The cool thing is when you realize that all the choreography, the costuming, the set, the lyrics, the music, all the things that are related to artistry, that is all Kate. Its her. All you see and hear are her ideas. One amazing woman. No shade to the artists of camera operation, lighting, sound, editing, that put their own sweat and art into this media.

This is one of those songs you grow up with that your mom loves and you wonder why she loves it. Then you come across is later in life and you wonder why you hated it to begin with. It's unique, eclectic, and catchy. Many artists today wouldn't be here without this talented woman. She helped inspire Bjork and Florence + the Machine. She was an art pop mastermind. She may seem weird, but she knew what she was doing.

one of my best friends ever is a mega kate bush fan. the first time i heard this song, we were smoking and i was so high i could barely comprehend what i was hearing. the quick & snappy rhythm, the insane vocal performance, the oddly biblical and self-aware and existential (almost self-deprecating) lyrics, the child-like scared whispering in the background, it put me in a headspace i don't know how to describe. it was like i was a child again or something. it was almost like a song i heard before i was born, wherever you are before you live, and hearing it again took me back to that place. it took me back to a place i can't even really comprehend or i even know for sure exists. chills. i love this song because of that.

[Verse 1] Out in the garden there's half of a heaven And we're only bluffing - we're not ones for busting through walls But they've told us unless we can prove that We're doing it we can't have it all I want it all [Verse 2] He's gonna wangle a way to get out of it She's an excuse and a witness who'll talk when he's called But they've told us unless we can prove that We're doing it we can't have it all I want it all, I want it all We can't have it all I want it all [Pre-Chorus 1] "I caught a glimpse of God, all shining and bright..." [Chorus] Suddenly my feet are feet of mud It all goes slow-mo I don't know why I'm crying Am I suspended in gaffa? Not until I'm ready for you Not until I'm ready for you Can I have it all? [Verse 3] I try to get nearer, but as it gets clearer There's something appears in the way - it's a plank in me eye With a camel who's trying to get through it Am I doing it? Can I have it all now? I want it all [Verse 4] I pull out the plank and say, "Thank you for yanking me Back to the fact that there's always something to distract But sometimes it's hard to know if I'm doing it right" Can I have it all now? I want it all Can I have it all now? I want it all Can I have it all? I want it all I can't have it all [Pre-Chorus 2] "We all have a dream... maybe" [Chorus] Suddenly my feet are feet of mud It all goes slow-mo I don't know why I'm crying Am I suspended in gaffa? Not until I'm ready for you Not until I'm ready for you Can I have it all? [Verse 5] I won't open boxes that I am told not to I'm not a Pandora, I'm much more like That girl in the mirror between you and me She don't stand a chance of getting anywhere at all I want it all Not anywhere at all I want it all No, not a thing I want it all She can't have it all [Pre-Chorus 3] "Mother, where are the angels? I'm scared of the changes" [Chorus] Suddenly my feet are feet of mud It all goes slow-mo I don't know why I'm crying Am I suspended in Gaffa? Not until I'm ready for you Not until I'm ready for you [Chorus] Suddenly my feet are feet of mud It all goes slow-mo I don't know why I'm crying Am I suspended in Gaffa? Just as beautiful and fresh as it sounded more than 30 years ago. Timeless. Some insight into the meaning of the song from Kate herself: "The idea of the song is that of being given a glimpse of 'God' - something that we dearly want - but being told that unless we work for it, we will never see it again, and even then, we might not be worthy of it. Of course, everybody wants the reward without the toil, so people try to find a way out of the hard work, still hoping to claim the prize, but such is not the case. The choruses are meant to express the feeling of entering timelessness as you become ready for the experience, but only when you are ready."

@@razrv3lc i'm sure most people know it's about wanting something and not wanting to work for it. but a lot of people, especially those who didn't grow up in the organized church, may not have understood all the biblical references kate makes in this song, which are what i think gives the song so much of its power. comparing something you want to a god that you can see but can't reach -- and some people may not have gotten the god part.

I cant even explain what this song does to me... It just breaks me and makes me feel a sense of familiarity and dreaming. I had a wonderful old art tutor when I was very young and she was the first person I ever felt like I had a true emotional and spiritual connection... The scene where Kate hugs this older woman.. Thats what my tutor looked like... I grew up, we fell out, I was depressed and shutting others out... Now years later... Theres no way of me contacting this woman in the flesh, but rather... I feel she is my angel. I still feel her warmth and presence. I would love to know who Kate was feeling that towards in this video... Imagine being lost in your own whimsy and never feeling grounded... Yet a hug from who ever she was is what she dreamed of most. Its shattering yet I feel so much love. Oh my gods... This song always was special to me and to see the video truly ROCKED me!

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a joke. Considering what "artists" are in it, nothing more needs to be said. Paul Allen Most artists in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame deserve to be in it, so what's your point?
@paulallen8109
@paulallen8109 10 жыл бұрын
Neuroneos Malcolm McLaren's pseudo-punk project Sex Pistols too? A single album granted them entry? Ritchie Valens? Bill Haley? Bee Gees? AC/DC (many metalheads think they're not even worth mentioning), George Harrison's contribution to music was questionable to more than just the ex-Beatles. Robert Christgau, a huge Beatles fan rated most of his albums C- . ABBA weren't even liked by Swedish critics, who constantly scratched their heads how they ever made it big abroad. Did they ever release a truly good album? Donna Summer?? Kiss, the Spice Girls of 70's hard rock? And then we come to Madonna. Kudos to her for managing to "reinvent" herself every four years and staying fit in her 50's. Musically she's not even on the radar. That is but mentioning a few. A few too many artists who made their names with covers and mainstream fame just to be ignored. And a few too many overlooked ones who truly were admired pioneers (many of which did commercially well) and made their *own* path in music rather than following trends. "Most artists in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame deserve to be in it, so what's your point?" Sounds like a cop-out to me. If that is your belief then what is your issue with Kate Bush not being in it? Obviously she's not worthy to be in this group of "most artsts" then. If that is your wisdom Mr./Ms.Troll then you can safely sit back and wait until the day they decide to follow your "copy and paste" youtube pyramid selling scheme. My point - in case that truly eluded you - is that the rock n roll hall of fame means even less than the Academy Awards these days, who seemingly hand out their Oscars on a whim on far too many occasions, so whether Kate Bush ever ends up in this "hall of fame" is irrelevant. So what is *your* point anyway?

