Hence the reason why we learn both dojo and shitei versions of the kata. Also... instructors need to teach BOTH versions and explain when and how they apply.

@prawn1111 I feel the same way now, especially when I see today's Shotokan kata practiced by European champions in WKF. As far as Goju, I think Morio Higaonna's way is the right way. No flowery, overemphasized drama attached.

Yeesh.. I'd hate to be the judge trying to find fault with that kata. Would be very humbling... How's the speed of his front kick at 1:13 or the double kick (front and side) at 1:04. Amazing stuff!!

Actually, he seems to drop his hands in every punch. And his kicks look like they could maybe break through a paper door.

Great performance. For those who say his kick wouldn't cause any damage, or that his center is somewhere it shouldn't be, easy to say from behind a keyboard. Put your knee in midrange of that kansetu geri, and i think you' d be walking differently for the rest of your life. And if you can do it better -very few can- upload your better version of you doing it.

Abe is a superb martial artist. Your critiques clearly demonstrate a lack of knowledge as to the specific kata and the essence of bunkai. His kensetsu geri would easily take out your knee. He displays excellent kime, superb stances, and outstanding speed.

@bobotski61804 You're right that I don't know what meaning Abe assigns to his movements. Regulation-style competitions of regulation kata is becoming what karate is about for some. We all have our heroes and plenty have criticized mine. Healthy food for thought, I say. In my opinion, Shite kata place more of an emphasis on aesthetics than anything else. My fear is that, in time, Shite will supplant traditional kata as part of Japan's attempt to vanilla-ize karate. Just not interesting to me.

Shitei versions of these forms, specifically for tournaments (and this is a good example) are sadly eroding the original meaning of kata...in my opinion. I'm glad there are still traditionalists preserving what they were originally taught, to the best of their ability. His sokuto/kensetsu keri is done with the supporting leg sideways and his center of balance is high as he kicks. While he's quite fast, he sacrifices technique as a result. Sanchin stance is too large. Pretty but meaningless.
