I've often thought this is one of Kate's masterpieces. It's so gorgeous yet heartbreaking, and shows how intelligent and profound her songwriting truly is.
@delorangeade3 жыл бұрын
This still stands as one of Kate's best songs for me. Straightforward storytelling without any gimmicks, other than the sound of the rifle bolt. In a way this ties in with Up the Junction by Squeeze and choices open to working class boys at that time. What do you do when you are sixteen years old and not destined for university? I think it was more common then than now to leave school at sixteen and join the army, especially for those liable to find themselves in trouble in civilian life. True for a couple of friends of mine, anyway. At the time this was released unemployment was on the rise, the British army was still engaged in Northern Ireland and the Falklands War was just over the horizon.

Justin, this song always reminds me of the futilities of war when innocent, usually poor men and women, are found wanting in conflict. Sure, some are coerced to join up because of the hope of a career and training but in the end they find it was not a good choice. Some die, like in Kate's song, where the mother gets a message from the B.F.P.O (British Forces Post Office) that her son is coming home a hero....in a box! My father would never talk much about WW2, where he served in the Pacific, other than the 'mateship' that defined him and his fellow soldiers. He certainly wanted me to join the services in the belief I would learn this 'mateship'. My older brother joined the Navy, learned to become a photographer and my younger brother, your namesake, was in the 1st Gulf War. Neither of them have fond memories of their time in the services. In my father's eyes my pacifism he could not understand.

"What a waste of army dreamers"... isn't that not only that the dreams of these boys (and their Mothers and families) are gone, but also saying "stop dreaming about the army, stop telling tales of how adventurous it is to be a soldier, stop sending young people into wars" Defending ones country against a foreign army is something totally different than having this war-industries going on and on.

@jumpjet7773 жыл бұрын
Apart from the rifle reloading sound in the background, there is a backing vocal rhyming "BFPO, Mummy's hero". The 2nd Part is obvious, but for those that are not aware, BFPO=British Forces Post Office. So an address for a serving soldier, sailor, or airman (especially overseas) would include BFPO xxxx, a Zip/Postal Code which would route the mail into the military mail system, which used to be based at Mill Hill near London, but since moved to RAF Northolt, also nr London

You are keeping me entertained very well, Justin! Ha ha. Yesterday with the first half of E.L.O.'s Eldorado and now with Kate's Army Dreamers. Army Dreamers was a modest hitsingle at the time, which doesn't end in this fade out, but with a clean and quite gorgeous ending while the lyrics end with "Mummy's darling". The repeating sound indeed is a rifle being reloaded. You honored her attitude towards the subject. Kate is always very critical to herself and nothing in her production ever seems coincidental. Apart from a few strange phenomena... she never walks away when they may occur. This song leads so beautifully towards the final track 'Breathing'. That is something completely else. I hope and expect you to be pleasantly surprised by that one.

A theory - maybe not right, but here goes. Being in the US in the 80s, I rarely was exposed to Kate Bush & when I was it didn't "grab me" (except for Running Up That Hill). I only became a fan many years later. I've always wondered why she is so 'virtually unknown' here, while a huge superstar in europe. My theory is this... unless you read the lyrics while listening, for some reason we americans have a really hard time making out her words. And her lyrics are usually head & shoulders above what anyone writes (then or now) in rock or pop music.

I bought this when it hit the stores, I was in the Air Force stationed in the UK and happy to be there. So long as nations have weapons of destruction and are adversarial there will be a need for military units to defend their country and those of our allies. Yes there is also abuse of military force, last I heard we had troops in 60 countries around the globe. I just found an article that states there are only 3 countries we've never had troops in: Andorra, Bhutan, and Liechtenstein. The final song on the album 'Breathing' was a single and there's a video, it's devastating.

I like Kate's use of the gun re-loading sound effect in this song as well. My take is that the "gun" represents war itself, and it's human lives that are being re-loaded and spent with every cycle - which just keeps repeating, over and over and over... Thank you for the reaction. As always.

