@@dr.janicedodds7843 Me too. My dad died in 1998, and this song always makes me think of him. It's rare to find a song that exactly encapsulates your deepest feelings, but Kate seems to manage it effortlessly. Next time I sing a song for my dad (which I do from time to time) I'll sing it for your dad too.

This song made me cry , when my dad was really poorly , he used to say 'play one of my guitars son ' then he'd be closing his eyes and i'd stop , he'd open them again and say 'why have you stopped son i was listening to that' an make me carry on playing !! these lyrics remind me of that so much ...... and he was broken , i just wish i could of fixed him :( I loved him more than he knew xx

Kate wrote the song - it was about a friend of the family Davy Steele who died and clearly was an influence when she was young. If you want a real tear-jerker then look up "My Young Man" which she wrote about her ex-miner grandfather who was afflicted by Alzheimers. It was penned from her grandmother's perspective. It's what folk does best - melancholy.

I'm so sorry for your loss. This song was written by Kate for a friend of hers Davey Steele, he died in his early 50's. They were both at one time in the Battlefield Band, type in 'the last trip home', Davey wrote this, it was played at his funeral. So you now understand why there is so much emotion here, it's straight from the heart.

Lay me down gently, lay me down low, I fear I am broken, I won't mend I know. There's one thing I ask when the stars light the skies - Who now will sing me lullabies? Oh who now will sing me lullabies? In this big world I'm lonely, for I am but small. Oh angels in Heaven don't you care for me at all? You've heard my heart breaking, for it rang through the skies. So why won't you sing me lullabies? Oh why won't you sing me lullabies? I lay here, I'm weeping, and the stars they have come. I lay here not sleeping, now the long night has begun. The man in the moon, oh he can't help but cry, For there's no one to sing me lullabies. No there's no one to sing me lullabies. So lay me down gently, oh lay me down low, I fear I am broken, I won't mend I know. There's one thing I ask, now the stars light the skies - Who now will sing me lullabies? Oh who now will sing me lullabies? Oh, lullabies... Who will sing me to sleep? Who will sing me to sleep? Who will sing me to sleep? Who will sing me to sleep? Who will sing me to sleep?
