Back in the 40’s, my mother was a nanny for a family that lived next door to this house. She often saw Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy out in the yard.

I am a native if CT & familiar with the area. I've seen her house from a distance, but not the inside. I can hardly believe this is the same house. The old one had more character & personality. It was a typical "New England" house. This is an overstated "the Hamptons" look. What a shame.

I was fond of the house as it was--in a state of relaxed, derelict, benign neglect--a beloved dump, quickly sinking into the Sound.. Hepburn didn't give a hoot about home improvement or housework and her kitchen was like an archeological dig of seventy years of hasty meal preparation. Her brother's portion of the house was spotless and tidy. These great summer camps always had a rabbit warren of tiny guest bedrooms and not-too-many baths. All of the day's activity was meant to be outside. Also, still clinging to the Victorian age in the early Twentieth Century, there was an unconscious desire for much-too-much privacy, so windows were small and interior daylight was at a premium. With what people are willing to pay for such a sizable house at such an ideal location, the interior just has to live up to contemporary expectations. Still, I might have made different choices. I think with a proper collection of appropriate antiques in the rooms and period art on the walls, the house would warm up quickly and lose that vanilla sterility. If I were to pick a location to create a monument to Hepburn, I might go for her townhouse and garden in Manhattan or her I'm-at-work house off Doheny in the Hollywood Hills.

KH was interviewed several times in the house, and it was pretty shabby by the end of her life. I'm sure you can find those interviews somewhere online. One of them shows quite a bit of the house, with KH discussing some of the decor. It was cool, because she lived there, but nobody would buy it in that condition - and with its small cramped rooms, low ceilings, etc.
@theresabollman80614 жыл бұрын
It was very different. Several interviews were taped there. It it was nice but sort of old looking and untouched. Even she was dressed in old clothes...slacks and very plain. The room she and her friend and helper cooked and ate in was simple, not updated or recently painted. She swam in those cold waters every single day...then as you see in some photos, came in and bundled up in a heavy robe etc. The Queen Anne's Lace (white flowering weeds) would be picked and used in vases in the house, and if she had to leave for the city house she would take them with her as if they were a floral arrangement. To stay warm she usually huddled by one of the hearths. As stated the brightness and windows came much later and the rooms were small and simple.

I went into the Fenwick house back in the early 80's, her sister took me there, it was completely different from the renovated home we see today....before it was almost primitive, no kitchen counters, prep tables In kit. Dark wood paneling....walk in fireplace in dining rm. Everything was very dark....full of objects she collected...her bedroom had a small canvas she was painting, paintings on all her bedroom walls...she had a good eye and her painting was well,done...she owned a 3 story brownstone in turtle Bay section of NYC.....full of fascinating treasures collected throughout her world journeys....almost felt like a lived in antique shop from a dream .....she kept a small framed photo of her older brother Tom, who died as a teen, found hung in an upstairs room...a tragic event to carry in one's heart all those years...? I was married to Katherine's sisters former husband

So true. So many commentors here seem to think it should stay at some kind of a shrine. People forget that these are all just “things,” including the house itself. Why should it stay the way these people insist. It’s not like they’ll,ever be invited. It is SO no one’s business what the new owners do.
@jeffreymartin63695 жыл бұрын
One mistake is that the the other kitchen was up stairs. I read her book "Me". She said they started out with a separate fridge for the brother, then knocked out a wall and extended the original kitchen. It was one big kitchen with separate stoves and refrigerators, sinks etc. They enjoyed each other but she had a live in assistant and as families go all spent a lot of time in the kitchen. This way they could all be in the kitchen but cooking separate meals. Her nieces and nephews came often. This house was built to replace the one her father built. It was washed away by the hurricane. Another mistake was it seems the lady said the first house was torn down after the hurricane but in truth nothing was left. She and her brother and others were home at the time. They escaped to higher ground and broke into a neighbors house. They watched the old house literally float away, it went inland and finally collapsed. They found a few things, mothers silver tea set I believe and stuff like that. A bathtub which she was photographed lying in among the debris. It is a shame the house doesn't much resemble the old one. But thankfully it wasn't torn down.
@HatTrickPublishing11 жыл бұрын
This isn't anything like the way her home looked. The first house was washed away by the hurricane. The claw bath tube was still there and many of the bricks. This is done by someone who thought this is the way it should have been. Additionally if you check the records you will find that all of the land out there belonged to her. The golf course was put in so she could play daily. She built homes for her family and assistants. Howard Hughes landed his seaplane and parked it on the beach.

The house is beautifully done, great seaview..The decor was done well, fitting well with living by the water..I didn't care for the flying geese hanging from the ceiling..But everything else was done well, I think Ms. Katharine Hepburn was have liked the outcome of her old lovely home..Beautiful view from all the windows, and great sunlight throughout the home...Speaking only for myself, living so close by the water scare me...After living through Hurricane Sandy in 2012, I could never live that close to water..But if you have the means and lots of money, people can forget what 'mother nature' can do...But I do enjoy seeing how lovely Ms.Hepburn's onced owned home looks like now.

I used to think that Hepburn's accent was rather an American version of a la-di-da English accent until I realized that her Connecticut lockjaw speech was probably closer to English as it was spoken in Shakespeare's time than the voices we're used to hearing now. Her performance as Eleanor of Aquitaine was superb. I dig it out from my DVD collection every now and then just to watch great acting.

these are Capilalist times where everything is reduced to what it's worth financially particularly property Hepburn who was one of the greatest actresses of all time loved this place dearly & I feel this altered it's meaning culturally We shouldn't be discussing the place as a pile of profit making bricks & mortar It's an extension of the Hepburn legend which is much more valuable than real estate prices & should be a museum or arts centre where we can go & get a sense of a genius talent

All that white is awful, soul-less in fact, and the destruction of the architectural embellishments is criminal. I'm just happy that Hepburn made provision to save the adjacent open space for the sake of the views. Stupidity, poor taste and too much loot are always a bad combination...
