You can kind of train snakes, but only in very limited ways "you get fed in this corner" kind of stuff. You can train turtles quite a bit, and they do recognize their owners. But that will not stop a snapping turtle from snapping at the hand that feeds it! On the other hand, when I worked with Sonoran Desert Tortoises, they all tried to bite the orange parts of my shoes. So provided the intruder is wearing orange shoes, they may be effective.

My experience with classroom Rat and Corn snakes is that 1) When you dangle the mouse (thawed and warmed) in front of them, their brains take a little moment to figure out "FOOOOOOD!" but then they are a Blur Of Chomp. 2) They will seek out warm spaces, generally inside your shirt during the first -of-the-year classroom introduction, in front of 30 junior high kids. 3) they seemed to always take three days to digest the mouse. If a kid puts them on a desk that third day, the snake will immediately "lighten the load" to try to escape. "Cleanup in Aisle 1, dissolved mouse bones."4.) Having a classroom snake is the secret to getting the most annoying child (during class) to come in and beg to hold it every day before school. 5.) Having a classroom snake is an insult to Native American students, which I didn't know at the time. Belated apologies. There's a reason we take courses on cultural diversity.

I live surrounded by woods, and have a good-sized Blacksnake population. Had a horrible mouse problem until the snakes decided to move in closer - under 3 porches and one big one in the garage. No more mice. Now, the only annoyance is the big one knocking the electric eye off its bracket so the door opener gets confused. Small issue compared to rodents!
