think she’s rlly similar to pj harvey (and yes definitely bjork, and ellie from wolf alice said she was really inspired by her for blues weekend)! pj definitely has got the same ‘cool woman singing about being english in an experimental and sometimes kind of scary way’ style, especially recommend her album Let England Shake it’s amazing - would be interesting to see how someone could connect with it while not actually being english (kinda assuming by accent srry if that’s wrong lol)!!

This is gonna be a LOOONG comment. I just wanted to give insights into each song for anyone who may not know what they are about. Kate's craziness is ALWAYS purposeful. I like to think of this album as a collection of stories about need, want and desperation. These stories seem as universal as they are specific. It's an album for all of us who have been by tormented by our own demons. 1. Sat in Your Lap: A satire on how the pursuit of knowledge (or anything, really) can seem endless and futile once you actually start your quest. After facing setback after setback, the speaker just wants a shortcut to success. 2. There Goes a Tenner: A showtune-y song (Kate loves theatre) depicting a bank robbery ("tenner" is slang for ten bucks) The robber's going through the plan in his head and imagining how it could all go horribly wrong. 3. Pull Out The Pin: A song about the Vietnam War from the perspective of a Vietcong soldier. The soldier is demonizing his American enemies while proclaiming, "just one thing in it: It's me or him, and I love life!" 4. Suspended in Gaffa: Thematically similar to Sat in Your Lap but decidedly more religious. There are many biblical allusions here. It's about the pursuit of God and how humans always fall short of reaching Him. God asks you to prove your worth to Him, but you just never know if you're doing it right. It's a song about being discouraged with yourself and feeling as if you are helplessly tied to strings while someone else is pulling them (hence the marionette-style music and the gaffer tape metaphor) 5. Leave It Open: It's simply about embracing your weirdness. It imagines human beings as vessals that can either be kept closed or opened. Instead of repressing the strangeness within, the speaker feels it's better to open yourself up to it ("We let the weirdness in" is Kate's manifesto). 6. The Dreaming: It's about the oppression of the Aboriginal people of Australia who have experienced the loss of their sacred habitat, culture and identity at the hands of white settlers. What makes it especially chilling is that it is told from the perspective of the oppressor, with Kate playing the role of a white Australian settler digging for ore as he nonchalantly watches the destruction of Aboriginal lives. The extremely odd-sounding chorus is Kate's attempt to capture a complex, almost impossible to describe Aboriginal concept through her soundscape. The strange chants of "Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-A-a-a-a-a-M-m-m-m-m-Ti-ti-ti-ti-ti-I-i-i-i-i-" are supposed to sound half-human and half-animal because they are making up the word "Dreamtime". "Dreamtime", also known as "The Dreaming", is an English translation of the complex religious, cultural and spiritual worldview belonging to the Australian Aboriginal people. It's very hard to explain or understand as an outsider, but, among other things, it means the beginning of time. In Aboriginal beliefs, the Dreamtime is a state when the Ancestral Spirits (who may be human or animal) made everything -- the land, the animals, the humans, customs and rituals -- and assigned everything its purpose. The white race, of course, disrupted the harmony that the Dreamtime put in place. 7. Night of the Swallow: A masterpiece within a masterpiece. It depicts a heated back-and-forth between an adventurous criminal and his fearful lover. The criminal desperately wants to go on a risky operation that involves flying to Malta ("like a swallow") to pick up some people. The lover, however, is equally desperate to stop her beloved from getting into trouble ("If you go, I'll let the law know!"). Ever felt like someone was holding you back, even if it was out of love? This is a song for you. 8. All The Love: A lament about dying with regrets. Have you ever feared that you may die without either giving or receiving enough love? 9. Houdini: Another character study from Kate. This one's about Houdini the escape artist and his wife, Rosabel. More specifically, it's about Rosabel's belief that even death cannot keep Houdini from her, so she tries to communicate with her dead lover by participating in a seance; it is a success, and she gets to reminisce about the good old days with him. The real Rosabel actually believed she spoke to Houdini's spirit through a similar seance. She later learned she was tricked. 10. Get Out Of My House: Based on the famous film The Shining. I have not seen the film so can't say much, but it gives you a sense of a haunted house. It is also a powerful song about a disturbed mental state and intrusive thoughts.

