Kate very rarely talks directly about her own life in song, so she is free to find inspiration in films and literature, and take a very oblique look at scenarios that other artists would never imagine touching. I liken her to a gifted actress, and she inhabits all her characters with such a deep degree of empathy. Just like an actor who has to play a villain, they need to find some hint of humanity in them, and like all great actors playing the outsider they are the most intriguing and often powerful opportunities to reflect back on our own darker selves. No matter how unsympathetic and hard to justify they may be, Kate tries to look at the world through their eyes, and is always non-judgemental about them. This also goes for her own personal attitude to men, she doesn't see them as threatening or a challenge, but she has always appeared to have complete belief she is a total unquestionable equal. Luckily the men in her life have all been unswervingly supportive of her talent from a very young age, and she has had that quiet determination ever since. She creates at her own pace without commercial pressures, and more and more managed to keep a distance from the usual music circus of self- promotion and stardom. Her work speaks for itself, she has achieved what she wants in her career without any compromise but with charm and humility, genuinely pleasantly pleased by, but yet never failing to be surprised at, how loved she is by her adoring fans. Despite being clearly a beautiful and sensual woman she doesn't see her gender specifically as important to her music, she doesn't feel she speaks for women any more than she does for men, and unless it's in a rare role of one of her characters you won't find Kate expressing any bitterness. You are on a wonderful journey through her catalogue, savour it, no need to rush ahead, each album will make more sense in order and it only gets more intriguing and mesmerising as they progress.

@@generationgapreacts Kate first had been obliged to take up the violin, since the school that she went to had a rule that each pupil had to learn to play a musical instrument. Kate started playing piano of her own accord by around 12 years old to accompany her brother Paddy during his violin practice. Then she began to use an old beaten up honky-tonk piano when writing songs, between signing for EMI and putting together her first album, Kate was encouraged to take some formal piano playing lessons as EMI thought that Kate needed to sharpen up her playing skills, which was fair enough considering that Kate was self taught there were bound to be some "rough edges". Regarding the next album Lionheart, I do have a suggestion for a non-single track from that album, a song that I feel is somewhat under appreciated called "Coffee Homeground"

You should check ot the Dutch tv special performance of this and other songs from the kick inside. It was done at the Efteling theme park in Holland, they had a grave stone with her name on it originally at the Haunted house attraction.

For some reason, this is probaly the only Kate Bush song that I never really got into. I never even knew what it was about till I just looked it up. I guess it just doesn't do it for me musically, as a song, although her voice is stunning as usual. Regarding the subject matter. I just admire Kate's exploration of meaning and empathy in all human experience.

There's a beauty and sadness within here music. She was a very private person but at the same time she was very expressive. To me she sang her life story through here music and was private about it at the same time. I have had all her albums from the 70s and therein. This lady is an absolute treasure.

Kate Bush is one of those artists that people either get or don't get. The ones that get her really love her. Been a fan since the 80s and even as a teenager I just got her. I didn't have any friends that liked her enough to share her with, so reaction videos like yours kind of make up for that. I get the impression your mom doesn't get her. lol There's a 1986 version of Wuthering Heights that she might like better. Kate's voice had matured by then and isn't quite as screechy (my husband's words).

Yes to the official music videos for ‘Wow’ and ‘Hammer Horror’. The BBC Special performance of ‘Symphony in Blue’ is very good, but also too is the 4K remastered video of this song from her 1979 tour - ‘Kate Bush - In Search of Peter Pan/Symphony in Blue -LIVE IN MANCHESTER 1979’. ‘Symphony…’ starts at 5.00 on this 2-song video. Actually you might want to play the full 9.44 video. Peter Pan is a nice song sung from a child’s perspective. There are far too few good quality videos from Kate’s tour. They should be used whenever possible.

I'm the same age as her, grew up listening to her music. Yes, she was advanced for her age, but she grew up around adults. Her brother, John Carder (Jay) is about 14 years older than her, and Paddy is 6 years older. The father was a doctor and the mother a nurse. They were a bit bohemian intellectual types, so she was exposed to all sorts of "ideas" at home. What you call research was probably just from conversations with older groups or stuff already lying around the house. In those years, I think artists had more freedom to explore many themes without being accused of being a "phobe" or a "perv". In terms of music, the Brits were at the top of their game in those days, if you read lyrics from Genesis albums (with Peter Gabriel) or Supertramp, Pink Floyd, _Yes_, Bowie, all those guys from around that period, they were very clever and included a lot of artistic and literary references. One of the reasons her songs work is that she doesn't judge the characters she is writing about, she empathizes, she understands but she doesn't judge.

