Their 1st album, Dance of December Souls was with Jonas doing the harsh vocals, he damaged his voice and on their next album Brave Murder Day, Mikael from Opeth does the vocals, except for 1 song. After that, Jonas has been improving the voice you hear him singing with.

Jonas Renkse (lead vocals) also played drums, bass, guitar and keyboards in the studio... Jonas did extreme metal vocals on the 1st album only - 'Dance of the December Souls' (1993)... Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt did 'death metal' lead vocals for 1 album 'Brave Murder Day' (1996)... Katatonia had started as a Swedish black metal band, but it wasn't their call... Jonas and Anders Nystrom (guitars & bass) decided to make a change in 1998. Both Jonas and Anders play in a death metal project - Bloodbath. I think Jonas was not comfortable doing the 'death' vocals, so he switched to a gothic 'doom' metal voice and Katatonia sound on the 3rd album 'Discouraged ones'... Fred Norrman (guitar) and Micke Oretoft (bass) did the album... Fred's brother Mattias Norrman (bass) joined later on... Katatonia went even darker on the 4th album 'Tonight's decision' (1999). 5th album 'Last fair deal gone down' (2001) was a creative triumph... heavier, darker and bigger... Jonas, Anders, Fred, Mattias and Daniel Liljekvist (drums) solidified the Katatonia line-up... w/ songs like 'Teargas'... 'We must bury you'... "Don't tell a soul'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘 6th Katatonia album 'Viva emptiness' (2003) was a very angry record ... 7th album 'The great cold distance' (2006) became a fan fave... songs like 'My twin'... 'July'... "Soil song"... 'Leaders'... made it a classic 🤘🤘 Although Fred & Mattias Norrman were credited on the 8th album 'Night is the new day' (2009), they had both left Katatonia... Per Erikson (guitar) and Niklas Sandin (bass) did the tour and the next album 'Dead end kings' (2012). Daniel Liljekvist quit Katatonia and was replaced by Daniel Moilanen (drums)... Per Erikson was replaced by Roger Ojersson (guitar) for 'The fall of hearts' (2016)... Exhausted by constant touring, Katatonia announced a break around 2018... More than likely, band members quit Katatonia due to demands of touring and lack of finances for a band of their stature. Roger Ojersson had an accident in late 2017 and needed time off to recover... Just before the pandemic hit, Katatonia reunited to work on new music in 2019... New album 'City burials' (2020) was released in the early lockdown... Katatonia resumed touring afterwards in 2022, and have announced a new album 'Sky void of stars' in 2023.

I think you should do one more from this album before checking out there other albums. Some suggestions: Dissolving Bonds, Increase, Rusted, Journey through pressure, Deliberation.

You've heard a fair bit from their Great Cold Distance era, at this point, which is probably why you're recognizing elements, for example, of My Twin in this track. I do strongly recommend The Fall of Hearts. There's a ridiculous amount of material from that record, if you count the various bonus tracks (including, for some reason, a surprisingly good Judas Priest cover).

Katatonia has an acoustic album - 'Sanctitude'. It opens w/ "In the white" 🔥🔥Also includes "Teargas" and "Tonight's decision"... The have a few live albums - 'Dead air'... 'Live consternation'... 'Last fair day gone night'... 'The great cold distance - live'... One studio record called 'Dead End kings' (2012) was released without the guitars and drums (just vocals and the mellow elements) as 'Dethroned & uncrowned"(2013)

He had a demon probably before you were born, or maybe when you were very little. His singing style has changed quite a bit, as has their music, but his vocals have been clean since the mid-to-late 90's.

The Norrman brothers left because by this time they weren't really writing riffs suitable for Katatonia. They restarted the 'doom/death metal' band October Tide that Jonas and Fredrik briefly formed in 1994, which contains Jonas' last death metal vocals on a full length album. I thought Fredrik said in an interview he left the best band in the world though. Katatonia even did a live show with their original bassist from 1993 back in 2011, so they all seem on good terms.

Jonas plays bass and sings and anders plays guitar and does some backing screams. Anders has a solo project called Diabolical Masquerade. It is different but so good. Check out Hiz Obzidian Circuz.

Katatonia is a very underrated band. I cant see why cos the play so many styles that makes them so awesome. Even mom likes them, mostley the new softer songs but still, she is 72 ❤😊

This album came into my life perfectly, I was ridden with health issues for over 2 years had two surgeries and recovery was difficult both physically and mentally. In the white is a love song but for me it perfectly encapsulates regaining hope after difficult times. I have listened to it more times than i can count and i do so gladly now that im doing better than ever. Jonas' clean vocals are unmatched, amazing band.

The absolute best song of all time is Brave by Katatonia, which coincidentally has the demon from Opeth on vocals 😮- also maybe try Day from the same album where Jonas comes out with his first clean vocals while drumming and Anders gives his guitars a somewhat icicle sound

Oh, this was very nice! His voice is...idk, something very good. So, the bass player here is the same guy that's in Opeth? Anyway, I really like this one. Yes, let's hear the explicit one. I'm curious. Lol! I love seeing Mocha. I just became a cat mom, recently. An extremely cute stray, that has been hanging out outside of our apartment for about a year, has decided to live inside with us. Luckily our dog doesn't mind. I haven't been a cat mom for 25 years. Wish me luck. : )

In addition to the Sanctitude acoustic live album, they also did The Great Cold Distance Live in Bulgaria with the Orchestra of State Opera, Plovdiv. Which is exactly what it sounds like, the band plays through this whole album live with an orchestra backing them up. Sort of like Metallica S&M. I think I actually prefer Sanctitude but it's cool to hear them reinterpret their music in so many ways. They even have lots of great remixes too that stay faithful to the original spirit of the songs. Also, as great as Great Cold Distance is--and it is--I don't think it's their peak. This band keeps honing their skills more and more with each album and I think you'd be well served checking out any of the albums after GCD. Going backwards might be a little tougher but there's stuff to enjoy there too. Viva Emptiness, the album right before this one, is where they finally hit their stride imo. Early on they were a very influential death-doom band, super dreary with lots of harsh vocals until Jonas basically broke his voice and switched completely to cleans (although he still breaks out the demon once in a blue moon when performing the old songs). Between Jonas finding his voice and the band finding their sound through shifting influences, they went through a growth period for several albums (which many fans still love, definitely some highlights in there) until by Viva Emptiness they pretty much had arrived, and every album since then they've kept honing their more progressive sound. The album they just put out last Friday, Sky Void of Stars is relatively more straightforward but still really good and very much still them.

I struggled for so many years to connect to the song until I saw the live Salival version of the song and it instantly blew me away. I know that you have your own agenda but if you would please react to the live version I truly believe you would love it.
