I believe that the yellow needle trees are tamaracks, that will lose their needles on the snow soon leaving a yellow carpet of sunshine( could be wrong...but I see bigger ones in Eastern Oregon while huntng that are similar). Thank you so much for all the beautiful views...your artist eyes are telling. each day is a adventure of new views... Again thank you and blessings. praying that you recover your healthy shortly....

Yes the yellowing trees with needles are Tamaracks, also called Larches. They make for a beautiful fall where they grow.
@MaxZomboni5 жыл бұрын
Judy Brooks That's a good guess, but tamaracks don't grow natively in the Pacific Northwest. They could be western larch. I see a some of the them here on the Oregon Coast. You would never notice them, but they sure stand out this time of the year.
@jimthode5 жыл бұрын
@@MaxZomboni Only western larch and subalpine larch grow in the Pacific Northwest. Larches are commonly called tamaracks, especially by people whose roots are in eastern North America.

Kate, you better check the rules about horseback on the PCT for a thru hike. Another beautiful video. Good Luck, Rick
@KateCloud5 жыл бұрын
Its allowed. The entire trail aside from a few small washed out areas with reroutes is graded for stock animals.
@Lukionest5 жыл бұрын
@@KateCloud I think Richard was referring to the PCT rules for a thru hike as opposed to just the rules regarding which trails horses are allowed on. If horseback riding qualifies as part of a thru hike then that's great and it would be a wonderful way for you to finish that last little section of the hike. Would love to see your videos of that, when it happens.
@MaxZomboni5 жыл бұрын
Lukionest I agree. The horseback ride sounds like a great adventure, but I fail to see how that would meet the requirements of a thru hike. By most definitions a thru hike is a one direction, end-to-end backpacking trip on a long-distance trail. The same thing on horseback is called a thru ride. I can't find any mentions of anyone doing a combination thru hike / thru ride. But I have a feeling it would not impress most hikers, or equestrians either. Maybe Kate can finish the thru hike, then do a horseback ride on some part of the trail. Either way, I'll be watching. :)
@hu_b5 жыл бұрын
I get the feeling she's doing the hike for her own satisfaction and not to satisfy a rules committee. Personally I would walk the last bit if I was in her position but she thought riding a horse sounded like fun so why not.
@mb6921005 жыл бұрын
Richard Ross... I hear what you're thinking. But trying to find one clear, authoritative definition of a thru-hike is like trying to find an Easter egg on the 4th of July. Ask 10 hikers and you'll get 10 different answers. As far as I can tell, neither the PCT Association nor the CDT Coalition post a definition on their websites....maybe a phone call to them would get an answer. But apparently they base their definition on the AT Conservancy's definition of: "a hike of the entire App. Trail in 12 months of less." Wikipedia says: Thru-hiking is to hike an established end-to-end hiking trail or long-distance trail with continuous footsteps in one direction." Therefore, if a hiker wants to put himself under either of those definitions, then he would have to actually "walk" the entire trail to the exclusion of any other form of transportation. But here's the kicker. Neither of those definitions covers all the scenarios, like shelter loops, slack packing or no packing, and so each hiker tends to take the basic definition and modify it to his own needs and desires. Thus, trying to define a thru-hike degenerates into an exercise in futility, endless debates and probably is a waste of time. However, I would encourage every thru-hiker to at least "walk" the entire trail in one year, and to do it continually from end-to-end as far as possible. That way, there would never be an issue of his accomplishment. As far as Feathers is concerned, I have maximum respect for her as a hiker and am one of her strongest supporters, as you are as well. Not all thru-hikers have endured the weather and rigors of the trail as she has. And I never tell another thru-hiker how to hike his own hike, but if we were sitting around the campfire and Feathers asked for my opinion, then I would encourage her to hike that last section and then later do it by horseback. Even though she has already hiked that amount via side trails, by actually walking this last section, no one can ever raise any questions. But however she does it, I will continue to support and encourage her. What's really important is that she completes her journey to her own satisfaction, and that she accomplishes her own goal...not someone else's. Here is a copy the ATC's definition and then an article from the Trek on this subject: How does the ATC define thru-hiking? We define a thru-hike as a hike of the entire A.T. in 12 months or less. What is a 2,000-miler? A "2,000-miler" is a hiker who has walked the entire length of the A.T. and reported his or her hike completion to the ATC. The ATC has been keeping records of thru-hike completions since the A.T. was first completed in 1937. The ATC uses the term "2,000-miler" as a matter of tradition and convenience. When the term was coined, the A.T. was only slightly more than 2,000 miles. Its length changes every year due to pathway relocations. In recognizing 2,000-milers, we don't consider issues such as the sequence, direction, speed or whether one carries a pack. We do expect that persons applying for inclusion in our 2,000-miler records have made an honest effort to walk the entire Trail. A 2,000-miler application form can be found here. Great article from the Trek: thetrek.co/definition-thru-hike/

6:30 ". . . or something." Those trees are larches. And how can a dog "do" the PCT? I thought dogs are prohibited in the national parks and California state parks.

Not all of the PCT is park of a national park. Dogs are allowed on most WA trails including the PCT except for Mt Rainier NP, Olympic NP and North Cascades NP.
@professorsogol58245 жыл бұрын
@@redtango76 I thought that is what I said. If "doing" in "doing the PCT" means a "through hike of" and a "through hike" is defined as walking (or ridding a horse) from one end of the trail to the other, how can a dog "do" it if the dog cannot walk (or ride a horse) over some sections of the trail?
@redtango765 жыл бұрын
@@professorsogol5824 I thought you were referring to the day hikers she passed during this section of trail. People thru hike with dogs however they have people help them when they enter a section that doesn't allow them. Trail Angels, friends and family will pick up the dog and drop it off when they leave the restricted area.To me it seems like a hassle but some people don't mind dealing with the logistics.