Great reaction to a brilliant song - Kate is a fearless songwriter and performer. By the way, Babooshka is from her third album, "Never Forever." I would highly recommend these off of Lionheart: Wow, Hammer Horror, and Symphony In Blue - and you should definitely react to her official videos for Wow and especially Hammer Horror (her dance routine is incredible - and of course when you get to her third album Kate's video for Babooshka is iconic ). Their is also a video of her performing Symphony In Blue from her Christmas TV special.

Not because you will be introduced to the Swordsmistress of Chaos (don't worry you'll know when the time comes!) but because of her performance as the veiled lady - her eyes, hands, how she sings parts like "strange delight" and "incognito" and her movements: oh and yes, of course the Swordsmistress of Chaos (don't worry you'll know when the time comes!) also makes great use of eyes and movement, but for me it is the veiled sections that make the video (yes I know this makes me very old).

"The Kick Inside" is so moving. It's about an obviously controversial situation, but it's so beautiful. You can't help but feel the love and the dark determination behind the words. Kate is a genius in so many ways. I've loved her music since she released "Hounds of Love". She's always brave and utterly dedicated to her own vision, and her music is very visceral and cerebral at the same time. She has a way of reaching her darkness into your own and teasing both of them out into the light. Your words came out beautifully. Don't worry. When you get to "Lionheart", please don't skip "In the Warm Room". It's beautiful and impactful. (My other favorites from the second album are "In Search of Peter Pan" and "Oh England My Lionheart."

Here, Kate appears almost fully formed on a debut album with material written from ages 13-19. This was a carefully crafted reaction to Kate's song considering how triggering its subject matter can be. In an age that claims freedom of speech, I'm quite amused by just how little we can say. The original folktale that the song is based upon has the brother killing his sister when he learns she is pregnant with his child. What is remarkable about Kate's version is that, in line with her embrace of womanhood and its empowerment, the character in The Kick Inside takes control of her fate rather than having it decided by a man. A theme more relevant today than when the song was written!

The artist name is Happy Rhodes and she did a lot of her songs in 80s as well. She is sadly extremely obscure, but very talented. Don't worry the words coming out of your mouth are more coherent than I could ever manage (and better than a lot of other reactors on KZbin manage to russle together). I can understand that for the purposes of reacting to Kate Bush you can't react to every song on every album but I would encourage you, after you've gone through your Kate Bush reactions, to go back and listen to the whole album The Kick Inside in your own time as imo there isn't a bad song on and it does flow together to make a coherent whole (not sure how it does but it does indeed do that) I would just add that it's hugely appreciated that your taking the time to visit the lesser known songs as they are all treasured by fans and that to my mind Kate has the sensibilities of a novelist or a classical music composer in that she takes her time to explore emotions/themes that others bypass and that to me is a big part of her attraction.

A beautiful song about a tragic situation, as you said. It’s actually inspired by a traditional Irish song (in fact a number of trad songs) called Lucy Wan. Songs of illicit love, murder and suicide are very common in Irish, English and Scottish traditional music, and Kate does a marvelous job in modernizing the theme. The shifts in the pacing and delivery are intentionally unsettling, but also evoking considerable sadness. Lovely reaction, thanks. I just had to say though, who ends their debut album with the words "Ooh by the time you read this..."? That was a stunningly brave decision, and a great one, it definitely left us wanting more. I was a loner in my teens, just when those first 2 albums came out. I lived next to a loch (a Scottish lake) and I regularly went for long solitary walks round the loch, lugging my portable (!) tape player with a C90 tape with one album on each side, playing them over and over, those songs all mean a lot to me, it's not an understatement to say they kept me alive. I was struggling with being gay (this was the 1970s, in a rural place, and it *was* a struggle) so the song Kashka From Baghdad hit home and reassured me that another life was possible, out there somewhere...

Thanks for following up on the recommendations! If you're going on to Lionheart, then "Wow" and "Hammer Horror" are the obvious choices. Kate wasn't happy with Lionheart, as she was pushed into releasing a 2nd album sooner than she would have liked by her record company, but it still has some good tracks. Apart from the two already mentioned, "In the Warm Room" is worth a listen, as is "Kashka from Baghdad", which she was actually allowed to perform on a children's TV programme, something which would unfortunately cause a fit of hysteria now. And btw, "Babooshka" is from her 3rd album, Never for Ever.

