Side 2 is a 7 song suite entitled "The Ninth Wave," which is a major MASTERPIECE of progressive/conceptual music. The narrative is the story of a shipwrecked woman who is floating alone at sea in the night, struggling to survive. She tries to stay awake, but slips in and out of consciousness. Most of the songs are her hallucinations / nightmares concerning her peril during her periods of unconsciousness. "Dream of Sheep" is her struggle to stay awake. As she succumbs, "Under Ice" is a nightmare about seeing herself trapped under ice. As she tries to wake up "Waking the Witch" is a nightmare where she is being accused of being a witch, when they used to tie chains around the accused's legs and throw them in the water to see if they would float (if they sank and drowned they were guilty). "Watching You Without Me" is her hallucination of seeing her family at home doing their everyday things, while they are thinking she is just late getting home and are unaware of her life and death struggle. "Jig of Life" is another dream where Kate's future self tries to tell her to stay alive and to fight for her life and for her future children that will not be if she succumbs to death. "Hello Earth" is the lowest point of her struggle where she looks up at the night sky and imagines herself looking down upon the black vastness of the ocean where she is only a tiny speck - she beings to succumb to her fate, when....."The Morning Fog" is her helicopter rescue and redemption from death, where she has a new appreciation of life and reaffirms her heightened love for her family.

I love Kate so much, she literally changed my life. This album was so groundbreaking. SHE PRODUCED IT ALL! Isn't that insane? The first songs are more conventional and but still so unique, Cloudbusting is one of my favorite songs ever and I also love Mother Stands for Comfort so much. I think they will definitely grow on you! With And Dream of Sheep starts a conceptual suite called The Ninth Wave about a woman drifting alone in the sea at night. Listen to it with headphones and close your eyes! I literally can't pick a favorite song, but I love And Dream of Sheep, Jig of Life and Hello Earth the most I think. This album is such a journey. She's a genius. Can't wait to see you react to her other albums! Watching a Kate Bush fan being born is so beautiful, almost brings tears to my eyes❤️

Side 2 is a single story, as mentioned below. The tracks reflect the thoughts, fears, dreams and hallucinations of the woman floating in the ocean awaiting rescue. It is iconic in its conceptualisation and its effectiveness is greatly enhanced by a straight listen-through of the whole side. Incidentally, though Kate is English, her mother had Irish roots and her older brother Paddy was always into regional music and obscure instruments. Kate was greatly influenced by the sounds she heard growing up.

She talked about wanting to turn The Ninth Wave into a film when the album was originally released, but the record label wouldn't put any money on a project like that, since none of the songs on side B was considered commercial enough to be released as a single (all of side A was, except Mother Stands for Comfort). Nowadays, artists release entire visual albums as if it were no big deal. In 2014, after not performing a full concert since 1979, Kate finally got the chance to perform the entirety of The Ninth Wave live on stage, and it was just as theatrical, quirky and magical as you could expect from her.

So from And dream and sheep onwards it would have been side B of the vinyl and it’s the story of a woman who has fallen overboard and she’s floating in the ocean shifting from sleep to waking trying to stay alive until she’s saved. So she drifts in and out of dreams. It’s a masterpiece. That second half is called the Ninth Wave. (I’m writing this comment as I’m watching the video so maybe at the end you’ll talk about it so oops if that’s the case 😂 🙊)

@@bennshouts you’re welcome! In the early 2000s she did an album named Aerial with a similar structure. One side is like pop/“regular” songs and the other side is a concept album like the Ninth Wave but different story. It’s not as intense as the ninth wave, but it’s beautiful nonetheless.

You essentially listened to two albums in this video. The first five was just stand alone songs linked with the theme of love. The rest was The Ninth Wave about a woman lost at sea and having dreams of past (witch), present (a ghost in the room after she’s rescued) and future (old woman). It ends with her seeing the storm that hit her ship from space and finally regaining consciousness.

Some Kate Bush career highlights: -- Kate became a very popular star right out the gate with the success of her first single "Wuthering Heights," making her the first female musician to score a UK number 1 with a self-written song. -- She is the first singer to employ a rudimentary version of the wireless headset microphone in her acclaimed 1979 tour "The Tour of Life" -- the technology was improvised with the help of a wire hanger to accommodate her wish to dance as she sang. -- Her 1980 album Never for Ever became the first number 1 album by a female artist in the UK. -Her 1984 album Hounds of Love is often cited as one of the best albums ever. Outlets to have done so include Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, NPR and Q Magazine. -- Despite staying away from the limelight, she still enjoys a substantial fan following. There's something called "The Most Wuthering Heights Day Ever" -- a niche worldwide event where Kate fans from around the world dress up as her and perform the choreography of her "Wuthering Heights" music video. -- After 1979, she never toured again. When she marked her comeback to live performance with a concert residency at Hammersmith Apollo in 2014,. the tickets were sold out within 15 mins.

Hello Earth - my absolute fave on the album but the whole Ninth Wave is incredible. You will clearly LOVE her previous album The Dreaming as the whole thing is experimental like the Ninth Wave. Also recommend to you her album This Sensual World (my personal favourite). But my all-time favourite Kate Bush song is one rarely mentioned and has had no reactions. It’s called “The Kick Inside” and it’s the final track from her first album (also celles The Kick Inside) and it’s an utterly devastating and genius way to end an album (and what a debut album it is!). Have fun!!!

The first half and second half are considered 2 different works. The second half is called "The Ninth Wave" and starts with Dream of Sheep. I appreciate your honest first impressions. It can be thrilling to witness people listening to geniuses like Kate, Tori Amos, Fiona Apple and Joni Mitchell for the first time because all can be acquired tastes and a little off putting at first, but with an indefinable allure-and then they stand apart from and above most other musical artists. I think of Kate as an ingenius performance artist and fiction writer and of Tori's music as inventive, incisive literature-poetry and essays channeled through music.

Cloudbusting is about Wilhelm Reich. He was a renowned physicist and you probably heard about him in school. His son, Peter Reich released a book telling the story of a machine his father built that could gather the clouds and make it rain. The government found out and he was arrested and sadly died in prison. People did not believe Peter when the book first came out, they thought he was just trying to make money off his father's name. Kate found the book later, and didn't have any skeptical feelings, she only saw the magic of their relationship, so she wrote the song. What's more interesting is that since the song was released, photos and other proof have come out that it was true and the machine did really exist. The music video tells the story beautifully.

Kate paved the way for a lot of modern music. Not only in terms of female artists, but in terms of a musician writing, playing instruments (not all, obviously!) and producing songs and albums by themselves. But mainly in her use of the Fairlight computer sampler (invented in Australia.) The first sampler in existence used by a number of very famous musicians - but Kate really used it in creative ways in terms of production. Since then sampling has become the norm in making music. I’m not saying she invented sampling, but what she and Peter Gabriel did in terms of creative sampling really set the bar for the future. She’d completely disagree of course, being the wonderful woman she is. But I don’t care. Bloody genius.

So, Waking the Witch scared you while you were awake... Imagine if you were sleeping! Years ago when I lived in NYC, I was napping on the train ride home when this song came on and scared the shit out of me 😂 My eyes popped open and it took me a few seconds to gather myself and realize it was my music and not some random dude telling me to wake up 🤣