The Shinning's plot is basically about a recovering alcoholic writer losing his mind when isolated with his family in a hotel so it makes SO MUCH SENSE. It is a perfect portrait of how far psychosis and paranoia can get. In the movie, the main character allows his paranoid thoughts to take over his mind to the point where he becomes unrecognizable both to the viewer and his family, Kate's mutation into a mule/donkey at the end of Get Out of My House is a commentary on that, maybe. Genious woman!

I almost screamed when I saw the title! I was so nervous about what you would think though because my first listen wasn't great...I was so confused, but now it's my favorite album! I'm glad it grew on you when you heard the title track, I knew you would appreciate that one. Understanding the lyrics made me love it so much more, I would explain them all but then I would write an entire essay. I can't even pick favorite songs, they're all standouts! Listen to it with headphones, it will be a totally different experience, you will hear so many more details and it's just way more powerful! This album should make me go insane but it makes me feel more sane, it's like all anger and anxiety inside of me gets released and it's just amazing. I can't believe this was 40 years ago...saying she's ahead of her time isn't even enough. I loved watching this, made my day.

if you're interested in the meaning of the songs, there it is: (yea it's a lot, sorry) - in sat in your lap, kate sings about the humanity's endless search for knowledge, which is often limited by unwillingness to devote the effort necessary to attain it. - there goes a tenner is about a bungled bank robbery as told by a fearful and paranoid perpetrator. - pull out the pin was based on a documentary about the war in vietnam and describes soldiers of the vietcong literally sniffing out their american opponents before killing them. - suspended in gaffa is about seeing something you really want (god in this case), then not being able to see or experience it ever again. - about leave it open, kate said "like cups, we are filled up and emptied with feelings, emotions, vessels breathing in, breathing out. this song is about being open and shut to stimuli at the right times. often we have closed minds and open mouths when perhaps we should have open minds and shut mouths." - the dreaming is about the destruction of aboriginal homelands by white australians in their quest for weapons-grade uranium. - night of the swallow is about a smuggler planning his next clandestine journey and kate taking on the role of his lover, who begs him not to go. - all the love is about how sometimes we hide our feeling and how that leads us to feel alone. - houdini was inspired by harry houdini, the escape artist who became known as the "handcuff king" at the beginning of the 20th century. in the song, the keys to his chains were passed on to him by his wife during a kiss. - talking about get out of my house, kate said "the house which is really a human being, has been shut up - locked and bolted, to stop any outside forces from entering. The person has been hurt and has decided to keep everybody out. they plant a 'concierge' at the front door to stop any determined callers from passing, but the thing has got into the house upstairs. it's descending in the lift, and now it approaches the door of the room that you're hiding in. you're cornered, there's no way out, so you turn into a bird and fly away, but the thing changes shape, too. you change, it changes; you can't escape, so you turn around and face it, scare it away.

The craziest thing about Kate Bush is that she gets to be THAT good at singing, writing and producing. All seperate skills and yet she has mastered them all. She can do anything with that voice, anything with that pen and, as you heard, anything with her production. Who else even compares? She never even had a co-writer and only had a co-producer once. She also plays the piano fabulously and dances impressively in her own odd way. I wonder how it feels to be that talented. Feeling very "Sat in Your Lap" right now.

Houdini was an escape artist, before almost every trick (unbeknownst to the audience) his wife would pass him the key by mouth through a kiss. That’s why she says that line in the song and also that’s the inspiration for the albums cover. he also famously didn’t believe in psychics. So before he died, he and his wife made a secret code so she could prove any mediums pretending to contact Houdini where false, however one of the medians she went to knew the code and it blew her mind.

