I'm currently doing my MFA in screenwriting and there are lots of varying schools of thought on plotting but I think it's 100% essential honestly. Plotting out the dramatic beats of your series is 100% necessary for the treatment document that you'd pitch along with the pilot script. You don't necessarily have to write it all, but you do have to know what happens. Watch as much GOOD television as possible and read the scripts while you watch - that's my number one piece of advice!

i know this video is from a while ago, but there's always this one quote stuck in my head from an anime i watched as it aired in 2018 called comic girls. i related with my everything to the protagonist - a very socially anxious, deeply insecure girl who believed that even if she wasn't talented in her creative field, it was the only job she felt remotely qualified for, thanks to her years of practice - but it was a quote from her mother, in the last episode, that i now recite whenever i think writing's getting too hard to myself. "do you want to keep trying, even though it's so hard that it's making you cry?" i don't think it's often that media acknowledges how painful it can be to keep doing what you love, even when you feel like you'll never have a future in it, no matter how desperately you might want to. but this anime did it so beautifully and i finally felt like i could actually relate to a protagonist 1000% for once, and not just parts of her. i've rewatched the anime in its entirety at least five times since it aired and i still cry just as much as the first. i'm so beyond thankful for it and the strength it's given me to continue to pursue what i'm passionate about.

Kate Cavanaugh I have a few I can go to, but when I can stay up late, Starbucks is sadly one of the only places. So I try to go earlier in the day if I want a local shop. One near me has a lavender Earl Grey latte and it's heaven. Also! Have you considered doing a week of an entire routine switch up? Bedtime, writing hours, etc....? I find a couple days isn't enough for me as I need to experience something for a few days to realize if I can work certain things in long term. That would prob make for an awesome multi part "I tried writing like" vlog!

Watching you watch your videos gave me this crazy idea. I've seen quite nearly most of your videos but something off the wall is always surely needed. Typically for me to gain better acquisition of the characters I write, I write in their perspective about me. Then I go into a completely distracting zone where I'm forced to focus. Somewhere loud, annoying, somewhere I don't want to be. But don't forget your surroundings can often influence the perspective you're looking for.

One quote that's been motivating me to appreciate life more is from a speech that Kurt Vonnegut gave. He talks about how his uncle used to say "If this isn't nice, I don't know what is" whenever he was enjoying life. So often I only focus on the negative things that happen and forget to be thankful for the good times, and this quote has given me a newfound appreciation for the good!

Very timely experiment. Answering the open question you asked in my last comment about the 9 beat (or plot point) outline. I'm coming to see everything as a special case of 9. Love save the Cat? THOSE 15 are a special case with expansions out of the 9. The funny part is I think the Hero's Journey plot embryos are an intersecting orbital story that Revolves around the plot points as action reaction points to the setpieces of the plot points. May your creative reservoir be in the perpetual path of the deluge!

Maybe I'm just a bad writer but I have never heard of Shonda Rhimes until this video. I'm gonna have to look her up. I love that "disclaimer". It is literally the best and technically accurate. Actors and writers... we all play pretend for a living. I have some short stories that I would be willing to try writing for a different medium. Set them up something like Jim Henson's Storybook Theatre sort of thing. Originally, they were going to be for a podcast, but since I'm going to give youtube a try, I don't think I will really have the time, especially since I've gotten really serious about my art and writing career. Priorities and all that. I would need to do a lot of research before I tried though. I only know how to write stories for reading.

I’ve said most of what I want to say when I commented on your other “I write like...” videos. But how do you have the motivation? 😂 Somedays I barely have enough motivation to write a few words a day, much less writing like someone else + following their routine/schedule. Okay, to be fair, when I get stuck that normally means I need to revaluate what’s happening I the story, but the way you try and hit their hours/word goals for the day, I don’t even know how. Lol.

I've been super unproductive since getting back from Chicago, I just didn't film it! Hahah. So though I like to think I'm capable of getting stuff done, I think the vlogs are definitely a snippet. The daily ones during November will show a more realistic side, probably. (Like when I have my Zero Word Days!) It's also why I can only do these "Tried Writing Likes" once a month or so! It can be exhausting to go off of my own schedule. But it's SO much fun that it's worth it hahah. Just not all the time!

My WIP series was originally a tv series idea I had in film school. I outlined the first season with 21 episodes. Of course, I wanted it to start airing a few years ago otherwise it wouldn't make any sense. I still wanted to tell the story so I started looking into writing it as a book. Another book dystopian series I want to write was another series idea, but I struggled writing the pilot for it because it was very character-driven and I had specific movements in my head and I realized while reading The Hunger Games it might work better as a book. I had to give up the idea of having David Duchovny as the voice and hands of my villain.

I think the reason that there's less focus on money in writing vs screen is that it simply costs less. Like you said, a pilot wasn't shot because of how expensive it would be. There isn't really a good analog for that in writing. Sure, you might decide what to write based on what you think will give you the best amount of money for your time. But you're unlikely to shy away from something due to its expense. I agree that people need to be more realistic about the fact the publishing world is a business but I think the discrepancy is there for a reason. The stakes are much lower in publishing and that makes it more accessible.

Question: do u write screenplays for fun, or do u hope that one day you'll have it on tv?

My favorite quote of all time is 'Goddesses don't speak in whispers, they scream.' from American Horror Story. But after watching your video you're really making me curious about the screenwriting area of writing. I've had other friends say they're screen writers but I didn't want to touch it, but, I do have an old novel that would make a fun TV show. I might be giving it a try in the down time before Nanorwrimo.

YESSSSS. Same. I watch a lot of my friend Becca C. Smith's content and she talks about screenwriting a lot (along with all her novels!) and it's just so incredible. I'd never thought to try it myself before I met her!! It's definitely a fun little side experiment before NaNo. :) AND WHAT A FREAKING QUOTE.

Oh gosh, couldn't imagine screen writing... I have a real problem with my word count, as in: I can't keep my scenes short. :'D Which is a REAL problem, when you want to be a screen writer. XD I mean... with books you have all the time in the world, but with movies and tv shows you have only limited time and you have to be careful, where you spend your time as a writer.

Response to an old video, that noone will see! TV shows are written in 8 act structure, to allow for commercial integration. Dan Harmons Story Circle is an adaptation of the TV 8-act structure.

I've considered writing a screenplay as a first draft of a novel like author Chuck Wendig mentions here: terribleminds.com/ramble/2010/08/17/hate-outlining-start-with-a-screenplay/
