In the original version of the song Kate included direct quotes from Ulysses, because she thought that the copyright has expired. However, it was still owned by the Joyce Estate and they refused her permission, so she had to re-work the song into this form. You're right in that it's about Molly Bloom stepping out of the pages of the novel into the real world. Subsequently to this song being released the Joyce Estate changed their mind and gave Kate permission to use the words directly. So Kate was able to go back to the original idea. This version now called "Flower Of The Mountain" appeared on her "Directors Cut" album which features re-worked versions of previous songs. As for follow up songs from Kate I'm again casting my vote for Breathing from "Never For Ever" . Together with the following remaining singles from her experimental album "The Dreaming" namely: 📍The Dreaming 📍Suspended In Gaffa 📍There Goes A Tenner 📍Night Of The Swallow There are also some amazing album tracks in that album as well, but first see what you think about the official single releases.

Who knew sweet little Kate had it in her. She's singing in caricature. Molly Bloom from the James Joyce novel Ulysses. If you look up Molly Bloom it's from her Soliloquy and the very ending of the novel. Only Kate would or could come up with this. But she pulls it off in a grand way.

The very final part of the James Joyce book "Ulysses" is of Molly Bloom lying in her bed trying to get to sleep, her mind drifting into memories of the time her husband proposed to her. She wants to drift off before the bells will wake her up in the early morning. Here is the very last line of the book: "he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes." Molly has to get up in the morning and she wants to sleep before the Dublin church bells will wake her. In the video the bells effectively signifies the start of the next day and when Molly gets up (lifted from the pages) Kate Bush has imagined a complete world of sensuality there to meet her : "You don’t need words-just one kiss, then another."

Hi and thanks for another Kate Bush reaction. As others have explained, this song is based on Molly Bloom's soliloquy from James Joyce's Ulysses. In it Molly recalls her first sexual experience with Leopold Bloom. The book is set across an entire single day and ran into several controversies including an obscenity trial in the USA that effectively banned the book in the US. Kate had thought that it was out of copyright and went ahead with a song only to find out that it was still copyright (a bit like being a KZbin reactor!!!). So she had to recast the song. This turned out to be something of a beneficial turn of events. Because it led her to introduce into the song the lyric: "Stepping out of the page into the sensual world. Stepping out" This gives the song a broader, wider concept than just the discovery of sexual sensuality. it depicts a person going from 2D to 3D, leaving the book and actually experiencing the real world of senses. Musically it was in part inspired by a Balkan, Macedonian piece 'Nevestinsko Oro' which helps to explain the way that she weaves together those different musical traditions. Like the book, the video runs the course of a single day. In it Kate continually moves forwards even when walking backwards (that is pretty much the entire video) - the world behind her moves as the day runs its course, but in this new sensual world all that she does is move forwards into it. Despite all of the passion that lies at the heart of Molly's soliloquy, the truth is she never actually touched or felt anything - being confined to the pages of a novel, the real world of the senses lies eternally out of reach. This song invites us to move forward into that world of the senses and makes particular use of various metaphors and allegorical imagery relating to that most personal and intimate arousal and experience of the senses to convey this. Although by Kate Bush standards this seems to be a much more simple melody and much less outlandish arrangement for a song, I think it is a tremendous composition. I know I am in a small minority, but this is my favourite Kate Bush album and any look at her official video really needs to include the glorious "This Woman's Work" originally the final song on the album. The video for it is one of the most acclaimed Kate Bush videos and is one that she directed herself, and everything about the song and video is perfect. And so as a suggestion for a follow up Kate Bush song, then if you want one with a video I would probably vote for 'This Woman's Work.' If you want one without a video, I would probably vote for 'Rocket's Tail' also from this album, or 'Night of the Swallow' or 'Leave it Open' from her album 'The Dreaming.' Thanks again

It's likely the Uillean pipes rather than bagpipes as she has Irish heritage and this song is based on an Irish book. It sounds like them anyway rather than the bagpipes.

Yeah they are Uilleann pipes. They're basically known as the national bagpipe of Ireland. Kate is actually half Irish as her mother was Irish. Hence why she had a fondness for using them in some of her music.