I bought this album when it first released, having been an ardent Kate fan since 1978. I took it home, all excited, played it and thought 'What the hell? What a disappointment! It was just so different to anything that came before. It took a more mature me to appreciate the sheer brilliance of the writing, performing and production of this album. It was ahead of its time, but is now a mirror to Kate's extraordinary talent.

I believe the song you were trying to remember which says "hello" in it is "Waking The Witch" from Hounds Of Love. Also, she did say that the title track of The Dreaming is about Dreamtime, and she even named the instrumental version of the song "Dreamtime" and put it as a B-Side on The Dreaming 7" Single back in 1982.

Oh dear I would not have recommended this album to someone who's new to her music but glad you could appreciate it for it's uniqueness and creativity at least. I think you should continue going through her discography backwards from here so Never for ever, Lionheart and then her debut album The kick inside. Those are my favourite Kate albums, cool and unique but less chaotic than The Dreaming.

During the part of Suspended in Gaffa where she says “I won’t open boxes that I am told not to i’m not a Pandora” you seemed sort of confused by the line. She is referring to a greek mythological story. In this story a woman named Pandora opens a jar left in her care containing sickness, death and many other unspecified evil things. Because of this story the saying “To open a Pandora’s box” means to do something which will cause unforeseen problems. Btw: Loved this video! This is my favorite album of Kate’s and it is so interesting to see someone’s raw reactions! :)

Personally, thoroughly enjoyed your reaction because it reminds me like so many of us on how confused we were on first listen! The solution- Dig deeper! She gives you rabbit holes in each song to dive too. The magic aside from her production (which she did entirely herself this album) is absolutely the lyricism! So definitely don't be afraid of the lyrics. Read as you go along and the appreciation will only grow. The seed is already in your mind. You covered her most weirdest album- it only goes UP from here, my friend. My next suggestion is either Never for Ever or The Sensual World. @@bennshouts I doubt you'll get to Aerial (2005) anytime soon, so I guess I can tell you what this washing machine business is about: On that album, Kate has a song called Mrs. Bartolozzi, which is about a woman doing laundry. The chorus is literally just her singing the words "washing machine" a bunch of times. It sounds ridiculous, but it's actually genius-level songwriting, because the song is actually not about doing laundry at all. There's subtext in there, and she leaves it up to you to find out what it is. One of my favorite songs from that masterpiece of an album.

Awesome album! On the surface it's absolutely bonkers and kind of hard to grasp, but something about it keeps pulling me back and then the repeated listens really reveal the hidden hooks.

I love this album but it is not usually where I start someone on their Kate journey. To put this album in context for Kate: She started being directly involved in production on her third album - 'Never for Ever' (co-produced) - with 'The Dreaming' she took full control as producer. Also, around the time of 'Never for Ever', she was introduced to the Fairlight CMI synthesizer/sampler while working with Peter Gabriel on one of his albums. She used it somewhat on 'Never for Ever' but experimented with it and used it extensively on 'The Dreaming'. One reason I consider 'The Dreaming' so important is that the influence of that experimentation is clearly seen in her future work including the more accessible 'Hounds of Love' album which followed The Dreaming. Lastly, the high cost of the studio time for Never for Ever and The Dreaming led her to build her own private studio so that she could experiment and produce music at her own pace. She also purchased her own Fairlight (not a cheap piece of equipment - costing somewhere around $30,000 at the time). I think that this album really helped Kate develop even more fully as her own artist - taking full control, not only lyrically and musically, but also with production and technology and with the means and determination to produce music at her own pace without being pressured by others to keep outputting music as if she were a hamster on a hamster wheel. As much as i, a fan, wish we got more, I think we get her best because she is in full control.