Because of Kate's indirect connection to David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, snarky comments on other videos say "It's who you know" vs "It's what you know". I can say, quite accurately, it is both. The 'who' is exemplified by Kate's hug with Hanna, her mother in this video. That, plus her influences by her musical father and her brothers, is all the 'who' she ever needed to succeed. Mr. Gilmour was only the most gracious catalyst to 'what' Kate can do. We are blessed to have Kate's genius amongst us.

Well put! Her talent was meant to surface, it had to, it’s that original. We all have our “connections,” and not one of us has “gotten” to where we are all on our own, good or bad.

the chorus of this songs is on of my favorite moments in song. the way it transitions almost like they are waiting and then "1,2,3,1, ready, go!" and they are off like waiting for the drop before waiting for the drop was a thing.

Assuming that you do like "oddballs" and having noticed (by visiting your channel) that you also listen to some metal, I wonder if you might like the album "Contentum" by the Norwegian band Atrox. The vocal performance on that album reminds me of Kate Bush in her most experimental phase (thus "The Dreaming") mixed with a bit of Nina Hagen and some oriental influences. If you are curious, I'd suggest the song "Sultry Air" - one of my four favourite songs on that album.

I have only started listening to Kate about 1 year ago. I never thought I would ever be so absolutely taken with anybody, and I love music, it's always been a big part of my life. Kate is beyond Artist, I see it in your eyes she is really a very good person she is so unbelievably humbled, shy, sweet, and whether she knows it or not I believe that she's a messenger of light just like so many other artists but for some reason she really gets to she literally cheers me up and it's odd because I have never met her but I've never met anybody like me and her lyrics even though so many years ago I know are empathetic nature because it's my own she made me feel less alone and I really wish I could get a chance to say thank you for at work for her did you see that for some reason because she deserves it. I couldn't believe I had never heard about her considering my mother had me listening to Floyd since I was 2 butt to be honest if I had really listened before last year I would have never really understood all of those elusive lyrics I Love suspended in gaffa because I'll never forget when I just got what the lyrics met . she's kind of like the David Lynch of music a lot of people aren't going to understand and it's not something that can be explained it's not about being on the inside or being you smarter it's about something that really people find because it's not spoken publicly about and really it's not common knowledge the only people who really know where the people who really really seek and most people don't even know there's something to search for..... what really gets me is she wrote those songs most of them be early as as young as twelve years old 13 that is truly unbelievable she really helps me and I'm sure so many others cuz there's not a lot of us we're kind of the recluse because people never see things the same way that we do always the black sheep most of us never knowing why. she's a messenger for all of us, Elton John put it perfectly when he said that she is the most beautiful mystery :-)

Oh my god I am the exact same! I started listening to her in December last year - got the dreaming album after knowing all the hits since I can remember and I remember listening to it on spotify as I was going to sleep and the demonic "EEEaaawww" noises on "get out of my house" woke me up absolutely terrified. I listened to the album over and over again the next day on the way to a job interview (which I aced woo) and it took me so long to digest the whole thing..from there it was nothing but love; she is one of those artists that take you away from your real life and creates magical worlds to feast your mind on. I want to thank her too, I dream of being a kate bush impersonation act one day now and you can tell that she doesn't realise just how amazing a human being she is

I discovered her in december 2 years ago (funny how everyone discovered her in december). It was late at night (I had a hard time handling my depression) when I heard Moving for the first time. It was so different from all the things I heard before. It was strange, it was mystic and so I tried to listen to every of her songs I could find. I also love her video clips and I was absolutely fascinated by Running up that hill and cloudbusting. I also started reading every book or poem that inspired her to write her songs. It's kind of an addiction and still feels like a theatrical journey when I enjoy her work. I am glad that everyone here seems to feel the same about this wonderful lady. And Sean Carter congrats that you got the job :-)

Thanks for the congrats, I like to think kate is at least partially responsible :)

The cut, the lighting, the sand, the facial angle and confident expression with the blinking of the eye, and the slow zooming out, with that particular piece of the music, at 0:12 creates a very VERY epic portrait to me, and a feeling, and its interrupted quite soon which the choreography, but that particular moment I find to be very special.

Facing recent loss in my life, I can say that this is a powerful poetry. It flows down warmly like a nice cup of coffee - an empathy of understanding. This song always makes me smile. I first heard it in 2009 (I was 19) when the band “Ra Ra Riot” did a cover. I remember my girlfriend at the time sending me a text saying something like “Ra Ra Riot didn’t write suspended in Gaffa! Here’s the original” and sent me a link. I remember thinking “Oh wow. This is like. Really strange” but don’t get too mad, I was a 19 year old punk rocker living in Winnipeg. I wasn’t ready! 3 years later, I found the album in a record store and did not hesitate to bring it home. So I could play it for my girlfriend. Same one who introduced me to Kate. That record changed my perspective and I fell absolutely in love with the music. And then the videos, and all live performances I could find online. Which isn’t many. But I understand why. I think. Anyways. That’s my experience. I’m a huge fan, I’m 32 now. I have every record. And I see this video differently now, in that I can actually appreciate it!
