Back in the 1980s, my first wife and I listened to a lot of music together; Gabriel's "So" album was a frequent spin. In 1987 she was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, and the tumor was deemed "inoperable," so chemo was the only chance. This song -- that message, don't give up -- was immeasurably helpful to keep her spirits up, to keep fighting. 32 years now without her, and this song still brings the mist to my eyes.

1988, I was three years in to a long distance relationship, I was from the uk, she was in Denmark, I was in the Navy. The strain of being apart so much was beginning to tell and I felt she was slipping away. So three years after we first me we are back in the same bar, dancing and having fun, when this song came on. I held her tight as we danced then made the biggest decision of my life. I got down on one knee and proposed. we were happily married for 30 years, this song was our wedding dance. Last year it also played at the funeral of my wife as she fell victim of Covid 19. The song will always have a special significance for me, just like my wife will always be in my heart.

True story: While in college in the late 80's, 1 night in I was drunk and feeling down about a woman, and I drove down a winding road which ran along the side of the Wisconsin River. It was a very treacherous road with many curves, and it was known for bad accidents. Somehow I made it down the whole stretch, even though I was driving at excessive speed, and I really didn't care if I would crash; In fact, I think at some point it was my goal. Then when I turned around with the plan of driving back with the same reckless abandon, this song came on the radio, and I just pulled over and began to cry. Now every time I hear this song, I'm completely filled with gratefulness and thanks, cuz it totally woke me up and turned my life around!

on YT somewhere there's a video of a Gabriel concert in South America some years back. Between songs, Peter read from translated texts, since he didn't speak the language (may have been Portuguese; not sure). When it came time to introduce the band, he started with the newest member, which meant Tony would be the last... Right after Peter named guitarist David Rhodes, the cheering for Tony started and grew steadily louder as PG read the text; when he spoke Tony's name, the place erupted. So much love for PG's longest-serving colleague and an iconic, beloved bassist.

From Wikipedia: "He composed lyrics within a situation about a man whose unemployment causes stress in his domestic relationship. The verses, sung by Gabriel, describe the man's feelings of isolation, loneliness and despair; the choruses, sung by Bush, offer words of hope and encouragement." Kinda relevant what with covid causing widespread job losses and economic downturns causing economic strain in the home. Brilliant song.

This is UNBELIEVABLE! EXACTLY 40 years ago, on December 18, 1980, my father died by suicide in a particularly horrific way. I was 13 and back then we dealt with such things by "being a man" about it. The aftermath was a decades-long NIGHTMARE for me. This song has always been so very IMPORTANT to me because that has been the role my wife has unceasingly played for me throughout our relationship. Then on December 18, 2018, a man came into the parking lot where I work and committed suicide in the EXACT SAME WAY as my father. Once again my wife's support was nothing less than heroic and I spent a lot of time listening to this song. Now... you, Jamel, you picked December 18, 2020, to feature THIS song! I have always thought that God came to a point with the man in 2018 where he said, "I've done all I can but he still chooses to take his own life. Therefore all I can do is to steer him into a place where this act may do some good for someone else. Maybe David can have a second chance to deal with his father's suicide." And now, for whatever reason, you were "inspired" to listen to THIS song on THIS day.

This song means so much to me. It helped me deal with my depression during a time of unemployment a few months ago. It was suggested to me by my therapist. Although I already knew it from my adolescence, this time I really listened. It caused a breakthrough in my state of pent-up emotions and allowed me to really face my condition for the first time in months. I cried like the 55 year old child that I am and even now, months later I couldn't keep it dry. Thank you very much for reacting to this Jamel. You changed my day today, that's for sure.

Sounds like we've had the same experience. I lived through the '80s when I was a teenager, and I didn't hear this song then, but I bought his "So" album as a used CD when I was in my early 30s. I listened to this song off it, and it didn't affect me at first. Then I lost my job, and I had a terrible time finding work, because it was in the midst of a downturn in my industry. I was in the dumps. I listened to it again, and I bawled. It so touched what I was feeling, and I loved hearing Kate sing, "Don't give up." It's what I needed to hear. I was part of a job search group that met regularly to swap ideas. I felt like suggesting this song to everyone there, but I was reticent, because of the part where Peter sings about, "Gonna stand on that bridge, keep my EYES down below. Whatever may come, and whatever may go, that river's flowing." In my mind, that seemed like he was contemplating suicide, though he doesn't go through with it. Very powerful, but scary. I didn't want to give anyone any ideas, but I put it forward anyway with a disclaimer, saying I wasn't talking about that. I got a response from someone in the group saying thank you. As I can see here, I think this song helped a lot of people. Good job, Peter and Kate.

Kate Bush is a truly a rare gem and she does not get nearly half the recognition she deserves. If you want to be moved to your very core, listen to Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work". The song tells the story of a woman dying in childbirth and her struggle to stay alive. I bawl like a baby whenever I hear this. The other song you should listen to of hers is the remastered version of Wuthering Heights. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd plays the guitar and delivers a blistering solo at the end of the song. Both songs are just beautiful pieces of finely spun music that will grab your soul.

Kate Bush has the voice of an angel. You might want to give "Moments of Pleasure" a listen. It's an elegy for friends and family she's lost, and even if you don't know who they are, you'll want to have a bit of quiet time after listening to it.

“This Women’s Work” by Kate Bush is devastatingly beautiful. In the John Hughes’ movie ‘She’s Having a Baby,” the intensely honest sadness scene will touch your soul, especially if you’ve had miscarriages. We’ve been BLESSED with an amazingly stellar girl, who just turned 16. She knows that she has four siblings, two before and two after her that are part of our family that are loved. I found myself saying after the 4th miscarriage not why all those happened but realizing she’s is a God given gift.

I've been a fan of Peter Gabriel since his time with Genesis and when he toured for the So album I went to see him live, a show I'll never forget. This song has a special meaning for me and it's quite odd that you decide to react to it now, at this time of year. You see, my father committed suicide the 13th of december 2006, he left a note on the kitchen table and we never found his body. I came to terms with this event but there's ONE thing that I could never accept, he died alone thinking that no one needed or loved him and that's the worst thing a human can feel. I wish this for no one. If you feel you're done down here on this ball, please, please don't give up.

This song deals with the utter despair that strikes a man when he's lost his livelihood. When he feels like a failure and he's scared that he won't be able to provide for his family. The video shows a visual representation how a couple hangs on to each other like a lifeline. There'ssomething inhumane about a person being robbed of their dignity when they are unable to have what they need to support themselves or their family.

Ohh, you have hit the gold seam with this one. Two of the greatest British musical artists, bordering on mad geniuses. These are two artists that regularly put out tracks that are of 'heavy' subject matter. Peter Gabriel, Recommended early songs of Solsbury Hill, Games without Frontiers, Beko, Shock The Monkey. He pretty much invented the sound of the 80's drum. Kate Bush, Recommended, The Man with the Child in His Eyes, Breathing, Babooska, Army Dreamers, Sat in your Lap, The Dreaming, all the singles from Hounds of Love. Take the dive, you will thank yourself.