Thank you very much for reacting. I'm a massive Kate Bush fan but haven't taken time to listen to this track. Kate Bush is becoming one of my favourite artists. I really like your clever and heartfelt reactions and glad to see you seem to really dive into Kate Bush's fantastic world. Actually she was even younger when she wrote "The Kick Inside" (about 15 or 16 as the song already belongs to her teenage demos), so yes, her maturity and wit even now sounds impressive. Now you're moving forward "Lionheart", it should be better for you to react first to her videos "Wow" and "Hammer Horror" which are very theatrical, typically in the style of KB and then every recommendation I read here was very relevant and wise (anyway, for me "Lionheart" is a faultless album) BUT "Coffee Homeground" will definitely drive you into something different: theatrical, very excentric and original, almost ridiculous, funny and dramatic at the same time and her voice on it is incredible. "Kashka from Baghdad" is also one not to miss for it's controversial (at the time) subject matter. Actually, all the songs on this album are insanely good and for me, it's on this album her voice was at it's purest tone. "Lionheart" is commonly overlooked and considered as one of her weakest albums, I could never understand that, everything on it is amazingly clever and original. Can't wait for your reactions... Dear Generation Gap, The term 'etherial' rather should be coined 'openness' I believe, openness to other peoples' input into the general intellectual discourse. Also, openness from the part of the artist, in this case Kate Bush, openness from those myriad of fans in the late 70's that took artists like this to their hearts, and openness on from you, from another era in world history, which lookins at this type of music from another perspective than it was done about 45 years ago, but also with the courage to review this although based in the bleak and disastrous 2020's polarised environment. Kate Bush would not have stood a chance to reach out like this if she had tried today. Europe (and probably also the US) was in the 70's a place where it was very much OK to be different, as long as you were sincere and had some kind of intellectual and sensory awareness and novelty, and muscial quality, to submit for general scrutiny. Hence the possibility for a music album like 'The Kick Inside' to be a chart buster would be close to null today. Good on you for such a nice piece of reaction. Good also on you and your mother also for your great reaction 'club'. I am looking forward to see what will happen next. Greetings from Sweden!

Kate Bush has the voice, that makes the nails down a chalkboard seem tolerable. It's hard to think of a worst noise. Her voice makes me want to run away, from it's source of transmission. It's a cat being stepped on.

You should definitely listen to Eva Cassidy made famous in the UK by the radio 2 presenter Terry Wogan. This really IS a beautiful song: dark and beautiful. You are so right to say that no single word can really sum up exactly how to describe or define Kate's music. One word that does need to be included in how to try to describe her is "pathos." In some of her songs, often dealing with dark or difficult themes, she manages to communicate a pathos in them that makes even incredibly challenging themes or images strangely beautiful. You will come across this over and over again, especially when it comes to death, or those who have died (even if you don't agree with the views or beliefs she expresses, she writes about these things and sings about them beautifully). I know you are moving on to "Lionheart." And I am really looking forward to you take on it. You will react to (and probably should because it is the biggest song on it) "Wow." You kinda have to (and it does or maybe does or maybe doesn't include one her naughty lyrics [ I think it does!!]). But while it has many detractors (The Guardian newspaper called it "a bit of a stinker" www.theguardian.com/music/2012/jan/25/old-music-kate-bush-wow ), I think there are some genuinely lovely tracks on it: the first five tracks are (to me at least) very strong, "The Warm Room" is essential listening, a study in adult womanhood, written to men and for men (that still somehow makes a man like me shift very uneasily in his seat every time I hear it). I also like "Coffe Homeground." You might well react to "Hammer Horror" - not a favourite of mine, but a lot of KB fans like it. As you get ready to move on from "The Kick Inside" there are some songs that I are well worth circling back to (maybe when you get a couple or three songs into "The Dreaming") and if you do "James and the cold Gun" "Oh to be in Love" and "Feel It" are well worth a revisit. But this has been another really thoughtful reaction video. It is great to see someone bond with Kate's music as you seem to have. Thanks for a great video.

I found the kick inside on vinyl and will be purchasing that then just listening from front to back on my own finally! I will do that same process after finishing videos from her next albums

Incest is what this is about. It's not that hard to discuss at all. She killed both herself and their unborn child. What a fantastic issue to put to words and music. So brave for the very young Kate, I love her always. Brilliant album but the Hounds of Love topped it. I doubt we will meet unless the sun and the moon meet on yon hill.
