katatonia is such an amazing band, nobody does it like them. The gothic/doom atmosphere mixed with the progressive song structures and hauntingly beautiful vocals, man.

Night Is The New Day is my favorite Katatonia album, but all of their stuff is top notch (I actually love their first couple of death-metal albums as well). The Fall Of Hearts is a fantastic album, but it's a workout to listen to cause they get so complex with their structures on it. They've always had a penchant for interesting timings and changing up their keys or timings mid-song, but in Fall Of Hearts they seemingly made it their mission to write insanely complex stuff for nearly every track. One of the more interesting things about the band is how they've changed up a number of musicians over the years and how each new lineup alters the sound and style without really undermining the overall tone of the music. You can listen to this album and then go back to Tonight's Decision and listen to it and while it sounds very different, it's still very much Katatonia. There's a seed of something in all of their albums. I think their earliest stuff is the only stuff that's not "Katatonia" sounding, but even on those albums there's a couple of tracks where you're like "Oh, there it is..."

Love, love, love Katatonia for so many years now. This album was such a huge release for me. I do feel like the second half is better, and I would probably have chosen The Night Subscriber from this album. Whatever. They might be a bit of an acquired taste, or some people might think they try too hard. Like you said, there's so much going on. Well, I applaud their bravery, and how they don't choose the easy way out in their song writing. You can't get too much Katatonia!

Thank you so much Geebz for fitting this one in, I requested it a bit ago on Patreon. One of my favorite bands, and this track is such a killer opening to an amazing album. Katatonia pulls so much emotion into the progressive genre that few can match. I love hearing your take and I've heard Takover probably 300 times but have never picked up on the subtle "pad" sounds in the background before.

I have listened to soooo much Katatonia over the years, and no other album of theirs hits me as much as this one. The complexities of this album come off so organically and I feel like they composed with such freedom after shaking up the band lineup. Great lead track off a personal favorite album. My favorite Stockholmers along with Opeth. These guys have a sound that just totally speaks to my Swedish side and the *vemod* (a word for melancholy, roughly) I sometimes can feel.

Thanks for the breakdown. Katatonia is one of my all-time favorite bands. I got into them around the time of The Great Cold Distance and Night Is The New Day. This album, and the latest one, were a bit challenging as their style progressed, but after a few listens it clicked and I “got” it. I’d be curious to hear your reaction to a track by Long Distance Calling called The Nearing Grave where the Katatonia vocalist does a guest appearance.
@YuryVVV2 жыл бұрын
Yup, but that's what happens when your band is joined by musicians who can offer so much more than the old members could that it would be unfair to them to not put that potential to use. Daniel Moilanen and Roger Öjersson were amazing additions and I'll forever be grateful to them for helping write my favorite album of all times.

Katatonia actually started as a death doom and gothic metal band, inspired by those two genres pioneers Paradise Lost. They evolved their sound and style quite quickly on their early albums. They found their trademark sound with the album Viva Emptiness and further developed afterwards. Many hold Night is the New Day as their best work to date, but I personally think the album before, The Great Cold Distance, remains their magnum opus really.

Oh heck yes! Been waiting for more Katatonia There's so many songs to suggest from them, I'd suggest "The one you're looking for isn't here" from Dethroned and Uncrowned, a acoustic reimagining of the song of the same name from Dead End Kings, absolutely shows how versatile they are as musicians.

Yeees, some more Katatonia and one of their more intricate songs on the table. The Fall Of Hearts as a whole (in my opinion, of course) is their best work musicianship-wise, in no small part thank to two new members who joined the band - the drummer Daniel Moilanen and the lead guitarist Roger Öjersson. This album also features the best song ever written by humans (that being Residual), but every other track is an absolute treat as well - Serein, Passer, Old Heart Falls, just to name a few. Serac is quite a journey. So much going on in there. It's interesting how you mentioned that to write these vocal lines and harmonies the vocalist needs to be good at his work, but, funnily enough, Jonas Renkse is far from being a great vocalist (if someone here has been to their live shows, they can confirm). Which doesn't take away from him being a top composer and musician overall though. Thank you Geebz for covering this band and thanks to your Patrons as well for requesting it.

@theorncampbell44322 жыл бұрын
9:20 You'll hear a LOT of Robert Smith as the starting point for the lead vocals. I'm not sure where the harmonies get their lead from. Maybe the 1960's in general. Oh and those "pads" at 13:50 are actually a beautiful post rock guitar tone. Kinda glassy, with the Shimmer effect on it and a long reverb with almost none of the attack of the dry signal in it. Not many things in the world of music that can cut force such a wide range of emotions like a shimmery, reverb ridden voice can.

Haven't heard the song yet but the comments seem to really like this band. #getexcite 2:30 into the video: really digging the clean vibes. Sounds like it is about to open up. 3:30 in: Vocals are really enjoyable. Distorted guitar tapping sets a really nice groove. Drums are awesome. 5:30 in: totally agree with Geebes. This sounds like it is going to be a fun ride. Just a couple of seconds later: Totally did not disappoint. I already want to find more from this band. 7:00 in: OMG the ambience mixed with the heavy and the drums is epic. Just a couple seconds later: Wow, I was not expecting the cleans to come back so nicely. 😊 8:00 Piano 😊

The best thing about Katatonia is that their songs actually "go somewhere". This is what real art sounds like. When you listen to your average rock or pop song, it's an easily digestible hook and chorus, and that's it. Katotonia provides an "experience" with their music. You just don't see that any more these days.