To me the waltz symbolises the link with the past, using a deliberately old-fashioned style to say ''Look how long we've been doing this! How much longer and how many more?''

The video for this song is spectacular! Kate and his musicians are soldiers fighting a battle into the woods. The sound of the gun being reloaded is portrayed by Kate constantly closing and opening her eyes. At a certain point Kate have a series of repeating visions in which she thinks to see her missing son hiding behind a tree (first as a child, then as a boy, then as a 20 years old soldier) but every time she run to hug him the boy disappears and she ends up hugging the tree. An extreme close-up of the opening and closing of her eyes with the reloading sound is edited between this scenes and that redifines the act as a click of a camera, by which she desperately hope that the next time her son will appear in the frame. Very profound and tragic!

The constant refrain you hear of 'BFPO' stands for British Forces Post Office. It can also mean British Forces Posted Overseas. I'm sure Kate draws on some personal experiences too, but one of her gifts is to able to put her herself in the mind of her characters, much like a novelist does. She lets you inside their point of view, be it a child, a mother, a father, a woman or a man or sometimes something more ethereal or supernatural. Rather than revealing much from her own personal life, her lyrical strength lies in a deep empathy for her creations, even those that may not necessarily be a sympathetic character, Kate herself appears to be non-judgemental, allowing the listener to make up their own mind.

Along with all the other intelligent points you brought up... I think there's the essence of people seeing the ads for the military where they glorify everything but ignore the horror of actual war. There's a dream quality to thinking that one will be a superman to defeat the enemy... but that quickly dissolves amidst the hail of bullets, chaos, and carnage. The courage it takes to follow orders and put yourself in harm's way is massive... but far too often politicians and the military brass just feed the slaughter. Kate's brilliant words once again take us back to the mothers who are left with the remains of war.

The contrast between the musical style and the lyric subject matter was always an interesting effect. You always use the phrase, 'Its simply Kate'...and here it literally applies, and where I think Kate is at her very best and most intimate, just the simplicity of her voice with a background of subtle sounds perhaps to create a canvass for her voice to paint what I always felt, here, was a mothers guilt, a despairing self blame in being unable to prevent her son's ultimate destiny. The tempo, a waltz that matches the steps taken for funeral march as the body is carried, the rifles unlocked in preparation for tribute...this is why she is an utter genius, a simple melodic composition at first hearing...but the subtle nuances...the Irish accent she sings it in, for me personally, resonated a sense of poverty, where education and lack of wealth led many a working class son towards the military... what else could they do as she says in the song. That's what simplicity does, its exposes the great artist. A great album it is, but over familiarity with it, it features low in my ranking...but this is the album where catharsis takes place...the child Kate has grown here, the butterfly free from its confines...love her to bits.

At the time this was made there was a long running confrontation in Northern Irland with the British Army The IRA used a lot of what would now be known as IED,s Hence like a chicken with a fox. I dont know if it is deliberate but in the scenes in the video with the explosions the flash is Green orange and white similar to the Irish flag.. Brilient song when you realy listen to what has been said. It is in the same vein as elvis costelos a shipbuilding which is about the Faklands War in Thatcher Britain when Manufacturing was destroyed leaving many unemployed in the heavy industries such as Shiobuilding.

Maybe its just my imagination, because this song gives me chills every time, but it looked like you were getting quite affected by this one? I love this song for those poignant lyrics, but also Kate's sweet sounding Irish accent (based on her own mothers). I think there is also a subtle nod to how the "dreaming" could refer to that kind of macho expectation of going in the army and getting honor and respect - which was probably especially prominant in post-war teenagers in the UK - but in the end all you end up with is a greiving mother.

Just woke from a dream that I figured was projecting back to me. I’ll try and learn from it. Peace and 123 Music

I think you'd find Night of the Swallow (The Dreaming album) interesting.

Great great song. The video is also pretty decent 🥰. The music reminds me of "Doll on a music box" from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
