 3 Dan and above are expected to do this kata properly.

there are a lot of different versions of this kata, as with all kata; some katas don't even exist in some styles of karate for whatever reason, it's usually not taken from that karate's base-style if it isn't included or studied. I'm currently learning this kata for my 3rd deg. grading.

The difference between real life and movies isn't that karate doesn't work. The difference is that it doesn't look pretty. I'm sure most people would agree with me on that one.

thats right if you know karate yourself you can see the meaning of these technics. he preformed an amezing kata.

I do a style called Seiekan but we do alot of kata's from Goju-ryu and Shotokan.. In any case though I have never ever seen this version of seisan...I would love to do this in competition.

No, this is not Higaonna Sensei. This person is good, but his kata is more sporty, where Higaonna Senseis' kata is more traditional.

@yuggsoth It does, there is a Naha, or Goju Seisan and a Shuri, or Shorin Seisan. There are similarities, but lots of differences as well.

Superb performance! I wonder why Seisan has only right-leg kicks, though? Sanseiryu is the same. This asymmetry is something I've never understood. Anybody know?

I think somebody with a couple decades of experience in karate would destroy somebody who just boxes and wrestles, let alone somebody who started only 6 months ago. Besides, I'm not taking karate because I think I'm going to be some sparring champion. The cool stuff to learn is the stuff you never use in a match - the things they don't teach just anybody. With that stuff, I don't care if you're fighting Muhammed Ali, he's going down. Hard.

That's extremely different from the seisan kata I'm learning... I'm guessing there are different versions? Not to say he didn't do well (although I'm not experienced enough to judge anyway). He just confused me...

Looks more like a Sanchin kata?

Do yourself a favor and drop out of your karate class. Take some boxing and wrestling and in 6 months you will be able to wipe the floor with your karate teacher!
