It's fair to call her something approaching a genius. How many 13 year olds could write The Man with the Child in His Eyes? She's in her teens and writing music of the kind that established artists are writing in their 2nd album when they've found their voice.

She's a storyteller and many of her songs are inspired by a literary narrative. According to Wikipedia, Cloudbusting takes its inspiration from the 1973 Peter Reich memoir A Book of Dreams which Bush read and found deeply moving, the song is about the very close relationship between psychiatrist and philosopher Wilhelm Reich and his young son, Peter. It describes the boy's memories of his life with Reich on their family farm, called Orgonon, where the two spent time "cloudbusting", a rain-making process which involved using a machine designed and built by Reich - a machine called a cloudbuster - to point at the sky. The lyrics further describes the elder Reich's abrupt arrest and imprisonment, the pain of loss the young Peter felt, and his helplessness at being unable to protect his father.

Donald Sutherland once told he originally refused to be part of a music video, he said to his manager to decline. Later that day somebody knocked on the door of his hotel room. Donald opened the door, and there stood this tiny woman in front of him. It was Kate Bush who wanted to convince him to do this. Fortunately she was successful.

Her albums from Never Forever onwards are all essential listening for anyone who appreciates real art and innovation in music, made by an artist who so obviously makes music because they have to. Many imitators followed, but she's still in a class of her own.

I would say ALL her albums, right from the start ("The Kick Inside" and "Lionheart" included) are essentiel listening. Those 2 albums were written (except 3 songs) from the age of 13 to 18 which makes Kate Bush a remarkable and rare pop artist, and are surely not anecdotal or trivial compared to those that will follow. "The Kick Inside" is one of the most impressive debut albums EVER, don't you think? Personnally, I exclusively listened to this album at the time it was released, and I still see it as incredibly unique. "Lionheart", released the same year, is commonly seen as a pale follow-up, which I much disagree with. There was an obvious evolution, especially for the Lyrics. But I agree with the fact that from "Never for Ever", things became more and more fascinating. "The Dreaming" and "Hounds of Love" are just masterpieces.
@ZoolGatekeeper

@@cuckoofan Yes, I have all of her albums, obviously.(and some 2nd tries too and Aerial)... 'Lionheart' wasn't a strong album as a whole, but it contained 'Wow' and 'Searching for Peter Pan' at least. 'Kick inside' was a very strong debut album(as you said and if I say I have the vinyl, you know I'm vEery OLD), and besides the obvious famous tracks I'd like to mention 'Moving' as my favourite track. Kate makes music you remember rather than forget.

Around the time of the release Bush sent Peter Reich a VHS copy of the music video. Reich was immediately a fan. This is a very deep song with a lot of backstory. This song was inspired by Peter Reich's writings about his relationship with his father Wilhelm Reich, whose theories and opinions were suppressed by the FDA back in the 1930's. He was jailed for two years for contempt, literal tons of his publications were ordered burned by the court. He died after about a year incarcerated, of a heart attack. Donald Sutherland is Wilhelm Reich in the video. Kate is Peter. It is a great video. The song of course is phenomenal. "You looked too small in that big black car to be a threat to the men in power." Yet in reality, he did seem a threat to then, they jailed him, and destroyed his work. Very powerful song.

The cloudbusting machine was designed and fabricated by HR Giger and co,, and is very beautiful. The actual cloudbusters were much, much smaller, and had several thin pipes that pointed straight up at the sky. A note on the song: this was a special mix for this short film, while the album mix is shorter. The extended section comes when Peter (Kate) and Reich (Donald Sutherland) are in his study, through to where the men are coming down the steps. If you want to understand Kate, you have to realize she is a storyteller, very filmic, and knows exactly how to make the music and lyrics work to enhance the story.

@@heathermaysloan it is called Cloudbusting: the Orgonon Mix. Originally, there were 12-inch singles of four of the songs on side one of Hounds of Love. On the b side of each 12-in single were shorter extra songs. A long time ago a box set called This Woman's Work was released, and it included two CDs of all the singles through the Sensual World album, as well as all of the albums up to and including that one. Then in 2018, Kate remastered all of the albums and all of the singles and released a box set on her Fish People label. You can actually buy a four CD set of the singles on her website or Amazon. It is called The Other Sides.

This album, both sides, is a masterpiece. Kate Bush is a musicologist like Brian Eno, David Byrne, Ruyuchi Sakamoto and David Sylvian. Plus, she has something those others don't have and that's the ability to use her own voice as a musical instrument. Decades later this album is still one I have to listen to from start to end without breaks and one I always get new meanings and hear new things each time I listen. She is also one of those artists of artists. She is a dancer, choreographer, writer etc... so her musical compositions feel 'well thought out" like you said.

