It wasn't a director, it was Kate's co-actor. She was a new mom at the time and she was still breastfeeding while she filmed, so probably tired and fragile. Michael had come to the set to pick up their baby, he saw the actor yelling at his wife for something about a missed line, even making her cry, and he intervened