I really hope you researched the meanings to each song after this because it's actually very lyrically brilliant. It's psychological, religious, and historically unbiased. She often writes songs from other peoples perspectives and tries to go into their minds. She doesn't judge. This album is very broad. She has a mix of everything. It's the most creative. I would love to see you react to the album before this one called Never for Ever. Its another one with so much creativity and story telling. Its also very war shrouded. One of the songs is literally from the perspective of a baby in the womb during a nuclear war 😂

Her first self produced record, definitly a trial run for Hounds of Love isnt it? She has said in an interview she was high while making this record, Sat In Lap and Gaffa are about wanting knowledge and having all kinds of experiences, Get out of my House is about Stephen Kings book The Shining, Pull out the pin is about the vietnam war but from the pov of a Vietnamese soldier, hope this helps

This is definitely my favourite album by Kate Bush (if the entire "Hounds of Love"-album was in the vein of "The Ninth Wave", it might be a draw), though I first bought it (and all her other albums released by then) 8 years after I had heard "Sat in Your Lap", "Suspended in Gaffa" and "The Dreaming" when they were in the charts on the radio. In your reply to one comment you wrote "I love the weirdos". If you really do, I've got two recommendations. The first one is the album "Contentum" by the Norwegian Progressive/Avantgarde Metal band Atrox. The vocals of their singer Monika Edvardsen (who left the band in 2004) on that album reminded me of Kate Bush in her most experimental phase mixed with a bit of the craziness of Nina Hagen and some oriental influences as regards some of the vocal lines. I think the song "Sultry Air" is a good example of what I mean: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2Gpo4uJjMufb9k There are also songs with more moderate vocal lines, whereas the craziest parts are probably to be heard in "Lizard Dance". Monika also painted the surrealistic album cover and wrote nearly all the lyrics on that album. In case you generally don't do metal on your channel, you could still try the one-off project Tactile Gemma and their eponymous album. It was a project consisting of one of the guitarists of Atrox, Monika Edvardsen and her sister Ann-Mari Edvardsen (who had been the the singer of the Norwegian band The 3rd and the Mortal from 1995-1997), but the latter is only featured on some of the songs. The music by Tactile Gemma is mostly based on programming, synths and samples. I recommend to try the song "Creepy-Crawlies" (whose lyrics would perfectly go along with a little animation-movie): kzbin.info/www/bejne/apTNm3h_r850hNk (Note: This song only features Monika Edvardsen on vocals.) Kate Bush-related fun fact concerning Monikas's sister Ann-Mari: She was the guest-vocalist on a cover version of "Cloudbusting" by the Italian metal band Novembre: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eX2pfJ6JoL1soNU (I don't know why the clip is 2 1/2 minutes longer than the actual song.) If you want something perhaps even crazier, I recommend the albums "Naked Spirit" and "Who Stole the Sky?" by Sainkho Namtchylak. She has done a lot more albums, but these are those I'm most familiar with. She has a very wide vocal range and sometimes also practices throat singing. "Naked Spirit" focusses mostly on her voice and is heading in a more "spiritual" direction, whereas "Who Stole the Sky?" has a more modern sound. I don't know if these clips are safe for reactions, because so far, no-one has done a reaction video to any of the artists mentioned above, probably because they are too unknown (especially Atrox and Tactile Gemma) or too weird, at least for people who recommend songs for reaction videos. Maybe I'm wrong, but I could imagine that people who rank "The Dreaming" very high among their favourite albums because of Kate's unusual vocal work are those most likely to enjoy Tactile Gemma, Atrox (if they don't mind metal) and - maybe - also Sainkho Namtchylak.

There is nothing sacred about playing the didgeridoo but what you'll find interesting is that on the remaster version of the song, the name of the didgeridoo player is mysteriously missing. If you have the original release, you'll see it is Rolf Harris (of "Tie me kangaroo down" fame) who was convicted for pedophilia.

This is my favourite Kate Bush album, but yeah it is a ride! As an Australian, you must have had some mixed feelings with “The Dreaming”. Dreamtime was spelled out during the song if you listen. One thing is that the actual reaction was rather disjointed because of the skips.
