Very accurate video. but remember this: never use "sori" when talking to eldery person or when working in customer service job even if it's just a small favor. Using "olen pahoillani" to eldery people or customers you will show them respect and they will most likely forgive you. It's a magic word ;)

In Finnish everyday life when people collide e.g. at the entrances of shops or bump into each other in crowds, the courageous puhekieli version "OHO" combined with targeted and brisk walking is also used as a common 5 way to apologize. But what is the best way to respond "olet tervetullut"? Too long, maybe "ole hyvä" or just "hyvä" or "Hups"? Or with routine interaction, both say "OHO" What do you think about this?
@KatChatsFinnish
@KatChatsFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
I would say the most natural response would be “ei mitään” which kinda means “it’s nothing”

Hey Kat, There’s a band called Värttinä that I often listen to, and I enjoy reading the lyrics to their songs and to sing along. Here’s a question (I apologize that it is a bit long-winded): The band apparently sings in Karelian, as they come from east Finland. So my question is, is Karelian alot different from standard Finnish of example west Finland, so much so that they are seperate Finnic languages? I’d like to avoid confusing the two haha. Here’s a paragraph from one of their songs: Myö uskoimma uroja, Ottajia uottelimma. Ai lole, ottajia, Ottajia uottelimma Mieli teki miehelähän, Riiuureisuille ruveta. Ai lole reissulle, Riiuureissulle ruveta Thanks ☺️, Ivan
@morzearo
@morzearo 2 жыл бұрын
Karelian is a dialect of finnish, not a separate language. Except it can be argued that the Karelian dialect spoken in the russian part of Karelia has developed further away from the finnish language due to heavy influence of russian language. Finnish dialects can be very different to the official written finnish and usually might not be understood by people from a different region. Still, people can switch out of their dialect into formal finnish, if they are not understood by the person they are speaking with. I hope this helps.

in Finnish, sanoin => i said, sanoit => you said and in Turkish, söyledim => i said, söyledin => you said. Finnish and Turkish are grammaticly similar (very similar :) ) and i don't know why. I've read two books of Finnish history, but couldnt find any etymological connection, but why languages have similarity? interesting
@KatChatsFinnish
@KatChatsFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that’s actually really interesting!
@bigscarysteve
@bigscarysteve 3 жыл бұрын
That's a subject called language typology. There are really only a finite number of possible structures that the grammar of a language can take, based on the workings of the human mind. Because of that, coincidental similarities are bound to happen.
@eenvoo
@eenvoo 3 жыл бұрын
@@bigscarysteve Hmm it makes sense thank you :) actually I thought about this before. But Finland and Turkey too far away from each other (geographically). And still have some similarities, that was my point. Etc: uurastin (F) = uğraştım (T) and kalabaliikki (F) = kalabalık (T). These two are interesting :) ( I'm not against what you say :) I just wanted to share extra information )
@bigscarysteve
@bigscarysteve 3 жыл бұрын
@@eenvoo Geographical distance really is irrelevant when it comes to languages being related. All it takes is for some members of a group to migrate somewhere while leaving others of their language community behind. Just look at English--it originated in Britain, but it's now spoken widely across North America and Australia, among other places. A hundred years ago, linguists would have told you that Turkish was related to a lot of languages in a family called the Ural-Altaic language family. Then they decided that they had lumped too many languages together based on similar grammatical structures, but without enough evidence of any etymological relationships. It has now been proposed that the old Ural-Altaic grouping is actually four separate language families: Uralic (including Finnish, Estonian and Hungarian), Turkic (including Turkish, Azerbaijani, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Turkmen, and Uzbek), Tungusic (including Manchu), and Mongolic (including Mongolian). If you're really interested, I can suggest a book to you. (I say "suggest" rather than "recommend" because I haven't actually read it yet--but it's on my list of books I want to read.) It's _The Boundaries of Babel: The Brain and the Enigma of Impossible Languages_ by Andrea Moro.