This is Kate when her lower voice was gaining strength. She, like Joni Mitchell, started out as a light soprano. This is a chronological list where you can hear her vocal development. Oh yes, the videos show her dancing skills: The Man With the Child in His Eyes, Feel It, Wow (Version 1 video), Hammer Horror (live at Hammersmith-Odeon video), Babooska (video), Army Dreamers (video), Pull Out the Pin, Houdini, Get Out of My House, Running Up That Hill (video), And Dream of Sheep, Jig of Life, This Woman's Work, Moments of Pleasure (video), Lily, and Ne T'un Fe Pas. There is no one like her. She and Joni hold the standard for singer-songwriters, male or female. Both, completely different from each other, are artists of the Highest Order. I hope you can sample some of these, ideally as listed! Happy Listening!

She produces her own records too. She knows exactly how something should sound. This song was used very successfully in a long sequence in a Handmaids Tale - the video is on you tube, type Handmaids tale Kate Bush. They’ve used at least two of her songs.

She is also supported by David Gilmour, Peter Gabriel and the German jazz bass player Eberhard Weber, among others. Gilmour appears to have "discovered" her. Gabriel sang with her and Weber played bass in in some songs. Her lyrics are good literature, too.

Just one of the great tracks from one of the quintessential Art Rock albums: "Hounds of Love". This sounds like one of the many remixes of Cloudbusting though I'm not sure which one. Yes, it's Donald Sutherland. ;)

I like how. it ends with a steam train whistle. A steam train, of course, does create a 'cloud' of steam. Steam trains also have a nostalgic or romantic image and this ties with the regular, relentless, 'driving' beat of some other songs on the Hounds of Love album, particularly the song Hounds of Love itself, Running up that Hill, and Under Ice.

Hmmm. Where to begin? And here's the rub: where to end? This might not go so well. I read the excerpt of Peter (played by Kate here)Reich's book in Rolling Stone, several years before this, may have read the book itself shortly thereafter, chronicling his childhood and the efforts of his dad, Wilhelm (Donald)Reich to make it rain for stricken communities, some of which professed faith in and gratitude for Reich's methods and efforts and seeming results. Peter eventually succumbed to mental health issues, apparently as a result of drug use. Reich Sr. was persecuted...I don't think there's any other more appropriate term for it, by the government. Much as Nicola Tesla was tailed, his every discarded jotting on a restaurant napkin dutifully collected and archived, so too were Reich's writings scooped up and filed away. His, though, have been widely discredited by the scientific establishment later, whereas Tesla is prototypically synonymous with mad visionary/genius. I also had a copy of Wilhelm's 'The Mass Psychology of Fascism' in my collection for years and really came to regret finally having passed it on...oh, about two US elections ago. William ('Naked Lunch', Steely Dan)Burroughs was said to have an orgone box, a bed, a writing desk and chair and little else in his longtime room at the "Y" in New York, I think. My sister-in-law, something of a counter-culture celebrity at one time, shepherded Burroughs around Vancouver for a day prior to an appearance at the "avant-garde" gallery she worked with, and took him to the zoo. She also asked in her inimitable rasp if he really hated women. Just because of having shot his wife accidentally in a narcotic fog? I don't know, it's been years since I last tried to read him. I love Kate's Dickensian urchin look in this video, that ginger thatch. 😁 This is the album following 'The Dreaming', which was the first, iirc, recorded at Peter Gabriel's studio and largely utilizing the Fairlight (q.v., heeheehee). I have always found it a more daunting listen and simultaneously more "mature", serious and pointed, though at what, I couldn't pin down. Why would you?

It's a shame that so many geniuses of their time are both discredited by the Scientific establishment and also ruined by the combined efforts of the government and corporate/banking interests.

She’s such a polymath that I feel her work as a trailblazing producer has been overlooked. It’s pretty amazing that a successful female pop artist in the early 80’s was producing her own albums. This album and “The Dreaming” have some pretty distinct choices (the latter rubbing a lot of people the wrong way for its abrasive and experimental approach). And yeah, “meticulous” is right. She was in a long-term relationship with a veteran session bass player that she would have record for her albums and supposedly she would frequently go back and re-do his parts herself because everything had to be just so. How she had time to direct music videos and do choreography and play half of the instruments and produce the albums herself in addition to writing and performing these massive conceptually complicated works is anybody’s guess. It’s no wonder she became reclusive and started putting out an album a decade after age 30; she had already done enough for three careers by then. A fun fact I learned about her: she was the first performing artist to wear a headset microphone on stage, which was necessitated by her elaborate stage show which she of course choreographed herself at the age of 18. At her insistence her crew helped her put together a headset out of a wire coat hanger so she could have her hands free for interpretative dance, which she of course had studied with some master. Being on the wrong side of thirty myself it’s almost depressing how accomplished and competent she was at such a young age.
